I had an excellent visit to Que Onda on North Tryon! The food was flavorful and fresh, but the Margaritas were the real showstopper—absolutely amazing.
What really made the experience stand out was the top-tier service. Huge thanks to Antonio and the bartender Dani for taking such great care of us. They were attentive, friendly, and made us feel right at home. I’ll definitely be back soon!

Atmosphere was nice. Food was good but needed an extra layer of flavor. We requested the verde sauce and that accented the other flavors. They do not serve free chips and dip like other traditional Mexican restaurants, it’s an additional upcharge. Also, sour cream, etc is an upcharge also. I ordered the shrimp tacos topped with pineapple, cilantro, etc. that came with a side of rice and beans. My friend ordered the $2 Tuesday special and chose 2 pork and 2 beef tacos.

Que Onda at University is one of my favorite spots close to home, and I’ll definitely keep coming back! I’ve visited several times – dinner with friends, on a date, Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and even one of their special events – and every experience has been fantastic.
On my most recent visit, I met up with friends for dinner and ordered the combination tacos. They were delicious and came with generous portions of rice and refried beans. The tacos themselves were large enough that three filled me up completely. We also shared the guacamole and salsa appetizer, which was fresh and flavorful. In the past, I’ve tried their birria and attended their margarita and guacamole event (Please host more of these at University. They’re so much fun!). I’ve even brought a group of 10–12 people during the busy Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and the service was still excellent.
The atmosphere is great, with a large outdoor patio, plenty of indoor seating, and a welcoming bar area. It’s always clean, the menu offers lots of choices, and the staff is consistently friendly and attentive. They also have a couple of other locations worth checking out. Highly recommend Que Onda for anyone looking for good food, great vibes, and a fun experience!

This was honestly one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a while. From the start, the atmosphere felt chaotic and unfriendly. Our server was rude, dismissive, and acted like we were bothering them just by asking basic questions about the menu. There was zero warmth or professionalism—but it was obvious they were overwhelmed, and the fault lies with management for overworking their staff.
We waited far too long for drinks and refills, and it was nearly impossible to get anyone’s attention. The whole place felt disorganized and understaffed. Instead of creating a good experience, the staff’s stress and frustration spilled over onto customers.
If this restaurant wants to keep customers coming back, management needs to hire more people and create a better work environment. When employees are miserable and stretched thin, it shows, and diners shouldn’t have to suffer because of it.
The food wasn’t bad, but service can absolutely ruin a meal—and in this case, it did. I won’t be returning.

Delicious! My boyfriend and I sat outside on a cool night, wonderful scenery, great music and even better food. The nachos were packed and so yummy, the flautas came with pickled onions (one of my favorites!) with delicious chicken, the streetcorn was just melt in your mouth flavor and seasoned to perfection and the churros? We went this evening as a family to celebrate my son’s graduation, and the entire experience was absolutely amazing. From the moment we walked in, every single person we encountered was genuinely kind, welcoming, and attentive. You could tell the staff truly cares about their guests.
The service was outstanding — friendly without being rushed, and so thoughtful the entire time. The food was incredible, full of flavor, beautifully made, and came out perfectly. Each dish we ordered was delicious, and everyone at our table kept commenting on how good everything was.
It was the perfect place to celebrate such a special moment for our family. We left feeling full, happy, and grateful for such a wonderful evening. Highly recommend!

Tried Que Onda for a bday celebration around lunch time on a Friday. This specific location wasn’t busy. We were seated right away and the food came out quickly and hot not long after we ordered. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Nachos and was highly impressed. Not only was it a decent amount of food for your money, but it was simply delicious! The service wasn’t all that great and the restaurant shares parking with other businesses. I would recommend trying here although I would try a different location to see if service is better there!
