The Great Plains Sauce & Dough Company is one of the best appointed and quaint restaurants in Ames, Iowa. The pizzas are good but unremarkable. The service was a little indifferent. Atmosphere was both tasteful and a little quirky. Very well done. Reasonable prices so you can’t really go wrong.

Love this place and have been eating here since they opened. The wheat crust pizza with honey is Heaven! My favorite part is the huge amount of cheese they use. It separates them from every other pizza place. The only negatives I can think of is the noise level and the awful restroom facilities. I kind of thought after 46 yrs the restrooms might have been improved. Access is a challenge but for people who have difficulty with stairs or have wheelchairs it’s impossible.

I love that this place never changes. Excellent pizza, friendly staff, and nostalgic time capsule decor.

The dough was interesting. Very chewy. Their amount of toppings do not disappoint. The bottom crust stays in your mouth long after the toppings. Maybe it was just not for me. Should have gotten the thin crust. It was tasty pizza though. I’d go back to try a different crust. Sauce was sweet and tangy. The dude behind the counter was super friendly.

Update:
We got a thin crust tonight and while the thin crust isn’t what your typical thin crust would be (thicker) it is still very good. I would definitely recommend the thin crust all meat pizza!
My husband has recently rediscovered this place. He hadn’t eaten here for many many years. This is the 2nd time he’s ordered recently. I have to say that I’m impressed with the toppings and size of a slice HOWEVER there is no in between a thin and thick crust. The thick crust is a good 2 inches if not more tall. They give you honey packets to dip it in but that is like spraying perfume on a dead rose. It doesn’t do much for a crust that is that thick, dry and hard. Dont get me wrong, the pizza itself is great and they pile on the toppings. Its good!!! But I like to be able to eat the crust and this is way too much. They need a NORMAL size crust.

The food was amazing. Had the chef salad and it’s was well worth the money for the amount of salad you get. We also got the Buffalo pizza and it was delicious, and for dessert we got the cinnamon bread and that was phenomenal. Definitely will be coming back you guys are amazing keep up with what you are doing.

Best pizza place in Iowa in my opinion. Great pizza, great service, comfy ambience and very affordable prices. Dinner for two was $18 plus leftovers! and free refills for soda too. The Denver thick crust is fantastic, and dont forget to add honey on the crust.
Pizzas are very big so make sure you get a small for two people unless you’re starving.
Overall fantastic dining experience, with a great location on main street.
Highly recommend!

The atmosphere is good… they were kind… the pizza however we got the Denver style which was very hard and chewy… inedible for us. We did prairie style and there were maybe 3 pieces of sausage on a large which for my husband was disappointing. He really likes sausage. We would go again but ask for extra sausage and try a different crust. The chefs salad was great!!!!

Great thick and crunchy crust plus totally cheesy! Loved our two topping pizza. Service was great even stopping in before an Iowa State basketball game.

We have 4 kids. Makes you really appreciate the luxury of being served at a table. Fun place of your kids are older. Order and pickup at the counter. The crust wasn’t anything over any other pizza joint we’ve tried. But the people were great and cheerful! Also, way to go with the whole dipping crust in honey!
