The food was really good. The kids enjoyed the rice and beans. The enchiladas were good, the sauces were flavorful, and the guacamole was fresh. The chile relleno was delicious.

Mayahuel is one of my wife’s and my favorite spots in Sacramento. Great food, great cocktails, great service, and an amazing atmosphere—it checks every box. You do pay a little more than other places, but it’s absolutely worth it.

We started with chips, salsa, and guacamole—all fresh, flavorful, and perfectly mild. Feeling boozy, we tried a tequila flight (blanco, reposado, and añejo). The pours are small, so unless you’re a big tequila fan, I’d stick with cocktails. The drinks here are excellent—try the Paloma, Mayahuel Fresca, or La Flor if you like a little spice.

We shared the brochetas de chorizo (great bites) and the carne con chile entrée, which I highly recommend. Warm, rich, and comforting—perfect for a cold, windy day. The asada tacos are also excellent if you want something lighter.

The ambiance is beautiful, especially in October with their Día de los Muertos display. Parking can be tight, but there’s a garage right next door. Pro tip: the IMAX theater is a 30-second walk away—perfect for a dinner-and-a-movie date.

Make a reservation if you’re going on a weekend or during lunch/dinner hours—Mayahuel fills up fast!

We had some issues at Mayahuel. But I’ll start with the good:
Menu was great, lots of options which looked quite good. And what we had did taste good.
Beer options were solid for a Mexican place
Chips & Salsa were quite nice.

OK, the bad:
Service wasn’t good. Took ~15 minutes to place our order (of any kind).
I had to go to the bar and get the drinks myself since they were sitting up there so long>
They had to scramble to find the Plant Based Menu, and then they were “possibly” out of the Lentil Soup, and asked if Carrot was OK in that case. (They were out, we got carrot, but we only found out once it arrived)
They were also out of Carnitas (Note, we went at 11AM on a Sunday, so they had just opened)
Food was not particularly hot when it came out, which I find unusual for a Mexican restuarant.
Ordered an Appetizer and was asked if I wanted it first… I did. It arrived after mains, and even then I think only because I asked about it.

I placed a reservation with a group of friends before heading over to a book signing. The ambience was very nice. The restaurant had put up Dias los Mueros decorations up which made the atmosphere so much better.

I have the steak tacos, and it was amazing. The drink I had was also good and refreshing! Definitely want to come back to try more of their foods. Especially their seafood

Overall great! Went for the $45 4-course option and it was pretty good.

I made a reservation for outside, which was an option online, but they didn’t have any outside seating that I saw and we were seated inside which is fine.

We got the non vegan course. It came with two starters each, both really good but that corn sopa de elote was phenomenal. I ordered the steak and my husband got the shrimp. Both were good. I did ask for my steak to be rare and it was medium at best. Still juicy, still flavorful. Still enjoyed every bite. I know it’s a thin piece of meat so hard to make rare. The tres leches was really good, not the best I’ve had but I’ve eaten a lot, still would order it again but need a bigger piece for sure. But I’m sure the $45 promo course has a smaller piece.

The star of the show was the drinks I ordered the passiflora and the Oaxacan old fashioned and both were out of this world good. My husband ordered the cantarito which was nostalgic for him and he liked it.

Biggest down side it was VERY loud and I mean LOUD. My spouse and I could barely talk over the noise of others and the music. Luckily we enjoy each other’s company but when we tried to talk we couldn’t.

Our waitress also spent a lot of energy in the table next to us. The table next to us, who was seated after us, was able to order multiple rounds of drinks and I couldn’t get her attention to get a second drink until we were done with our entire 4 courses. I was brought the bill right after I got my last drink.

Overall we will try to come again but we will ask to be seated at the bar so my husband and I can be closer and talk easier.

Not sure how this has an award.
When you have to ask for silverware after your food comes, then have to ask for a napkin.
Of course, when the other diners finally received their food and the fork arrived + the food was cold.
I thought I would try something different. Oops. The description was well written and fooled me into thinking it would be delicious, not so much. Looks impressive, but lackluster and bland. I sent the flour tortillas back as they had a rancid oil flavor.
The other diners ordered some pretty standard dishes (meatball soup, tacos and pozole) and said it was good.
The drinks looked good.
Overall, I was not impressed. The prices seem high for the quality.
I will not be back.

