Over the years, I have experienced ongoing inconsistencies in how this drink is priced and rung up, varying widely by location and even by barista. While this was frustrating, I accepted it because I genuinely enjoyed the drink.
When Starbucks changed its matcha to no longer include sweetener, I initially thought my Starbucks routine was coming to an end. That concern was compounded when I began being charged for a “Venti Custom Tea” ($5+) plus an additional $1 per scoop of matcha—resulting in a total cost of $10 or more for water and matcha powder. This pricing is difficult to understand, especially when more complex espresso-based drinks with multiple customizations cost significantly less.
At one point, a knowledgeable and kind barista suggested ordering a Venti Matcha Latte and substituting water for milk, as this automatically included four scoops of matcha and classic syrup at a reasonable price point. I eventually came to enjoy the drink this way, though the taste still varied from visit to visit depending on who prepared it. Nevertheless, I continued ordering it as part of my afternoon routine.
Today, however, I experienced a situation that was both frustrating and unacceptable. At one local Starbucks, the Gregory St location in Pensacola, FL, I ordered my usual Venti Matcha Latte with water instead of milk. I was told this was no longer possible and that it must be rung up as a Venti Custom Tea. When I explained that this would result in a $10+ charge, I was told, “That’s the way it is.” I calmly responded that I would go to another Starbucks instead.
As I drove past the window, the barista stuck her tongue out at me and flipped me off.
This behavior was shocking, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable.
I am struggling to understand how it makes sense—either logically or from a customer experience standpoint—that water and matcha cost more than milk and matcha. After years of navigating inconsistent pricing, unclear policies, and now openly disrespectful behavior, I find it very difficult to justify continuing to support Starbucks.
I am sharing this feedback not only due to the pricing issue, but also because of the lack of consistency across locations and the serious customer service concern I experienced today. I hope Starbucks will review both its pricing policies for nonstandard but simple drinks and its expectations for in-store professionalism.”
Review that I am not only leaving here but have also sent to Starbucks corporate.
Shortly afterward, an employee approached me and stated that I could not sit in the store unless I made a purchase and then escorted me out.
The way this situation was handled was unprofessional and unwelcoming. The interaction felt targeted.
