The soft shell was soooo big and plump and cooked just right! The stuffed artichoke soup was delicious. The broiled redfish pontchartrain had crabmeat on top. My redfish was slightly fishy, others did not have fishy fish. Order the large onion ring…. Holy moly they were amazing! Now let’s talk about the baked macaroni and cheese…. I am very particular with this dish and it was SOOOO good, sounds crazy but true. Be careful for parties of 6 there is an 18% included tip and THEN ANOTHER suggested tip of 18% at the bottom…. That is sneaky! But our server. Chelsea was great and very entertaining…. Even though she”didn’t work here!” lol

It is so great to have this classic restaurant in the neighborhood! I recommend this to anyone. Very high quality food, served with a family business touch.
The lunch specials are especially wonderful. This is where I go when I’m ready for some good catfish!

Nice traditional spot in the Bywater. We visited thanksgiving eve and was surprised to find soft shell crab on the menu. Service was good and friendly, despite being the eve of thanksgiving. I’m sure many were eager to start their holiday and appreciated the hospitality.

Going to Jack Dempsey’s reminds me of eating at my grandma’s house. Everyone is talking to friends, hugging people they haven’t seen in a while, and you get good comforting hot food. That true southern hospitality. My server was friendly and on top of things. The vibe was great, the food was even better, and the drinks were good and strong. I look forward to my next visit.

The food, the service, everything was awesome. Except the parking. That is a little tight. But, the food, oh my goodness, it was sooooo good and the servings were more than enough. You will definitely have leftovers. Can’t wait to go back

This restaurant was cute and made me feel like I was going to my granny house to eat dinner. The waiter was nice and attentive, and the food was fresh.

This is a local venue which is not fancy one bit but has super quality food and real character. Don’t miss this spot! We found Extremely good value for the price with a large menu. The raw oysters were top notch with horse radish and other accouterments. The gumbo very traditional. Oyster salad was great and so was the stuffed flounder. Yum.

Today was my first time at Jack Dempsey’s Restaurant. I have intended to go for years but always find myself in the area on Monday, when they are closed. For years I have heard about their steaks, fried Seafood and mac and cheese. I was not disappointed. The food was great and the service was as well. A great local owner family restaurant and a real treat to have a meal here.

If you’re looking for a restaurant where the seafood is fried to golden perfection and the conversations take wild turns you never saw coming, Jack Dempsey’s is your place.
The menu is basically an edible encyclopedia of fried happiness. The onion rings? Monumental. Architectural. If the Romans had discovered deep frying, the Colosseum would look like one of these rings. The fried soft-shell crab was so good I briefly considered standing up and giving it a round of applause.
And the beers—served in goblets so cold they could chill a volcano. I’m pretty sure the glass was frosty enough to qualify as a small glacier.
But the true highlight was our server, who was funny, warm, unbelievably engaging, and—apparently—willing to share family stories that we’re still processing. At some point between refilling drinks and delivering platters of seafood glory, she explained why she calls her brother a “pooh-eater.” Something about her being born by Cesarean. We’re still not sure how those two facts are connected, but honestly, we respect her confidence and commitment to the bit.
Bottom line: Jack Dempsey’s is delicious, hilarious, and unforgettable. Come for the seafood, stay for the ice-cold beer—and leave with stories you definitely didn’t expect to hear.
