Stopped by for dinner and watched the UNC vs Duke game. Atmosphere and vibe was awesome, even though I went to NC State and was just there for dinner. The food was amazing as well, I got the ramen and the broth and noodles were fantastic. Their sushi was really good and dessert options were limited but delicious. The staff were also excellent and really made the whole experience super enjoyable. Overall, great dining experience and I noticed all the UNC fans there really enjoyed cheering on their team in a nice environment.

Stopped here for dinner on our daughter’s recommendation before heading home after her 1st semester in Chapel Hill. I can see why she loves coming here with her friends – generous portions, excellent food, and reasonable prices. The salmon sashimi was much better than I expected at the price point, as I usually have to pay about more for that quality.
It’s crowded, as one would expect at a college town restaurant, but not too loud or cramped.
Overall, well worth a stop if you’re in town and like sushi.

Hands down the best sushi I’ve had. Anytime I go somewhere else for sushi I compare it to Spicy 9!! Been coming here for about 10 years now and I have never had a disappointing meal. You can’t beat the BOGO deal and daily drink/beer specials. The sushi is fresh, has quality ingredients and comes out quickly. Service is always good and the restaurant is nice and clean and very spacious. I would go weekly if it weren’t about 50 mins from me 🙂

Solid lunch place. I get the BOGO rolls. My kid likes their boba a lot too. The service is always good. I do know this place gets stupid busy sometimes later in day… dinner, drinks, etc. Maybe plan ahead if you’re going at peak hours. The sushi is good, not great, but it’s Franklin Street, not Okinawa 😉

Food looked very tempting as we entered the restaurant looking for some lunch options around 3pm ish on a weekend. Lunch is till 4pm. The waitress came over quickly to take the order. She looked a lil grumpy. The Sushi is buy one get one free – both orders served in a single plate (as u can see in the pics) we ordered 2 sushi plates -flaming hot sushi & spicy tuna roll. The other order was also flaming hot and Rock n Roll spicy sushi with Tuna. We ordered the Pad Thai lunch box(chicken) which was def. bang for the buck (it comes with a salad, small regular California sushi rolls, 2 pieces of fried rolls & the pad Thai noodles. The last dish ordered was Panang curry with chicken ordered as Hot spice level with no green beans. The order was brought fairly quickly but the panang curry had a sweet taste (wasn’t to my liking at all had a very sweet taste) the dish was saucy with few basil leaves, few chic pieces and some red and green bell peppers with a small serving of sticky rice (pl see the pic). The chic pieces looked scarce in my opinion. Family liked their spicy sushi rolls and pad thai lunch box. They couldn’t finish it though as they felt it filled them up fairly fast given that they ate just abt few sushi rolls surprisingly. The lil saucer is for pouring the soy sauce for dipping your sushi roll. The food was OK in our opinion. Not one of the greatest thai foods comparatively! Also after few hours we felt like our tummies were lil upset with the afternoon lunch. Overall I would rate it a 3 as the spice level was not hot but sweet, the pad Thai taste was just tasteless (albeit looked very delicious) salad was watery and the waitress waited to see if TIP was being added which I personally thought was outright rude! Also a student discount of 10% is offered so make sure you ask because they don’t offer it readily unless you ask for it! Not super impressed with this eatery wouldn’t try it next time when I am around that area! Didn’t stand up to the taste and expectations of a good Thai restaurant unfortunately !

I usually enjoy Spicy 9, but I wanted to share a serious warning so others can be cautious. Last spring, I ordered the Tar Eel Roll and ended up getting Norovirus, which completely knocked me out for days. I can’t say for certain what happened in the kitchen, but the timing and symptoms made it very clear that it came from that meal.

I know food issues can happen anywhere, but when it comes to raw or lightly cooked seafood, freshness and handling matter a lot. My experience left me really wary of ordering eel or any high-risk items here again.

Just sharing this so others can be careful with what they choose from the menu. I hope Spicy 9 takes extra steps to monitor food safety because no one should have to go through that.

I was in Chapel Hill with the family, and we decided to try this place because my daughter had a taste for sushi. Read this review understanding that I am not a frequent sushi eater. The biggest hits that everyone loved were the Pot Stickers and the Gyoza dumplings. I had the poke bowl. I got the salmon before I knew anything with a star meant served raw. I still enjoyed the bowl, but the seaweed salad taste was a bit strong for me. I tried some of the dragon and flamingo roll. I personally like the dragon roll flavor better. One tip is to watch where you sit. Condensation from the vents can fall from the ceiling at table 35. There is a high chance we will be back, especially if we feel in the mood to try a little something new.

spicy 9 has somehow messed up my order or given me bad food almost everytime. the only reason i come back is the location and the fact that my friends like the prices. also THIS IS NOT LO MEIN. even the crappiest asian restaurant would make lo mein better than this. extremely disappointed.

I’ve eaten 3x @ Spicy 9… pleasant and courteous staff…. dishes I tried included sushi/sashimi, orange chicken, calamari, and General Tso’s chicken… sushi/sashimi was excellent and very fresh… orange chicken and general tso’s chicken both very good, and not drenched in too much sauce as many other places do; I liked the orange chicken a little more… the real pleasant surprise was the calamari – prepared with a crispier coating then I was used to, but now my 2nd best calamari from samples all over the world… highly recommend for Japanese, Thai, and Chinese cuisine

I have drove past here 900 times and thought I should try it one day. We’ll I finally did and sad I didn’t sooner. Nice atmosphere, food is a bit different in coloring than some other places but don’t let that fool you! I got the chicken lo mein and it was quite delicious! My son enjoyed his sushi and my mom loved her hibachi steak. Parking downtown isn’t exactly a picnic but I would definitely go back.
