Crouse Cafe in Indianola, IA has been a family tradition since 1946, when Bob and Cleo Crouse first opened their doors serving customers in Leon, Knoxville, and Indianola. In 1963, their son Richard and his wife Bonnie continued the business, and in 1970 the cafe moved across the street to its current home thanks to the advice of R.M. Hale. The legacy grew in 1987 when their children John, Bob, and Cindy stepped in, with John and Rhonda guiding the cafe for many years alongside family in the kitchen and dining room.

Grouse Cafe is located in Indianola across from the police department. Now I live in DesMoines, but I promise you, it’s worth the drive. I believe it’s been around since the 40’s and they continue to serve people with hospitality, & their food. They also serve a buffet on certain days at certain times, & it is fabulous. You won’t find instant mashed potatoes here. Every thing is delicious, with a home cooked flare. I believe it’s better than the Machine Shed. They have a white gravy that tastes just like my Mothers. The onion rights are to die for & their fried chicken is something special. The portions are big, and they treat you like family. There is some times a wait, but they shuffle a lot of people through there relatively fast. Definitely worth the wait. You will be glad you went there.

Great service and good home-cooked food. Noisy but very upbeat atmosphere! The servers were happy and maintained a sweet spirit, even though they were extremely busy. Real treasure to Indianola, Iowa!

Delicious…home cooking done right. This place has fresh food cooked just like your grandma did it back in the day. The waitress we had knew her stuff and was very helpful. She made sure we were taken care of and had our food out to us in short order. Everything we ordered were hot and fresh and tasted so good. This place is worth the drive and everyone should give it a try. We are going back on the weekend when they have their buffett. We definitely will be back!

We had eaten here a couple years ago and talked about coming back because the food was so good. This occasion was a different story. It was a Saturday afternoon and we arrived around 1 p.m. Not busy at all. We were seated upon arrival. The waitress was very friendly and got our drinks right away. I ordered the hot turkey sandwich (which I had on our first visit) and my hubby ordered the chicken fried steak. My turkey was a pinkish yellow color, I think instant mashed potatoes and the gravy…it was not good. It was brown and looked like it had been sitting in the pan because there was kind of scummy pieces in it like from when you let gravy cool down and it gets set on top. Overall mine was a big disappointment. My hubby’s chicken fried steak…another disappointment. He said the steak wasn’t too bad but the potatoes and gravy were awful. Usually when he orders this it comes with a white pepper gravy. This gravy was yellow, had absolutely no flavor and no pepper. Total bomb! I don’t know if it has changed owners or what happened but we will not be going back. And the restrooms were no clean and in desperate need of a good overhaul.

I left a positive review about 5 years ago and since we just stopped back in today, I thought I’d update the review.

Of course the food was great.

I had the Kristen’s Hot Sausage sandwich and a side of their famous onion rings, which were crispy and delicious-the sandwich was a 10.

The Mr had the traditional Hot Beef and had a slice of coconut cream pie for dessert. Both of which he said were excellent.

Portions are large and the price is great.

For 77 years they’ve provided great food and have an incredible staff of servers, cooks and anyone else there we’ve ever talked too.

This was our first trip to Crouse Cafe. After a short wait to be seated for a Sunday noon meal, we were greeted by a friendly waitress who explained our dining options.
A couple in our party had the chicken dinner special (ham balls were the other special but were already sold out). One of the other two people went with a Reuben sandwich and the other went with one of the many breakfast options on the menu, a generous plate of French Toast.
Everyone in our party enjoyed their food and the gracious service. We will definitely return to the Crouse Cafe to try some of the other food choices.
Based on today’s experience, get there early for Sunday lunch to make sure all of the specials and the wonderful looking pie are still available.

This family style restaurant has been my absolute favorite place to eat now for 15+ years. In all the times I’ve been there not once have they messed up my food AT ALL. Not even a missing straw. The food is always served fresh and hot so I definitely know what to expect when I walk in those doors. The staff has always been amazing, super friendly, willing to make you and your family laugh and feel comfortable there & help out with whatever they can. I could probably keep going with all the amazing things about this place. There’s something for everyone in the family. Highly recommend this place to anyone who has never been!

Crouse Cafe in Indianola. This place was VERY clean. They recently had an employee test positive for Covid, so they had to close down. Today is the first day they have been open since. We watched them thoroughly clean each table before they sat people down. They’re very nice and energetic. Mom got the Turkey club with a side of onion rings. The onion rings were thin and crispy. And moms turkey club was very filling. I think she ate half and was full. The Hot Beef was GOOD. Real mashed potatoes. Homemade gravy not from a packet. AND it was only $16 total! I would definitely return here!!
