We were in town and this popped up as a good pizza place to try while in Santa Fe. It’s set up as an order at the counter, bring it to your table style place. The service was pretty fast and very friendly. The inside had some tables and booths, and they had cute outside seating that looked like it would be a really nice spot to hang out when the weather is nice.
While the larger pizza creations sounded really good, we decided to each go with a cheese slice and you can add toppings to it. It was great! The crust was thin but still had a good bite, and the slice was large enough to be finished after just 1. I added pepperoni, mushroom, onion, olives, and garlic to mine and it came out amazing. If ever back in the area, we will definitely be trying their signature creations!

Wow! I have had pizza from countless pizza joints in the past 22 years over my travels. Vegas, Nashville, South Beach Miami, Orlando and now Santa Fe, NM. The options in Santa Fe for pizza are plentiful and I have had 5 of them, although I won’t name them. The one I will name is Backroad Pizza! A little off the beaten path of downtown, it is well worth the small drive from anywhere in Santa Fe. It has been located @ 1807 2nd St #1, Santa Fe, NM for the entirety of its existence (parking in the rear). From the outside it just looked like a normal building that could have been anything, but step inside and enjoy the quirkiness of the layout and color scheme. The smell hits immediately! For such a small establishment, it was loaded with employees churning out pizzas in the middle of the afternoon and that told me something. I was greeted at the counter with a smile and a chalk board covered in menu items. From fresh salads to garlic knots and then all of the pizza options. There was a nice selection of locally brewed beer on tap. Margherita pizza, you got it. Green chile pizza, sold. Pizza of the moment with unique ingredients, of course. Pizzas made especially for the kids, gotta have it! Customize to your hearts desire, why not? I had the opportunity to speak with the owner, Piper Kapin, who could not have been more friendly. She informed me of her custom corn meal crusted thin crust pizza dough (her personal recipe), how all ingredients were fresh daily and sauce and salad dressings were all made in house. I was sold. She told me a little history and explained her passion for the industry, and showed me around. The property was a little bigger than I thought. There is an extra seating area on the second floor with a small balcony and what a large excellent patio for outdoor seating! (Which is dog friendly!)She (Piper) is very humble and did not even mention that she had been FEATURED on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives on Food Network….. not once, but twice! I noticed it as I was looking over her website. By this point my mouth was watering watching everyone else’s pizzas go out. I got seated with a number on a small stand and a local cold beer off tap. There was a nice buzz from the locals enjoying their meals and chatting it up. I had ordered a small half new mexican with green chile and half pesto, fresh mozzarella, pepperoni. It only took about 10 minutes despite how busy it was. First thing I noticed – THE CRISPY CORNMEAL CRUSTED DOUGH. Extra thin, great texture, super crispy, foldable without toppings falling off, it looked and smelled delicious. Upon taking my first bite of the New Mexican pizza, I understood the hype. (Where is Dave Portnoy when you need him?) In my mind this just became my go-to pizza hub. So fresh, not bready at all and the toppings and crust shined and meshed perfectly. In the 10-20 minutes I had been seated, every chair in the shop filled up; so much so that I offered my table to an older couple so they didn’t have to stand and wait…and people continued to roll in. I gathered what I had left and boxed it up to go and thanked everyone on the way out. All in all the flavor and delivery is spot on, the staff is all smiles, the atmosphere is fun and it hit on all the high notes. I definitely recommend Backroad Pizza and will continue to provide my patronage! Oh, did I mention there is a gluten free dough option? Annnnd….This place has been voted #1 favorite pizza spot every year since 2012 except for 1 maybe 2 years. Just won 2024! You just need to go see for yourself!

Good pizza and excellent cider. Husband and I had to switch our orders as they put tomato sauce on his side instead of pesto. But it worked out, as we enjoyed what we ate.

I have been coming here during my lunch break and get the lunch special to go. I haven’t had an issue on my previous visits except today. I always add additional toppings to my pizza slice and one of the toppings I always get is roasted red peppers. When I get back to my office and open the pizza box, it has tomatoes slices instead of roasted red peppers. I share the blame for not checking my order before I left but I trusted the place because I never had this problem with my previous to go orders.

Great spot for some good grub! The crispy crust pizza hit the spot after our long travel day. The crew was helpful and very courteous. There was plenty of seating outside, and the weather was good for it.

15/10 for me! We were driving through and when I tell you we smashed this entire order and slept like babies after. We had the pep- awesome. The Santa Fe- PERFECTION. The pesto rolls we got had me wanting to curl up inside the container they came in and die a happy and content pizza death. Polished it off with a homemade cookie that was plenty to share (even though I absolutely did not share it) and loved it. Got a chance to see their Friday night in action and it was a sweet perfect pizza symphony of happy people making a ton of food. Would absolutely stop in again next time we’re in the area!

Very cool place to hit up. Never been here before, and I’ve eaten all over Santa Fe. The atmosphere is chill and very cool. The menu is nicely laid out. The pizza slices are huge and plentiful. Very amazing!
I grabbed the Hawaiian style with green chile. Very delicious!
The outside area, I definitely want to do something like it at home. Between the trees and the canopies, it’s nice and cool.
Definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

You can learn a lot about a business and its people when things go wrong and that’s why I’m giving Back Road Pizza 5 stars. We ordered delivery via the thier website and then waited. We got notice that the pizza was picked up by the 3rd party delivery service they contracted with and then it took the driver a full hour and 20 minutes to deliver the food. When he handed us the pizza the box was flat out cold. I emailed the restaurant and the owner personally replied offering to make things right.
This was a good reminder to reach out to a business when something isn’t right. These are clearly good people who work hard and want to do right for their community. Next time we’re in town we’ll definitely stop in for a fresh pizza.
p.s. even though it was cold, the pizza was good. Had it been hot, it would have been a home run!
