The first Macado’s restaurant was opened in 1978 by Richard Macher in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. It soon became popular for its eclectic ambiance of cartoon, antique, and local nostalgic decor, as well as its wide array of hearty yet modestly-priced sandwiches, subs, and entrees. Popular with the college crowd, the restaurant opened additional locations near Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Roanoke College. Locations were added at the rate of one or two per year, including those in neighboring West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. I had an amazing experience with Frank at Macado’s! From the moment we arrived, he was friendly and welcoming to my family of three. He was incredibly professional and polite, making the whole meal feel effortless and enjoyable.
At one point, I downed my Coke way too fast, and Frank came over with a pitcher full of Coke, joking, “We ain’t doing this!” — we couldn’t stop laughing. That kind of personality and attentiveness is rare to find in a server.
I left him a hefty tip because he truly earned it. If I’m ever back up this way, I’m definitely coming back to Macado’s just for his service. Never had a waiter with this kind of mentality — Frank, great job

Our server was terrific! She was friendly, professional, and attentive. The sandwiches were HUGE and delicious. Macados has the best dill pickles of any restaurant I have gone to. The prices were very reasonable.

We used to frequent the various establishments on a regular basis until the one in Radford completely ruined the experience, (inaccurate orders, bad potato salad, and poor food). We decided to give it another try last Tuesday, for lunch, and everything was good except the Brooklyn Bridge was cold. We tried again this Tuesay and ordered the Wild Bill burger and the Brooklyn Bridge. The burger was great and so were the fries. However the BB was served on old bread and the meat was cold with melted cheese. The side of potato salad tasted like gravel. We are not sure what has happened over the years with the food quality and we’re not sure if we will return.

For our main course, we both ordered Reuben sandwiches—one with shredded roast beef and the other with shredded turkey. Both were excellent: hearty, well‑made, and exactly the kind of comfort food you hope for on a holiday afternoon.
What makes Macado’s truly special, though, is the atmosphere. I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, and the eclectic electric pictures, quirky knick‑knacks, and fun décor covering the walls, floors, and even the ceiling still make the place feel magical. It’s a restaurant where children and adults can both find something to smile about, and after all these years, it still amazes me.

Good service at the bar and great sandwiches. My favorite sandwich is the “little italy” always get it with a side of potato salad. Their potato salad is great. This is a regional chain with only 3 locations i think. I have only been to the location in christiansburg.

Walked in around 5pm and was immediately seated. Waitress was friendly. Received our food in a timely manner. Good thick burger. My coworker was happy with her food (Mac & cheese chicken) and it did look yummy. We enjoyed the food and the experience.

Very good meal here, our service here was outstanding! A group of 5 went in for lunch and everyone enjoyed their food. Wait staff was amazing especially towards my grand-daughter whonwas only 2. Many different choices of sandwiches, I don’t remember the name of the one I had but it had corned beef and was excellent. Would definitely stop here again when passing through!

I had the best grilled chicken ceaser salad I’ve ever had!! Service? Super friendly! The young lady who served us was a gem! Enough memorabilia to keep you occupied while your food was prepared. I didn’t even realize that I had forgotten my phone in the car, 10 outta 10 would recommend, and hope to visit again!! (I did eventually remember my phone, sans pictures )

The service was great. Our waitress was very helpful and informative. We got the boneless wings (on special for 39 cents each), so we tried 5 of each flavor to share between the 3 of us. Since this was our first time here, we were unsure of what flavor we would like, and this gave us a chance to try them all….(Our favs were bang bang, sweet baby ray’s bbq, and sweet Tai chili)
The only complaint really was that the wings were just room temp when they brought them out, and they poured the sauce on the wings…… like smothered them in the sauce….I feel like if they just kinda tossed them in the sauce to get a good coating on them, it would have made them better.
My son’s burger was huge. They are made with real beef, not the soybean burgers. He loved it but was unable to finish at the restaurant, so he took half of his burger and fries home with us.
The cup is the souvenir cup you get when ordering one of their new summer drinks that you get to keep and take home.
Overall, we had a good experience and would come back.
