Too overwhelmed by all the great fresh seafood options? Tucked away on the bottom of the main dish menu is an Omakase…..just do it. I had an incredible Michelin star meal in Buenos Aires last night…and this is better. The owner and only waiter tonight takes serious pride in the food. Beef cheeks, braised lamb, seafood galore. Absolutely blown away.

Happy with the quality of seafood. Black hake was fresh and perfectly cooked and shrimp was fresh and pasta cooked al dente.

Everything we tried was absolutely delicious and service was friendly and attentive. Literally, no notes. The place seems family run and you should not miss it, if you are visiting the Old City in Montevideo. We ordered the cambas ajillo as an appetizer and we tried the Merluza negra y the Cordero Braseado. Soooo good. Come visit this gem!

The paella was fantastic! By far the best I’ve had outside of Spain and even better than many there, a must visit in Montevideo. The gambas al ajillo were the best shrimp as well.

Delicious food presented beautifully. We got sole (entire fish) and sea bass stew. Very much worth a visit if you are in Montevideo and like seafood.

Es Mercat is my favorite seafood restaurant in MVD–a rare gem in a carne-loving country. The moment you walk in, it feels like you’re in a friend’s dining room. The owner personally greets and serves you, the space is intimate and homey, and the menu is handwritten on chalkboards. It’s my go-to restaurant to impress visitors with the city’s culinary range. Even meat-lovers will enjoy it–their lamb is fantastic. It’s a special place–I always leave feeling well-fed and well-cared for.

Dining at Es Mercat was an absolutely delightful experience! From the moment we arrived, the entire staff welcomed us with open arms, making us feel like family. The chef was remarkable, preparing dish after dish, each more delicious than the last. From the perfectly grilled octopus to the succulent Chilean sea bass, and even the expertly crafted vegetarian options, every palate in our group was beyond satisfied.

The staff’s proficiency in English, along with their expert knowledge of local fare and wines, enhanced our dining experience, making it not just a meal but a culinary journey. The welcoming atmosphere and the personal touches provided by the chef and his team made our evening truly special.

I cannot recommend Es Mercat enough. The chef and his staff are top-notch, and the quality of the food and service is unparalleled. Please make it a point to visit them; you won’t be disappointed!
