Our waiter had a pretty great name. Hands off to the staff being so attentive as soon as we walked in, Agron was very polite and incredibly patient with us so he’s the only reason this review gets an extra star. We asked a couple times for extra time since the menu was so extensive. However, the food for a place that is constantly having people park across the street and walk to the diner because their parking is always so full was disappointing. We expected decent food from somewhere always packed. The French fries? Hands down great! The sandwiches barely held any meat on them, was disappointed for diner food; the soup was salty and had a strange taste, salty & sour but not super sour. It also didn’t taste like a traditional French onion, like something in the ingredients were either added or skipped, not paid attention to, or over-seasoned, idk. Chicken tenders on the big platter combo or platter plate order were definitely overcooked and dry, it was hard-crunchy like trying to chew pebbles..I gave my husband a piece of my sandwich but again, lacking meat. It was pastrami but I took it home and planned to add roast beef or another extra meat and rebuild it….I included a picture where you can see I bit and got all bread and kraut, there’s only a small thin slice of meat and one other slice and there was just a lot more sauerkraut with no balance for the meat and bread ratio. I was trying to figure out if I ordered a Sauerkraut sandwich or a proper Rueben. Disappointed we paid for salty and overcooked, lacking food. My friends turkey panini had significantly more meat, it was a solid thickness..maybe we’ll give the place another go for kitchen food like dinner meals – but my husband is more set on driving to other better diners around the area that we prefer(even if it would mean us driving a half hour or so out). It would’ve been nice and convenient since this is three minutes from us.

Ordered Burger with cheese, medium hot well done. I ordered meat loaf platter. 3 very this slices of meatloaf , thinner than a slice of bread I kid you not. Flavor was ok, the spinach was good. Our waitress got our order quick gave us our food and drinks, never saw her again? Not once in 40 minutes? Never came to see if we needed anything? Or if everything was ok? It was lunch time, but not super busy? We couldn’t even find her for our check? Had to finally go to the register and pay. The place was clean. The food was pricy for what you got. It was over $ 44.99 for a burger and meatloaf no dessert no refills on drinks cause waitress was MIA

The good! The service was very quick. The waitress wasn’t very friendly but I can live with that. The place seemed clean. The BAD, the food was VERY bad. We got the tomato and mozzarella sandwich. The tomato wasn’t even close to being ripe. The bread was a warmed up low quality roll. We also had the grilled corned beef and Swiss on rye. A staple for any diner. The corned beef was like rubber. I couldn’t chew it and it was even difficult to cut with a knife. The French onion soup was the worst we’ve ever had. Another diner staple. On top of all of this, it was expensive. They took the corned beef sandwich off the check, so we only got charged for the tomato sandwich, the soup, a water with lemon, a hot tea, and a diet coke and it was $30 (tax incl)
I get food is not cheap anywhere anymore but this seemed high to me, especially for the poor quality.

Let’s see I ordered a medium rare bacon cheeseburger. The only thing good was the fries. Then again that’s hard to ruin. The burger was overcooked. I guess it’s hard to get a medium rare burger when it’s a frozen burger. No red or pink at all and one side was charred burnt. . One small ass (meaning REALLY small) piece of cheese that wasn’t even as big as the top of the bun .
So it was take out. I went to pick it up and I thought the place closed down. Not a car in sit. Completely empty. So one would think the food would be good. . It wasn’t. ♂️. Tiny pieces of bacon. So I got there and it was already ready waiting. I got two pieces of cake…sorry slivers.
What happened to this place? Their burgers were always good and filling. Cake pieces were normal. I went to Weiss and got 2 pieces for $6. The diner charged $5 for each sliver. I know Hackettstown got bad with traffic and other elements making restaurants bad. But a diner is supposed to be good all the time. No matter where.
I guess I’m gonna have to stick to Enzo’s pasta grill. His burgers are always bigger and good. And it’s a

The food was fantastic. I ordered the Atlantis eggs Benedict and it was amazing. The team was also incredibly kind to my 15 month old, even during a bit of a crying spell, which I really appreciated.

The River Star Diner experience was OK, and here is why. This diner had plenty of seating in the front and side of the restaurant, however I was seated way in the back side where nobody was. The waitress was ok as she checked on me once after receiving my order. I ordered a pizza burger which was titled as a Parmesan Burger. The burger was ok but did lack good mozzarella cheese. The fries were good but unsalted. The location appeared clean and I did receive my meal in a timely matter. Being in the back, and not seeing much of my server, I wasn’t able to order a refill of my drink as well as wait a bit much after finishing my meal to get the bill. It didn’t feel much of the Jersey diner that I am used to.

This is a very nice diner with delicious food! I used to eat here very often back in 2017 with a special person to me, and I have fond memories eating here. This is my first time back since then. I had a lunch here today on 03/20/2022. The food was just as yummy as it was in 2017!
They have lots of tables in the front and on the side. They also have more tables in the way back end of the place and I always wanted to sit there, but missed my chance again on this trip! I will have to go back and insist on a table back there by the river!
This diner was built right on the edge of a small river which is where the name came from. It has a nice cozy aptmosphere with comfy booths and nice frosted glass accents. Employees have always been nice and friendly. Service has always been fast for me.

Total old school NJ diner… Reminded me of my childhood. They were very busy when we visited so service was a bit slow.. But very friendly. Food was good. Menu was big and had some surprises. Will go back again.

What a great spot to stop in for a lovely breakfast! Ended up this side of NJ and needed to kill some time and fill up – picked the right place. The service was excellent and everyone was kind and polite. Not to mention the food came out very quickly which I appreciate! Next time I’m around I’ll definitely pop back in and try lunch!
