The weather was absolutely beautiful today, so my husband and I decided to go out to find a place to eat. Burlingame really has so many restaurants with great ambiance—they all feel very romantic. We passed by this place and thought it looked promising. Since it was lunchtime, it wasn’t too crowded. We tried the seafood pasta and the classic tomato and cheese pasta, along with a portion of fried squid. Since it was just lunch, we didn’t order too much.
First, the batter on the fried squid was just mediocre—it turned soft not long after being served. With the first bite, it felt like I was mostly tasting the flour coating. It was average, so I wouldn’t really recommend it.
Next, my seafood pasta was highly recommended—the flavor was fantastic. However, the scallops had a bit of sand in them, though I’m not sure if it came from the mussels or the scallops themselves. Still, the taste was great.
My husband tried the classic tomato pasta, which had an overwhelmingly rich cheese flavor. By the end, he couldn’t finish it. It’s probably better suited for those who really love cheese.
The service was nothing special, just average. What was uncomfortable was that the bill automatically included a 3% fee, which didn’t feel great. We still left a 20% tip, but it felt like we were charged some extra fees unnecessarily. I hope the restaurant can improve on this—if the service is good, customers won’t be stingy with tipping.

Il Fornaio, located right in the middle of Burlingame Downtown, was an upscale Italian restaurant. It had both bar, formal dining and private party areas It served quality Italian dishes including appetizers, pastas, pizzas, interesting mains and good wines. Its complimentary breads served with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar was so good. Its deep fried breaded small squids and deep fried breaded sole were great as well. It served truly authentic Italian dishes.

An invitation for dinner celebrating their 40 year wedding anniversary was a very good excuse to have dinner at this place. The bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar was a starter with the fried calamari plate… I had the house salad with the seabass fish and it was delicious and perfect

I have been here a few with my company meeting and coworkers. It’s always good to be here.
Yesterday, I took my mom here and it got so busy somehow that my waiter didn’t come by much except for bring the drink and food out and the bill. The eating for the food is long and one of the dish sold out which made it even longer to wait.
Overall, it the food is great. I felt they forgot us a bit.

Excellent food in a nice atmosphere with attentive waiters. The wine was amazing. I had the ravioli with butternut squash and walnuts. It was great! My son and his girlfriend each had gourmet pizzas and my wife had a pasta with Bolognese sauce. All the food was excellent. Definitely recommend.

Atmosphere & Service:
The restaurant is beautiful both inside and out. The ambiance for dinner was the traditional setting with dim lights, nice table settings and an open view of the kitchen. The staff were polite and very accommodating for our party of 8
Food:
Came into town for a wedding and this is where the Bride decided to have dinner. I was super excited to eat some Italian food. As you can tell by the pictures the food looked amazing, however it was very disappointing. None of the food had flavor. Because we were a big group we ordered a variety of items and we ended up having to put salt and pepper on everything. The olive oil for the bread tasted like fake oil out a plastic bottle. The calamari was cooked perfectly but had no flavor and the sauce didn’t help either. Two orders of the braised short rib ravioli had to be remade because it came out cold and once to the table was also bland. The salmon was slightly dry and the beef in the lasagna was overwhelming.
Not sure what happened here, but there is definitely room for improvement. My score is based on the food alone.

The kitchen made a mistake with the order and brought the wrong pasta. Not a big deal for me, but the staff and manager went all out to provide an outmost outstanding unbelievable service. This is by far the best customer service I ever received in a restaurant in my life. This is why, this venue still in business after 30 years. The food is delicious, the ambiance is delightful and the service out of this world. My favorite dish is the lasagna béchamel. The pasta with bolognese meat sauce is also delicious. And the volcano chocolate cake to die for.
