South Philly, where there are plenty of Italian restaurants, I was so glad my husband decided on Cafe Carmela. Ann Marie took the time to explain the restaurant and her actually being from the Italian Market area. I so look forward to a return visit.
The service was absolutely amazing. Our server Mary Pat is the pinnacle of service. Bright, warm, knowledgeable, quick, and professional. She was delightful!
The food was perfect. Id heard the cheesteaks here were top contenders for best in town and that was no exaggeration. I think who has “the best” steak is debatable, but nobody will come here disappointed. Nice hearty portion, delicious seeded roll, very cheesy. My wife at half, and i stuffed myself to finish it. It was an outstanding cheesesteak, the kind that will make you think about it later. Def recommend the copper sharp.
We also got an order of arancini that were delicious and perfectly cooked, pesto flavor was great and paired well with the side of marinara. As I was looking around, all of the food and appetizers looked excellent. We are excited to go back and try other things
We didnt have pizza, but from what I could see (and I am a bit of an expert), the pizzas looked delicious and artistan, with a little char giving them a neapolitan-style look. Standard pizza oven, not brick or wood though. Pizzas looked crispy and delicious and after having many disappointing pizzas in the area, im looking forward to try one when we Come back
Thanks for having us Cafe Carmela, we will see you again some time
Cafe Carmela serves one of the best cheesesteaks in Philly, hands down. The hard-seeded Corropolese roll is perfect—crusty on the outside, soft inside—and holds everything together beautifully. The ribeye is high-quality, well seasoned, and cooked just right, and the generous amount of Cooper Sharp cheese takes it over the top. Every bite is packed with flavor and balance. If you’re serious about cheesesteaks, this is a must-stop spot.
Everything we ordered was so good. The meatballs were amazing — tender, flavorful, and clearly homemade. And the sauce!!! Soooo good!! The eggplant parmigiano was comforting in the best way, perfectly cooked and full of flavor without being heavy. And the Don Cheech cheesesteak was honestly outstanding. Packed with flavor, cooked just right, and easily one of the best cheesesteaks we’ve had in a long time.
And of course, every place must have fries and they do. Crunchy, hot, and exactly what you want alongside a great sandwich.
What really stood out, though, was how kind and helpful the staff was. Everyone was friendly, patient and made great recommendations, and made the whole experience feel easy and relaxed.
The atmosphere is cozy and laid-back, making it a great place to enjoy a casual meal, or just sit and enjoy really good food. Nothing feels overdone or pretentious — it’s simply a place that serves great food and treats people well. Oh and we live the decor and interesting signs. Feels like a throw back to a different time.
Café Carmela is definitely a spot we’ll keep coming back to. It’s the kind of place you’re happy to have in your neighborhood and excited to recommend to others. Definitely worth it. Check them out!
I ordered the Cheesestak, Cooper cheese with Onion.
It was delicious, really delicious. Better than any out there so far and I tried the most popular and non popular ones. Everything about it was just perfectly done from the bread, the seasoning, the amount of cheese and the wrapping.
The quality was great, you feel it and see it in their sandwich, survise was friendly and welcoming.
Would I come back? Yes, I will come back, and Highly recommend it.
Cafe Carmela may be a go-to for other items, but if you’re from Philly, or visiting Philly, stick to more authentic places for a cheesesteak. Larry’s, Max’s, Delassandro’s, Frank’s (in Darby), and even the papi store, if you know where to go, are some examples that would give you the authentic cheesesteak that represents Philly.
On the plus side, the dining area is cozy and inviting. The highlighted PIZZA sign on the wall is a nice touch, and the staff are incredibly kind.
