The White Mana, located at 470 Tonnele Ave., Jersey City is a historical landmark, as well as the first Manna (THE ORIGINAL!) to open, and was the 1939 World’s Fair building. When originally introduced, it was called the diner of the future and an Introduction to Fast Food. According to the present owner, Mario Costa, Jr., the difference in spelling was the result of an error when the sign was serviced.
Enduring spot slinging burgers & other diner fare in a building dating back to NY World’s Fair.

The inside was pretty rad, if you’re into nostalgic places, which I am, then I highly recommend it. Looks like they haven’t change a thing in the interior on 50 years. In a cool way.
The staff was nice enough and took less than 5 minutes to get my food. On the major plus side it was priced well. It was $10 with tax for 3 cheeseburger sliders with a drink and fries. Then amount of fries was generous, too.
However, the burgers left something to be desired. The fries and burgers reminded me of McDonald’s sadly. A completely forgettable meal taste wise, which was frustrating after seeing so many good things about it, especially from the late Anthony Bourdain.
I would go again to see if perhaps it was just a bad day for them or something and give them another shot but this meal was more of a 6/10.
There are simply many other burger options that are better. Here’s hoping I have a better experience next time I visit.
I wanted to like it.
Staff great, atmosphere great, cleanliness great, price point good, quality good.
Arriving at our destination, we re heated the food.
First thing we noticed the burgers were smooshed flat as a board, Is this a “thing”? They werent quite perfectly flat, maybe next time we can take them out in the parking lot and run them over a few times to see if we can get them flatter?
The beef way too overcooked, hard as gravel, bland flavorless, i did see onions added? Could not taste them. The rolls flavorless.
Was never offered pickles.
The fries were raw, and squishy. I was told by my co-worker, the chicken sandwiches were “disposed” of.
The most dissapointing aspect of our meal?? Dumping the bag of take out on my counter….
Chinese Food Hot Sauce packets. Come on now? Really?? Not even a cayenne or red pepper flake hot sauce? Were these chinese hot sauce packets left over from some employees lunch? Have i been re-sauced??
(Sigh…… smh) Would i try again? Sure.
Eat-in only, requesting extra crispy fries. Real hot sauce, and not flat hamburgers.
The 11pm closing time is convenient, lots of parking and easy access. The location, atmosphere and people make it fun
The french fries are crispy and golden, a great side to accompany the burgers, and the milkshakes are thick and creamy, providing a nostalgic treat. The menu offers classic diner options like breakfast plates, club sandwiches, and omelettes, all prepared simply but well.
The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, with a counter-style setup where you can enjoy your meal while chatting with friendly staff or other patrons. It’s a bit of a dive, but that’s part of its charm—there’s no pretension, just good, honest comfort food.
Service is fast and friendly, making it perfect for a quick bite or a low-key meal. While the diner is cash-only, it’s well worth a visit for those in the area or anyone looking for a taste of Jersey City’s diner history. The affordable prices and classic comfort food make White Mana a local gem for a nostalgic, satisfying meal.
The service was very hospitable. The worker there was a very friendly man and the exchange we had while ordering was very nice. We ended up ordering the two of the specials of 3 cheeseburger sliders, fries, and a drink for $10 which was a pretty good deal. We also got a cheesesteak, which we expected to be a sub but ended up being a sandwich instead.
The food was phenomenal. The burgers were juicy and full of flavor, I ended up eating them pretty quickly. They were so good, I ended up ordering a quarter pounder to try it and it tasted just as good. The fries were nice as well, I don’t really expect much out of fries if I’m being honest but these were crispy. The cheesesteak sandwich we got was also very delicious.
As for the atmosphere, it definitely feels like a time capsule of the 30s ( if that makes sense ). Very homely vibe, feels like a place you can just pop in very quick then pop out satisfied. Overall really happy with my experience here.