Easy walking distance from the Sheraton Grand in Sacramento. The sign outside was not lit, but we found it anyway. Decorated nicely for Christmas. Lively atmosphere. Friendly and attentive customer service.

Delicious and interesting dishes. Alot on the menu to choose from if you’ve never been here before. We had two of the Coastal Dishes: the Camarones Moctazuma al Tequila and the Salmon en Huictlacoche. I had the shrimp (Camarones) sauteed “al mojo de ajo”, with mushrooms, jalapeno chili strips, parsley, and a splash of tequila, severd with cilantro infused rice. So delicious, perfectly cooked, layers of flavor. The rice was not your average rice, so flavorful and delicious. The jalapeno strips gave just the right amount of heat. The mushrooms were fresh and cooked tenderly, the shrimp were large and juicy, and the sauce brought it all together.

Their chips and salsa were also good, which can make or break a Mexican restaurant.

The salmon was flaky and tender, cooked perfectly. It was served atop a bed of rice and sauteed veggies. “Salmon grilled and baked to perfection on a bed of Huictlacoche sauce, corn, on top of a bed of white rice.” My sister was really enjoying the dish but as she got about halfway through and got to the bottom of the dish her mouth started tingling and itching like a food allergy. There was a dark thick sauce underneath the rice. I tasted several bites of her dish, including the sauce, and did not have the same reaction. I looked up the dish to see if any of the ingredients were unusual or new to her. The Huictlacoche sauce in translation means, corn smut or Mexican truffle. It’s a fungus that grows on corn, a delicacy in Mexico. It had an earthy, smoky and slightly sweet flavor. She chose not to eat anymore, but since it was so delicious she brought it home to give to a family member to enjoy. They did not have a reaction to the sauce either.

The Cadillac Margarita’s were also delicious with a dehydrated orange slice on top adding a subtle flavor and nice appearance.

Overall a great experience and I would definitely recommend it if you are in the area. If having drinks, expect to spend $30 to $50 per person. If you come just to dine, there is ACE parking just across the way for $6 and hour, max of $30.

Best nice Mexican restaurant in Sacramento. I used to like that other Mexican one that got Michelin guide recommended but it got too popular and the food now lacks taste but Mayahuel has amazing dishes to offer! The spicy pistachio chicken mole is amazing but the adobe plate is probably my favorite! They offer flour or corn tortillas but it would be a step up if they made them on site since it’s actually super easy to make tortillas but maybe the ingredients are too expensive compared to just buying already made tortillas. The mango y chile drink is yummy I do miss it being in a taller cup looking at the reviews of others, they did get a tall cup so idk why I was jipped here. I have only been going before dinner rush lately but I do recall that dinner times the atmosphere was so good, I cannot speak for the last couple years as I have not gone that late. OMG did I mention the Mazapan ice cream and churro ice cream for dessert, 10/10!! My favorite restaurant that survived the pandemic and doesn’t need state workers to make it this far although if I have to support a company in this area I would choose Mayahuel only! I did consider 4 stars due to service since sometimes it is super loud in this restaurant that my ears hurt and I have to yell to be heard even when it is nearly empty inside in the middle of the day. Chips and salsa are extra, gone are the days of free chips and salsa, would not recommend paying for them since they are not special whatsoever and the salsa is bland if you are a true salsa lover but looking at the cliente, it makes sense. Also not all servers are great but 4/5 usually are. So for the most part they are great!

Soooo can someone explain to me why they have a 630 reservation slot if they close at 7pm? I called beforehand to confirm if that was ok, they said yes no worries. We got there at 640pm bc there was no parking nearby (first time there) that too on a Sunday & the hostess immediately saw us walk in and told us we had to order now and be done eating by 715pm bc they close lol. I was so beyond annoyed. I drove from roseville to this restaurant to celebrate my husbands birthday to be told we had to rush and eat. I asked her why they would say that and let me book at 630pm resy and allow a grace period??? It made no sense.

Ofc we left. I don’t want to celebrate my husbands birthday in a rush lol luckily casa Lola where I originally wanted to go, had walk ins available and sat us right away! It’s a better atmosphere, service, and food anyways. I will not be coming to this place again just from that experience alone. I paid to park in a parking garage too and walked 10 mins to this place lol. Casa Lola to save the day!
