I wanted to like this place based on the reviews but I left dinner service with an immense feeling of regret and disappointment. Disappointed that the service for such an upscale place was so poor. Regretful that I should have gone to a different location where I would have received better service and more food for a lot less money.
It started off great. The gentleman at the front of the house kindly greeted us and promptly got us seated. The waiter (I think Charles was the name.) came by, introduced himself, and took our drink order.
A few minutes later he came back, took our order (We ordered two of the Signature Taste of JOA.), turned on the grill and disappeared. Then we started noticing a faint smell of gas/propane, and after looking around, we figured out it was definitely coming from the grill at our table. We informed the front of the house and were promptly reseated. It was at this moment that our original waiter, Charles, seemingly abandoned us entirely. It went downhill after that.
We were constantly overlooked by our waiter. The side dishes were slow to arrive. The meat took even longer. Our waiter would disappear for a while and we’d be left with empty side dishes or with no rice and when we did ask for more that took a while to come out. It was a lot of waiting in angst for the waiter to come by so we can get decent service. We never received our soup until the very end and had to get it to-go.
We never did see Charles again towards the end of the service. I think he handed us off to another waiter. While I normally tip 15% to 25%, the service was so bad that I decided not to tip.
The food was great but overshadowed by the poor service that we received, especially for such an upscale location. The service just doesn’t match the quality of the food. Another gentleman who was helping clear the tables asked if the service was a lot better than when it started and I told him it just went from bad to worse. He then gave us a coupon for the terrible service. While I appreciate the gesture, that coupon will remain unused—I simply don’t plan to return.
Best part? Happy Hour deals are unreal — half price on all drinks until 630 daily. Great vibe, great value, great night.
The host was an absolute pleasure. Great dining service, delicious food, fresh quality ingredients, authentic banchan. All the staff I interacted with were knowledgeable on the menu as well as the restaurant history and its owners. And I’m the type of person who loves to know the whole story of a restaurant, not just be sold on high ticket menu items and drinks…
Will definitely be back when I am in town again.
Lately, I’ve felt that many Korean BBQ places in the U.S. have adjusted too much to American tastes, making the food overly sweet and salty.
But JOA was different. The meat was fresh, and the side dishes were especially delicious.
What stood out the most was the service—they grilled the meat for us perfectly, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
