Once seated, though extremely busy, our wonderful server greeted us almost right away and took our drink orders as well as shared the specials with us.
We were all starved and ordered 2 apps, the fried pickle spears & the hush puppies. The fried pickles come with spicy ranch, but I preferred their plain ranch which our server happily brought upon request. Both apps were tasty and I will say, the fried pickle spears are the BEST fried pickles I have ever had, and to put this in context, I order them any time they are on the menu.
Swain’s also serves complimentary homemade chips with their homemade ranch which are also yum!
My father ordered the prime rib special, my husband the crab cakes, my mother the seafood combo platter with fried oysters & shrimp, and I ordered the bolognese.
My father & husband thoroughly enjoyed theirs with my husband commenting on how perfectly seasoned everything on his plate was. My mom Loved her fried oysters stating that they were the best fried oysters she has had in a long time. In fact, she was so enjoying them that she didn’t even get to try her shrimp before she was full. She also shared that she liked the slaw a lot. My father and I had house salads with our meals. The dressing was good, but the salads were a bit underwhelming as the cucumbers & tomatoes were half frozen and the shredded cheddar was definitely bagged and tasted a bit like plastic as kraft shredded cheese does.
My bolognese was “eh.” Granted, they are a seafood restaurant, not an Italian restaurant, so I really can’t judge them on my craving for pasta and lack of judgements in ordering a non-seafood pasta dish at a seafood restaurant. I can say that the flavors weren’t bad in the bolognese, it was more the texture of the sauce as it had full checks of sirloin steak along with several ground meats in the sauce which made for an unappealing mouth feeI just couldn’t get past.
The do offer military discounts which is nice if you happen to be a military family, like us.
Our experience was overall very pleasant thanks to the wonderful service and good food.
My husband and I came back for apps as dinner, because I was craving thr fried pickle spears, and the desserts had looked so delicious when we were there on NYE, but we were too full to try them.
Again, the fried pickles were delish. Our hush puppies this time were a bit dry, unlike the first time, so it was likely a one off. We ordered two shrimp apps, the Thai fried shrimp which were good, but a bit overcooked and the other which were basically a buffalo sauce fried shrimp, which were also a bit overdone and just not our favorite sauce. The thai shrimp did have a great flavor, which I do want to share.
As for desserts, we ordered the pistachio cheesecake stuffed chocolate cake and the coconut cake. The first had little to no flavor and the second had a really strong cream cheese frosting in between the layers of cake and the icing on the outside was way too sweet. This is why I can only give the food a 3 out of 5.
The restaurant itself is a bit small so there isn’t much special about the ambience.
As mentioned several times, you won’t find friendlier oe more attentive, on the ball service.
If you in the area, do give them a try.
Our waitress was super friendly and on the ball, always made sure we were okay. The place itself was cool too, comfy seating and a nice atmosphere. We did try the mudslide cake for a chocolate fix, but it was a bit too heavy on the liquor for us. When we mentioned this to the waitress, she took it right off our check, which was really cool of her. If you’re in the area, definitely hit up Swain’s, you won’t regret it.
I have eaten quite a few seafood pasta dishes in my life. I might’ve had one as good but I’ve never had anything any better than this dish was phenomenal. The scallops and shrimp were so fresh and they didn’t skimp on the seafood or the mushrooms. There was so much pasta after I got through eating the complementary homemade potato chips and a side salad, I could only eat about a third of the pasta. I took the rest home and demolished it for lunch the next day. This dish was so big two hungry adults could easily split it and be completely full. The complementary homemade potato chips I bring with ranch dip were absolutely delicious. Every employee I was close to spoke to me and was very polite and courteous!
All the desserts are fresh and made in the house, and my neighbor said they’re worth their weight in gold, but I do not eat sweets so I can’t vouch for this, but they do look delicious!
I can’t say enough about Customer Service. I sat at the bar on both visits and bartender was so polite, professional and very attentive!
The chicken parm was very good and HUGE, probably could’ve fed 3 people. Stuffed flounder special & fried oysters were very good also
