Think white people teriyaki and that’s coming from a white lady. It appears from comments and my experience that a white dude does operate the place alone so it makes sense. You just get meat with rice which I knew going in and that’s not the problem. Problem was that most of the chicken was over cooked (some pieces were passable) and the flavors were just okay. It appeared to me that a premade sauce from the store was used and it’s one of those that tastes like slightly sweet soy sauce and is very thin consistently. I could be wrong in that fact but that’s what it tastes like. He did have some Thai chili sauce available to add to it but that personally isn’t the type of spice I would add to teriyaki.
Overall it was edible but not great. It seems like the kind of teriyaki I would get in the Midwest, not in a city like Portland which is known for its teriyaki.
Service was good. He was very nice and even followed me out to give me my fork which I accidentally left behind.

Edible food. Chicken was pretty dry. Majority of the dish was rice. Sauce was great. Service was great! A touch of veggies in the bento wouldn’t hurt for $8 right?? Probably won’t return if I’m honest. Not a fan of the giant chunks of chicken. Nice location and a cool little spot. Cool guy behind the counter.

Been a long time since I stopped by but glad I did. The chicken is still barbecued on site, daily! A longtime bento spot, stop by and support a local and delicious business.

Been twice. Dry chicken, dry beef, and the appetizers could be bought from trader joe’s. The overall value is below average. Spending 10 or so dollars for a huge plate of rice and one skewer of dry meat.

Never eating here. The owner yelled at me and my dogs because they were sniffing flowers on the sidewalk outside of their gate during on my walk. Huge jerk.

Went here on a whim when no other place was open for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised! The chicken was cooked well and had good flavor, rice cooked right too.

I had shumai and gyoza too, both of which were properly cooked and had good flavor.

The price of the shumai and gyoza we’re excellent compared to other places. Will likely go again given the time.

Wanted to support a local small business so my colleague and I thought we would try West Coast Bento. I must say I was disappointed in the food and customer service. My Chicken and Beef skewers were dry, hard, and had no flavor. When I called to inform the man at the counter I wanted my money back and will not try anything else he told me I can write a review about it and that I have to eat it. I will not be recommending this business to any of my family, friends, or clients.

Twice now I’ve tried to enjoy this bento shop. The first time I walked in off the street because it smelled pretty good. I noted right away that unfortunately, this place has no tables. Since I was looking for a place to sit and enjoy my lunch I moved on.

Today I returned to give it another go. I casually shared with our main hero dude that I left last time but was excited to be back to try their bento to go. Rather than laugh, sympathize, or welcome me back, or hero chose to correct me.

The important value here was not that I returned, but that I was wrong. He haughtily educated me of the meaning of “bento” in Japanese to ensure I was aware of my mistake. I now have firm understanding that bento is supposed to be eaten while standing, or to go. Good thing I intended to get it to go this time.

With my order ready, I presented my phone to tap and go. Nope! Only cash or card. No problem, use my debit card. After several failed attempts, his POS machine (yes, both acronyms are applicable) was unable swipe or tap my card. I suggested maybe entering it manually. Nope, can’t do that either; we’re done.

As I left, our boorish hero dude had the audacity to yell across the street at me that I should carry more cash. Thanks for the life advice, champion.

I’m writing this review, comfortably seated at a table enjoying lunch at another bento place ran by a sweet Japanese lady instead of an angry white dude. I wonder if she’s judging my cultural ignorance for sitting at one of her tables while enjoying her bento. I’ll make it up to her with a separate 5-star review, because this sure is yummy.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
