Awesome food and they always have a seasonal menu. You order at the counter then seat yourself and they bring your food to you then you bus your plates at the end. Everyone is always nice and the food is delish no matter what you get. Love their lavender lemonade and outdoor seating in the summer

You can sit and eat or there are lots of grab and go options. A few items on the regular menu are labeled vegan. Lots of baked good items but only one vegan option. We had the carrot cake and it was delicious

Hello,

Today my boyfriend and I visited Avalon Café, where we have been loyal customers for over three years, often visiting multiple times per week. Until today, we have never made a complaint.

I ordered a Neapolitan cold brew (over $7), which arrived tasting extremely watered down with a chalky aftertaste and was missing the cold foam and strawberry flakes. When I politely asked the barista how it was made and explained that it tasted like water, my concern was dismissed and attributed to ice, despite the drink having been made only minutes earlier. To avoid further back-and-forth, I requested a refund rather than a remake. The refund was processed, and I then ordered a cappuccino, which was made correctly and was fine.

After returning to our table, my boyfriend noticed that his oat latte (over $7) also tasted very bland and watered down. We tried to fix it ourselves to avoid bothering staff, but it remained undrinkable. I went back to the counter and politely asked if he could receive a replacement drink (not a refund).

At that point, the manager (wearing a red shirt) immediately refused, stating, “No, I’m not giving you nothing,” and said she had already been “informed” about me by staff. She stated, “I see everything and hear everything,” and referenced me asking for cinnamon with my cappuccino, which is typically included. When I mentioned that the cinnamon had been thrown at me, she acknowledged seeing it but dismissed it as something she would address later.

The manager did not ask what the issue was with the oat latte, did not attempt to de-escalate, and refused any refund, exchange, or even the price difference when a cheaper drink was suggested. I explained that we had paid approximately $15 for two drinks we were unhappy with, after years of consistent patronage and no prior complaints. She responded by insisting the drinks were fine and stating, “My girl has been making coffees all day, no has complained but you.”

Eventually, she agreed to make a cappuccino instead, but refused to return the nearly $2 price difference between the oat latte and the smaller cappuccino, stating she would not give “any money back.” When I suggested making it a larger size instead, the manager in red shirt says yes but you get no money !!

Throughout the interaction, I remained calm and respectful. I was accused of how I “spoke to staff,” despite simply being clear about what I ordered and what I expected for the money spent. What could have been resolved quickly with a simple replacement escalated unnecessarily due to the manager’s confrontational and dismissive approach.

This experience was extremely disappointing, particularly given our long-standing loyalty to Avalon Café. Unfortunately, we will be limiting our visits moving forward. It’s very unfortunate that this situation was not handled with professionalism or basic customer care.

Sincerely,
Me in the green coat !!!

Good grub, great service, wide range of drink options; no putting your name in to wait a long time for a table, instead you get in line to order and pay as well for your drinks and food, and one from the team will bring your food to you at your table.

Spent an hour or so here before a red wings game. We warmed up first with hot tea and delish vegan bakery items. We hung out a little more and decided we wanted a hot meal too. The avocado toast was quite interesting but tasty. The piece of sourdough they used was HUGE I needed to use a knife and a fork to cut it. The spices and cucumber on the top were tasty. A lot of cute little items here and there were sturdy mugs for sale as well. I wish there had been more vegan options but it was nice for sure.

This place was solid. It was well worth the walk from my hotel. I had the avocado toast with wild mushrooms and it was delicious. The bread was thick and fresh and the avocado and mushrooms were perfect. If you are in Detroit looking for a nice breakfast in a fast/casual type place I wouldn’t look any further.

I went in there because it’s advertised as a cafe and bakery. `It’s really more of a cafe with some baked goods. I ordered two blueberry muffins to go, and it came to $8. I honestly didn’t even look in the bag until I got back to my hotel. You can see the size of their $4 muffin, and in the other picture you can see that it looks blue(?) on the inside. That is the extent of the ‘blueberry’ in their blueberry muffin. It really had no flavor to speak of, and certainly nothing remotely related to blueberries. I can’t say anything about the cafe aspect, but I don’t hold out much hope.

Very delicious oat meal and coffee. Service was a bit slow but very friendly. Adding this to my list of breakfast spots in Detroit.

After a walk along the riverwalk, I wanted something to tide me over for the rest of the afternoon. I saw Avalon was popping off and looked like a pretty trendy place.

I decided to order the sausage, egg, and cheese muffin. It was pretty tasty and was a nice light meal.

My only real complaint is that the service seems a bit slow for a breakfast place.
