Had a great dining experience at Hussar Grill. The food quality is well-executed, consistent, and genuinely enjoyable. Steaks are done right, sides are excellent , and portions feel fair for the price point. My son ordered Kudu (as a game steak from what they hunted)
What really elevates the experience is the team. The staff are warm, attentive, and professional without being intrusive. Pricing is reasonable for the quality and overall experience.
It has reliable quality, fair pricing, and people who clearly care about service. This place clearly earns its five stars.
Dessert was good but, one again, the serving size of the custard for the malva pudding was very min.
Our waitress was lovely and very knowledgable.
I ran in earlier to throw red rose petals on the table. It is after all NOT just another B Day.
The Lady at front door was very friendly and pointed out the table.
We frequent Stellenbosch and Durbanville branches and are very happy with high standard of serve and scrumptious meals.
Unfortunately, the ball was dropped and service was bad.
After arriving we sat quite a long while waiting for someone to acknowledge our presence. When someone DID pop up, we were asked if we want wine?
No, Hello, welcome, I’m “John”. Just a tense rushed enquiry.
David received wine for his B Day which I presented. It was opened and poured! One bottle had a cork, but no taster was poured. Once our company arrived, they poured their own wine since our waiter were not to be seen.
Since the hostess did place menus on the table, we were deep in conversation, catching up. Three times we were interrupted for an order to be taken. Every time, I responded, addressing the person by his name, because I asked: “how do I address you”, that I will call for him when we are ready.
Once the food arrived, we were checked on by our waiter, but no management present to assure of a good experience or well wishes for David. My carpetbagger was undercooked. Given the state of the situation , I did not want to further “upset” it.
Thank you for a “Happy Birthday” plate.
Unfortunately, I am in hospitality for my 29th year. So, there is an expectation. I did address the waiter, when we arrived, asking to please take care of us since it is a SPECIAL B Day.
Well, that was my Sunday lunch, with my partner of ten years, celebrating his B Day…
He said “the menu is self explanatory” but he apologizes for the aspect of miscommunication but “any restaurant will charge you extra for sauce”. He also refused to address the quality issue of the food that was served.
Low quality and overpriced.
I ordered the Kingklip. I was under the impression that it came with a sauce based on how it was described and because I selected a lemon/garlic sauce when ordering. When it came without any sauce or garnish, I asked about it, it was then explained to me that it’s made in a sauce and not separate.
I tried it as it, but the dish was completely flavorless and greasy.
So I asked what could be done about a sauce, a garlic butter sauce was then recommended to me. They brought it but it was just straight up butter, not a sauce, so I didn’t end up using it as the dish was already super oily!
After receiving the bill we noticed we were charged R30 for the garlic butter (which wasn’t used and only ordered to make the food more edible), which we didn’t appreciate on top of an already overpriced meal.
My partner enjoyed his steak at least. Waitress was lovely although still in training.
Our drinks also took about 30 mins to get to us due to the bar being busy.
It is almost 8pm. More than half the tables are empty. Apparently all fully booked. Only one table with a bench could be made available for us. On asking if we could sit on any of the other 3 tables where people just left we were sort off denied as they were not clean and we would have to go back to the entrance and wait for cleaning.
The lady seating is clearly had not much interest in accommodating us so we left and ate at Stefanie’ Place. A place highly recomendable for its brilliant service despite being quite busy.
My food tonight was awful. I ordered Lamb Shank in red wine jus. It was smothered in a sweet sauce that did not even resemble a jus (and I know what I am talking about). The shank was totally burnt at the bottom and there was a spice on it that made it inedible for a non spice eater like myself. It did not even taste like lamb. The mashed potato was lumpy. For the first time in as long as I can remember, I sent food back. My waitress was most apologetic. Nothing from the manager. I then ordered a medium steak with garlic sauce. The steak was cooked perfectly but was SMOTHERED in a sweet barbecue sauce which negated any other sauce. The garlic sauce was a glutinous jelly sauce with bottled herbs and very little garlic. My side salad was drenched in a sweet, spicy sauce that made it inedible. By this time, I just needed to eat and get out. I love Hussars as a rule, but this visit was a disaster. This branch of Hussars needs to Jack up it’s kitchen and the chef needs to get his/her (or whatever preferred pronoun) act together.
Very disappointing and I would recommend you rather go to Spur in the centre.
My server was great and very apologetic. Thank you to her.
