Five bright, shining stars all around! We were flying in from Kauai and our flight was delayed TWICE, and it was our last night on Oahu, so we were so grateful that the receptionists were flexible in pushing our dinner reservation back. Upon entering, there is a huge display of Japanese whiskeys. We were promptly seated, and I ordered the $85 Teppan and my BF ordered the $125 steak & lobster. Both meals include panko shrimp, veggies, and salmon. To our surprise, a tasting plate of thin roast beef slices and cheese was brought along with salads. Our entire meal was so flavorful that I did not add any shoyu or dip into the roasted garlic sauce. Also, the garlic fried rice with bits of egg and bacon was tasty all on its own. We both selected the 5 oz. Washu filets, and we were beyond satisfied. The grill master never once rushed us even though we were the last patrons of the night. The restaurant is divided into two elegant rooms: teppanyaki and sushi/sashimi.

I loved the vibe of the restaurant. Minimalist and classy.

Overall, the meal was delicious! I had the chef’s recommended course and could really taste the quality in the fish. Cocktails were amazing too. They have a wide selection of Japanese whiskey.

The only thing off was, I ordered a freshly squeezed juice and was given a juicer to squeeze it myself. For $12, that was not worth it.

New year celebration in a private room of the restaurant if the room is available and the food cost is minimum $500. Very good service by the waitress. We chose the set menu as it has pretty much items that we would like to try. It turned out we made a good choice with delicious dishes. As it was a birthday of one member, the restaurant did surprise us with a candle dessert and a small bouquet.

Restaurant Suntory is such a special place. It doesn’t just feel like a restaurant in a mall; it feels like a genuine portal to Tokyo right in the heart of Waikiki.

Since their 2021 renovation, they’ve really leaned into that sense of “escape.” The aged wooden panels, meant to evoke Suntory’s whisky barrels, and the quiet, minimalist design that’s does a great job of blocking out the bustle of Kalākaua Avenue.

If you are planning to share this gem with friends soon, here are a few ways to make the most of that “authentic Japan” mission:
The Three Experiences
The beauty of Suntory is that it’s actually three distinct restaurants in one, depending on the vibe your friends are looking for:
• Sushi Tokiwa: For the ultimate “closer to Japan” feeling, this is their intimate, 9-seat omakase counter. It’s very traditional and secluded. Reserve early!
• The Teppanyaki Room: Great for a group. It’s more social but maintains that high-level omotenashi that Suntory is known for.
• The Washoku Room: Perfect for a quiet lunch or dinner. Their Shunsaizen changes monthly and is one of the most authentic kaiseki-style values in Honolulu.

Pro-Tips for your Next Visit
• Whisky Flights: Since you’re at a Suntory-owned establishment, take advantage of the rare pours. It’s one of the best places to find Yamazaki, Hibiki, and Hakushu.
• The Oxtail Kamameshi: If you’re dining in the Washoku room, this iron-pot rice dish is a fan favorite that perfectly blends Japanese technique with local ingredients.
• Validation: If you’re driving, don’t forget they validate for the Royal Hawaiian Center.

We had a great night! We loved our meal – the strip steak I think -which was $60 roughly. It came with rice, miso soup and breaded prawns cooked on the grill… drinks were fairly priced…we were the only westerners there. I think more westerners need to see the prices and not get caught up in the $240 wagyu menu… this was the teppanyaki room where they cook in front of you. Delicious and cheaper than a steak at some restaurants

Our first time at Restaurant Suntory was amazing! The food was absolutely delicious, especially the steak (and this is coming from someone who’s not a big red meat eater). My boyfriend and I were celebrating our one year and were gifted a cute cake and ice cream and I got a bouquet with real flowers! If you’re looking for your next date spot, Restaurant Suntory is the place to go.

Came here to celebrate dad’s birthday. Ordered 3 sets for four people. There’s more than enough food for sure. I wish they’d told me the sets were for 1-2 people before I placed the order. But otherwise, fresh seafood, yummy rice (by the way, the served the oxtail rice, different from the picture on the menu), crispy tempura.

People often judge a luxury restaurant by its food, ambience, and presentation. But true luxury comes from the hospitality — the attention to detail, the warmth, and the genuine connection between staff and guests.

Our experience here left us in awe, deeply appreciative, and truly happy — all because of Peggy, our Korean mom–ajumma for the night. She was warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable about every course, every ingredient, and how each dish was prepared.

We were very particular about what we could and could not eat, and Peggy was extraordinarily responsive. She double-checked ingredients, guided us through the menu, and made sure everything was safe for us. Her attentiveness, kindness, and professionalism struck the perfect balance: present and caring without ever interrupting the dining experience.

And of course — the food was outstanding.
I highly recommend the Black Cod; it’s one of their signature dishes and absolutely a must-try.

Because of Peggy, this restaurant became one of our best dining experiences — not just in Hawai‘i, but honestly worldwide. The food is creative and beautifully presented, the ambience is lovely, but the true heart of this place is the warmth, knowledge, and exceptional hospitality she provides.

5 stars, without hesitation. Thank you for an unforgettable evening.

I’ve been coming to HNL all of my adult life, and have been coming to Suntory the last 10
years. It is literally the highlight of my trip every single time. My lady jokes I only come to eat at Suntory…

This last time I was blessed to have had the opportunity to meet Logan, the newest teppanyaki chef. He gave me a dining experience that was nothing less than perfect. If you get to go to Suntory, great, but if you get to have Logan cook for you, even better! Don’t hesitate to request him as they normally adhere to special requests.

Suntory, keep taking good care of your staff as it shows in the food and the experience. It will always be my first stop when I get to the islands!!!

Many blessings
CM

PS- extra panko shrimp!!

Benny and Makabe-san really made our omakase experience unforgettable and set the tone for our first day in Honolulu! Every course was like a sweet and savory kiss to your taste buds and as authentic as Japanese sushi can get in the states (when they use shiso leaves in their sushi, you know you’re in the right place). Makabe-san is seriously a master at his craft and Benny’s top notch service and kindness were unmatched. If you’re looking for a great omakase experience and very fresh and delicious sushi, definitely check out Suntory!
