⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ **Family CNY Lunch done right. Old-school Teochew excellence!**
For this year’s Chinese New Year reunion lunch, my family decided to skip the usual hotel buffet and go back to our roots with a proper Teochew restaurant feast. Best decision we made. Chin Lee absolutely delivered, and it reminded me why this place is an institution in the east.
We booked a table for a **CNY lunch gathering** with the whole extended family—uncles, aunties, cousins, the works. The atmosphere was buzzing, exactly what you want for a festive meal: noisy, happy, and full of families catching up over really good food. No stuffy restaurant vibes here, just pure Singaporean warmth.
**The Feast:**
Since it was CNY, we had to order the classics, and Chin Lee did not disappoint.
1. **The Yu Sheng Platter:** We kicked things off with a bang. The portion was massive, and the ingredients were super fresh. The waitresses were cheerful and said all the right *lo hei* phrases as we tossed, which really set the festive mood.
2. **Braised Duck (Kiam Chye Ark):** This is their signature for a reason. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender, and the gravy was packed with that savoury-sour punch from the salted vegetables. The uncles at the table couldn’t stop raving about it. We had to order extra rice just to soak up all that sauce.
3. **Steamed Promfret (Teochew Style):** A Teochew restaurant must-order. The fish was perfectly fresh, and the sour plum and tomato broth was light yet packed with umami. It balanced out all the heavier dishes perfectly.
4. **Or Nee (Yam Paste):** For dessert, we had to have the Or Nee. It was smooth, rich, and not too sweet, with a generous dollop of ginkgo nuts. The perfect sweet ending to a heavy lunch.
**Why it worked for CNY:**
The service was efficient and friendly despite the crowd, which is a huge plus during the festive period. They handle the chaos of large groups really well—the food came out at a good pace, and they didn’t rush us out even though we were there for a good two hours chatting and catching up.
**Verdict:**
If you’re looking for a place that serves authentic, comforting Teochew food without any pretence, and you want to gather the whole clan for a meaningful meal, Chin Lee is the spot. It’s not fancy, it’s not cheap (but very reasonably priced for the quality and portion), and it’s always satisfying. We left with full bellies, full hearts, and already planning our next family dinner here.
**Foodie Tips:**
* **Book early for CNY lunch/dinner!** They get snapped up fast.
* Go in a big group so you can order more dishes to share.
* Don’t skip the braised duck. Seriously.
Ordered coffee ribs, salted vege soup & prawns asparagus.
All were delicious – prawn asparagus and yam paste ( with/ without pumpkin) is standard.
Recommendation:
Order the one with pumpkins as it balances out the sweetness.
Very efficient waiters to clear your plates.
Today, we had a number of dishes which totalled to a bill of $370+. We didn’t wait long for food. However, compared to previous meals, today’s food standard was not there.
The fish was not that fresh and not served hot. The fish maw soup was ordinary (compared to previous brilliance!). A few dishes were salty and monotonous in taste. We ate quite a number of dishes and none memorable.
The restaurant was fully booked, and the tables outside are filled too. They have good business! Thankful the server was still quite prompt.
My favourites are:
– Teochew style steamed pomfret (the stock is heavenly)
– Hae Zhor/Handmade Teochew prawn ball
– Coffee pork ribs (tender and so flavourful)
– Orh-nee/Yam paste (really good texture and depth of flavour, best one I’ve ever tasted)
– The braised peanuts that are served as a side snack!
Service is brisk and attentive. I’ve had several family celebrations here and it’s a place I’m happy to bring friends to.
Plus point: Toilets are clean and well maintained
