When I tell you this is the best Mexican restaurant I’ve ever had… it was sooooo good the Carne Asada plate was to die for! Dont let the look of the outside fool you its not as small on the inside and the atmosphere??? So chill and everyone is so nice. We came here for our honeymoon dinner and ugh. Definitely try this place!

Good Mexican food great views. Extensive menu and great chips and salsa. It was windy, wet and cold when we visited Oct 10, 2025 but I think on a warm clear day the views of L Huron and Mackinac island would be sensational especially from the patio when open.

Food was delicious!!! My fiancé and I were greeted then sat down shortly after entering, and given the option of indoor or outdoor seating. We ate outside, it was a little windy but the view was beautiful and the atmosphere was warm and festive. Our server Sherry was very polite and did her job well. We were both very impressed with the food when it came out, my carnitas were very tender and juicy! I also got a NA blueberry mojito which was very good. Overall, Jose’s Cantina is a very great place to stop and eat, it is just a bit pricy, a bowl of queso with our chips was $10 which was a surprise to us, I would just read the prices on the menu if you are worried about spending a lot! Good experience.

I stayed down the street from this place and ended up eating it every night for dinner. The BEST EVER Mango Habanero chicken tacos. The Chicken jerk tacos were amazing as well. My husband had steak and chicken fajitas and said they were really good. I will be back if I’m ever in the area again.

Jose’s Cantina is a rare gem in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula—a place where authentic Mexican cuisine meets stunning lakefront views, warm hospitality, and a fun, vibrant atmosphere. From start to finish, our experience here was nothing short of outstanding.

Chef Roberto Gallo and his talented kitchen team are masters at blending bold, traditional Mexican flavors with local freshness. You can taste the passion and authenticity in every bite. The menu isn’t just Tex-Mex—it’s the real deal. Think house-made salsas, slow-cooked meats, rich mole, and vibrant seasonings that bring the dishes to life.

We kicked things off with a fresh margarita pitcher—hand-shaken and zesty, made with real lime juice and top-shelf tequila. It paired perfectly with a heaping plate of nachos, generously loaded with melted cheese, fresh greens, jalapeños, and a drizzle of crema. The tortillas are crisp and clearly made in-house or locally sourced.

The Seafood Burrito was outstanding—overflowing with perfectly cooked shrimp and whitefish, seasoned with a mix of smoky heat and citrus, wrapped in a soft tortilla and topped with creamy sauce and fresh herbs. The Portabella Enchiladas were a delightful surprise: rich, earthy mushrooms in a bold red enchilada sauce that tasted like it came straight out of a Mexican abuela’s kitchen.

And the showstopper? The Steak and Whitefish Fajitas, served sizzling hot, with smoky aroma and color that tells you the chef knows his way around a cast iron skillet. The marinade on the steak had depth—cumin, garlic, and chili blended perfectly—and the whitefish was flaky, fresh, and seasoned just right.

The bar menu is extensive with craft cocktails, Mexican cervezas, and a thoughtfully curated tequila selection for purists and cocktail lovers alike. The live music on the outdoor patio, combined with views of Lake Huron, creates a truly unforgettable dining experience.

The restaurant itself is immaculately clean, with polished wood, festive décor, and a family-friendly atmosphere that’s still lively and fun for groups or couples. The service was exceptional—our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and offered great recommendations with genuine enthusiasm.

Whether you’re a fan of Mexican food or just looking for a standout dining experience in St. Ignace, Jose’s Cantina delivers authenticity, quality, and hospitality in every way. Chef Gallo has truly created something special here. We can’t wait to come back!

Great spot if you’re craving Mexican food! They also have a nice outdoor seating area facing the lake—perfect for enjoying the view while you eat. The drinks are excellent too—I ordered an Old Fashioned, and it was spot on, with just the right amount of alcohol for a nice kick without being overpowering. The service was fast and friendly, and our waiter, Dan, did a fantastic job. If you’re coming with a big group, I recommend calling ahead to check if they take reservations. Even if there’s a wait, the food is absolutely worth it.

Overall 4.2. Good service. Good food. Quite busy which means one thing. Two beef tacos, 1 cheese enchilada, 3 fish taco dinner and 1/2 order of beef nachos. Nachos were tasty but not constructed very well. All the beans were at the bottom on the plate so after you eat the chips off the top you find the beans but by then it’s too late so it turned into a bean and toppings salad. Fish tacos=good but a bit bitter(maybe old fryer oil). Tacos and enchilada were good. Would eat again. See pictures. $70 tip included.
