Overall, the meal was delicious! I had the chef’s recommended course and could really taste the quality in the fish. Cocktails were amazing too. They have a wide selection of Japanese whiskey.
The only thing off was, I ordered a freshly squeezed juice and was given a juicer to squeeze it myself. For $12, that was not worth it.
Since their 2021 renovation, they’ve really leaned into that sense of “escape.” The aged wooden panels, meant to evoke Suntory’s whisky barrels, and the quiet, minimalist design that’s does a great job of blocking out the bustle of Kalākaua Avenue.
If you are planning to share this gem with friends soon, here are a few ways to make the most of that “authentic Japan” mission:
The Three Experiences
The beauty of Suntory is that it’s actually three distinct restaurants in one, depending on the vibe your friends are looking for:
• Sushi Tokiwa: For the ultimate “closer to Japan” feeling, this is their intimate, 9-seat omakase counter. It’s very traditional and secluded. Reserve early!
• The Teppanyaki Room: Great for a group. It’s more social but maintains that high-level omotenashi that Suntory is known for.
• The Washoku Room: Perfect for a quiet lunch or dinner. Their Shunsaizen changes monthly and is one of the most authentic kaiseki-style values in Honolulu.
Pro-Tips for your Next Visit
• Whisky Flights: Since you’re at a Suntory-owned establishment, take advantage of the rare pours. It’s one of the best places to find Yamazaki, Hibiki, and Hakushu.
• The Oxtail Kamameshi: If you’re dining in the Washoku room, this iron-pot rice dish is a fan favorite that perfectly blends Japanese technique with local ingredients.
• Validation: If you’re driving, don’t forget they validate for the Royal Hawaiian Center.
Our experience here left us in awe, deeply appreciative, and truly happy — all because of Peggy, our Korean mom–ajumma for the night. She was warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable about every course, every ingredient, and how each dish was prepared.
We were very particular about what we could and could not eat, and Peggy was extraordinarily responsive. She double-checked ingredients, guided us through the menu, and made sure everything was safe for us. Her attentiveness, kindness, and professionalism struck the perfect balance: present and caring without ever interrupting the dining experience.
And of course — the food was outstanding.
I highly recommend the Black Cod; it’s one of their signature dishes and absolutely a must-try.
Because of Peggy, this restaurant became one of our best dining experiences — not just in Hawai‘i, but honestly worldwide. The food is creative and beautifully presented, the ambience is lovely, but the true heart of this place is the warmth, knowledge, and exceptional hospitality she provides.
5 stars, without hesitation. Thank you for an unforgettable evening.
years. It is literally the highlight of my trip every single time. My lady jokes I only come to eat at Suntory…
This last time I was blessed to have had the opportunity to meet Logan, the newest teppanyaki chef. He gave me a dining experience that was nothing less than perfect. If you get to go to Suntory, great, but if you get to have Logan cook for you, even better! Don’t hesitate to request him as they normally adhere to special requests.
Suntory, keep taking good care of your staff as it shows in the food and the experience. It will always be my first stop when I get to the islands!!!
Many blessings

PS- extra panko shrimp!!
