I brought a friend to lunch to celebrate some new business deals and wanted to treat them to something unique. I was genuinely excited to try the Wagon Burger and was very clear when ordering that I wanted it cooked medium rare.
While our server did keep our drinks filled, he never checked in about how the food was prepared or how everything was tasting. Only quick, “how’s your first impression… at deliver”. I understand it was a busy Tuesday lunch, but the lack of follow-up mattered in this case. When the burger arrived, it was noticeably overcooked, dry, and lacked flavor—far from what I would expect from a Wagyu burger at this price point.
Had the issue been addressed earlier, I’m confident it would have been corrected, but our server was absent for an extended period and we were on a tight schedule, so there wasn’t an opportunity to remedy it. I finally mentioned it half-way through my sandwich, and flagged down the server, because it was so bad. The response was I should have mentioned it earlier. That was a miss and embarrassment in front of a business friend. I got the ticket for $78 and called it a learn. Pepsi and tea were the only drinks.
Everything else about the experience was “I guess” fine. I’m not someone who usually scrutinizes the cost of a good business lunch, but when I reviewed the receipt afterward, I found myself questioning whether the value matched the experience this time.
I hope this is viewed as constructive feedback, because I’ve enjoyed this place in the past and would like to see it live up to the standard I know it’s capable of. I’ll be back, eventually.
There are a couple of things that attracted me to this restaurant: 1 it is not on Cherry Street in Tulsa meaning, you don’t have to fight the traffic, crowds and terrible parking, there is just not much on Cherry Street that is worth it, 2 the unique menu items; quail legs and the smoked trout salad is not something you find that often in Oklahoma.
As you have seen in the pictures, they start the meal with fresh potato chips and a tangy dip. It is tasty. The quail legs were delicious as was the salad/relish that came with them. The smoked trout salad was a generous portion of smoked trout, candied pecans and creamy rich, mellow goat cheese, with greens and granny smith apple slices. It was a very nice and filling salad.
The other meal was the smoked brisket sandwich. This place is not an Oklahoma back roads county BBQ/ beer joint (I like those too by the way). It is somewhat upscale, but the brisket on the sandwich could hold its own the most of the top rated BBQ joints in Oklahoma. It was tender moist, tasty and lots of it! The slaw was a little different (not overloaded with mayo), the fries were good and the thin restaurant made pickle slices we great.
The service was very good. They checked on us frequently, as did the manager!
Let’s start with the good: the grilled chicken pesto focaccia sandwich and the sausage scramble biscuit were outstanding! Truly best-in-class for each category; flavorful, well-prepared, and memorable. Easily the best grilled chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. Period.
Now the bad, which I’m omitting from the overall star rating: we started with a Caesar salad, and it was without question the worst salad I’ve ever had. It was served warm, absolutely drenched in red onions, and tasted like nothing but onions. As someone who loves onions, that says a lot. Red onion has no business in a Caesar salad. It overpowered everything and ruined what should have been a simple, classic starter. One bite was taken and the dish had to be returned due to not being edible. Re-make was offered, we declined because entrees had arrived. (Wife picked out 10 slivers of onion prior to this picture)
To their credit, the staff was responsive and understanding when we mentioned the issue. Service overall was excellent.
Despite the salad misstep, we’ll absolutely be back soon to try more of the menu, likely for dinner next time. Just wanted to share this honest experience (along with a photo of the salad) in hopes that the kitchen reconsiders the Caesar recipe and brings it back to its traditional form.
-Overall food rating is 8/10.
-Pricing 7/10 for quality of ordered food.
Lamb was cooked perfectly and tasted phenomenal. Pudding was fresh and made with quality. Key like pie was not favorable and wouldn’t recommend. The sides with the lamb were its downfall, I would strongly recommend different sides with this meal. Pairing was interesting, but it wasn’t to par in my opinion.
Service has always been good on our business matters here. Anything that is locally owned and operated gets a thumbs up for me. Prime downtown location with good ambience. Overall strongly recommended- while this isn’t our go to, when we will return we will give this review and revisit.
