Really great food, friendly staff, and excellent drinks makes Rare a great addition to the Schenectady foodie scene. I ordered the seafood pasta special and was very impressed. Everyone else at my table ordered various steak combinations and loved them. I snuck a few bites of their food and pretty much everything was bright and flavorful. Especially their yummy mac and cheese! They even had some old favorites from the prior restaurant Marotta’s with cute little ghost icons next to the dishes. Personally, I hope they bring back the Eggplant Pizza because that was really something special. It was called the Melanzane with roasted eggplant, portabellas, caramelized onions, roasted tomatoes, roasted garlic in oil, goat cheese and balsamic glaze.
My only criticism is that the service was a little slow for my taste. The waitress vanished after we were served, so my friend didn’t get salt until he was half done with his meal. If they can get that in order, they’ll definitely have a hit. Can’t wait to head back in a few weeks to try some more options on the menu.

The food was decent once it was actually cooked. We ordered the Mac N’ Cheese app which came out frozen. The outside was nice and crispy from the frier but the center was still at the freezer temperature.
We ordered NY Strips medium but both came out Pittsburgh rare. We sent them back so the center wasn’t purple.
The waitress was friendly and was apologetic. But no manager or any gesture of apology from any one but the waitress. Would not recommend this place at all. Very disappointed in our experience and meal. The only reason I am giving it two stars is due the salad and steak fingers were good.

Food was great! Burger was perfectly cooked. Steak tenders were really good! Staff was friendly and checked on us frequently.. I saw a recent review that commented on the decor,.. I quite liked it …modern and rustic. I did not understand that comment

Very disappointing evening. Restaurant temperature was about 85 degrees upon walking in… Overlooked this because we are in the middle of a heat wave. Hostess was very nice and provided us with menus and drinks which arrived promptly. We ordered two salads and they were delicious. I ordered a NY strip and my family ordered a steak sandwich and a burger. It took our server 20+ minutes to inform us that one of my sides and the burger were unavailable. Only a handful of people in the restaurant…. OK, so the burger was switched with another steak sandwich minus the goat cheese spread. Another 30+ minutes and the food arrives. $35+ NY strip ordered med. rare arrives med. well. Steak sandwich ordered w/o cheese spread arrives with the spread. At this point I’d had enough. 3 visits in a row with improperly cooked steaks and poor communication between staff. Im done. No more chances for this restaurant.

Great atmosphere — you’ll honestly forget you’re in Schenectady in this establishment, especially on live music nights. Food and wine are outstanding, and the service is tremendously attentive. These are definitely the elements of a successful restaurant that I look for — and Rare hits a home run.

Saw the crowd and thought mmm. Glad we went in. Our appetitizer was a little tough but tasty. My husband food came our slightly cold but they fixed that right away. My food was hot and tasty. Our waitress disappeared for awhile but it was busy. Would come again. Oh the bartender. Wow. She was great to watch. Try Rare I think you will like it. Enjoy

Terrible, took almost 2 hours to get our food, then 1 order comes out wrong, another one forgotten. The upstairs was closed, and it was packed. Poor management. Left without eating, even though they have us or drinks on the house, still a bad experience. I wouldn’t go there again on a holiday. Ordinarily, pretty fair on a regular night

The decor was all over the place. Everywhere you look there’s a different color or texture. It seemed like the design was comprised of leftover building materials.
Service was friendly but slow.
Some of the dishes were ok but others, not so much. Three in our party ordered the filet mignon. Two were over cooked and not by a little. Not a good sign for a restaurant with “steak” in the name, just putting that out there.
Do recommend the fried ice cream though, it was perfectly prepared.
Overall, though, not a place we’ll probably visit again.

I came here from Troy and apparently this is Restaurant Week. The menu had only one steak item and I came here for steak ( this is a steakhouse ). For starters we had to wait a half an hour for a table with the reservation. The appetizer was good, I wound up ordering a risotto entrée because a 6 ounce filet doesn’t quite fill a hearty appetite. The risotto was OK but what prevents me from giving this place three stars was the server had an attitude. She said “you’re not obligated to eat here”. I realize I was a little bit upset because I drove so far for a good steak, wound up having to order something different, and this was by far mediocre at best. She didn’t have to give me the attitude she gave me. To make matters worse they didn’t even have the ingredients to make my cocktail. It wasn’t worth the 45 minute drive, headache to park, or the attitude from a server. I won’t be back even if it was restaurant week and they have a better full menu, in reading the other reviews this is common for the service here.
