Midway Mercantile WAY exceeded my expectations this last time! It is always a great experience there, but I especially want to highlight our server, Jamie, and our chef, Les, this time. My wife and I joined family there, and it is Lent, so my dietary restrictions were quite high. I asked Jamie if anything on the vegan menu could be made without any oil and told her that if not, I was more than fine having a salad without dressing. She went back to talk to the chef and he actually came out to ask me exactly what my restrictions were so that they wouldn’t get anything wrong. I told him I didn’t want to be a hassle and could just get the salad, but he wanted to go above and beyond and was eager and happy to make me a full meal. He asked spicy or not, then went back and made a new, surprise meal following all my extra restrictions. Spicy carrot noodles underneath braised vegetables and tofu, black garlic and sauce, all oil free. It looked so good and I was so excited, that I started eating before I took a picture of how well it was plated, so the pictures I posted don’t do it justice. Chef Les checked on me, shortly after serving the meal, to make sure it was right and that I enjoyed it. And then he came again to chat with us after dinner. He was incredibly chill, friendly, accommodating, and professional. Sometimes resturaunts get annoyed by dietary restrictions, especially heavy restrictions, but Chef Les saw it as opportunity to make a great memory for our group! Jamie was excellent in checking on us as well, coordinating with Chef Les, and making sure we had a wonderful evening! They both made professional, but fun, conversation and jokes with our group too. I didn’t catch our busser’s name, but he was fantastic too, always on the spot and never a moment late.
I’ve been to Midway Mercantile a few times over the years, and Chef John (I believe the owner as well) is always coming out to check on and talk with those dining. We have talked with him before and he is very professional, passionate and hospitable. His orange sauce is the best I’ve ever had! We’ve always been well pleased with the bartenders, servers, busses, food, atmosphere, etc. No complaints. They are very accommodating to all dietary preferences as well and even have a seperate vegan menu. It may be a finer resturaunt with a pricier menu, but you get way more out of it than what you pay for. They could definitely charge more, and I’m so glad they don’t!
The shrimp were slightly overcooked, but the grits more than made up for it! Buttery, cheesy, and cooked perfectly. The sauce had great depth from bacon, shallots, peppers, and tomato, with bright pops from the green onions.
The collard greens were also a standout, perfectly cooked, super savory, and no bitterness at all. Honestly better than most shrimp and grits I’ve had, even in New Orleans. Would absolutely order this again.
Our server was attentive and pleasant.
No complaints there!
The best part of the meal was my cocktail- blended perfectly with just the right amount of sweetness.
Ill try again, but sad the quality didn’t match up overall.
Definitely make a reservation, it is a busy place on weekends.
This place is good and although for this group it was a bit disorganized midway mercantile always does a good job.
