We were driving through AL and planning a food stop when we found Champy’s. Not far off the highway, in a not too busy area, open on Sundays to a reasonable hour. Our server, Kayla, provided excellent service and excellent recommendations. My dining partner and I split the 4 tender basket and the catfish, with the okra after starting with an order of the smoked wings, half buffalo, half sweet heat. It was perhaps one of, if not the greatest meal we’ve ever eaten. Every single element from the buffalo sauce and the meat to the fries and the hush puppies were the best version of those things I have ever had. They will warn you, the tenders are massive. Tender is also the most apt descriptor for them. Both the chicken and the catfish just fell apart. The smoked wings had a delicious, snappy outside, the insides cooked perfectly. The wings definitely stand on their own, but don’t sleep on the buffalo or the sweet heat. The house ranch ties it all together. There’s apparently an open mic night on mondays. We started planning a trip back as soon as we got in the car.

This was my first time coming here. I ordered a three-piece wing meal with mashed potatoes and gravy and coleslaw along with a three pack of the hot tamales. The mashed potatoes were really good. I give them about an 8 out of 10 and the coleslaw was very different than what you normally get elsewhere, but not really my cup of tea… The tamales were OK I’ll give them about a 5 of 10. Honestly, I came for the chicken and I was severely letdown. It was very slimy and the crust was falling off of one piece. It was cooked totally different than the others as well. Not sure how that happens. Honestly, I really wanted to give a good review here because there was a good vibe and the people were so so so friendly. I think I might come back sometime and try one of the Poboy sandwiches or something.. for the $25 I spent I really didn’t even get full because I wound up feeding the chicken wings to my dog. Honestly, wouldn’t return for any of the things that I ordered today.

A friend recommended Champy’s, so I decided to try it for the first time—and wow, they weren’t kidding! The chicken is seasoned to perfection, and the aroma alone had me excited before I even took a bite. Anneliese was so friendly and made my first visit an awesome experience. This place absolutely lives up to the hype!

Yea I wouldn’t be able to rate the food today because I never got waited on and left. It took longer than it should to be seated. Once seated I got passed several times by wait staff, nobody spoke or said somebody would be with me or anything. After waiting longer than 5 minutes I left. Unfortunate that I drove 30 minutes to eat here.

Listen, if your mouth isn’t already watering, it’s only because you haven’t tasted the crispy, golden, magic of this fried chicken. If you’re within 100 miles of Champy’s and not already headed there, drop everything and go.
The moment your teeth sink in, you will hear it before you taste it … that perfect, loud crrrrrunch. For me, it was so loud, three people turned around thinking someone stepped on a Dorito. Every bite was hot, juicy, and impossibly satisfying. I needed windshield wipers for my chin.
I ate at the Alabaster location. The lady behind the bar was a standout … fast, friendly, and the kind of human who makes you feel like you’ve been coming there for years. Service was excellent, prices were more than fair, and the vibe? Laid back, authentic
, with just the right amount of grit and charm.
And my only complaint? I didn’t wear pants with an elastic waistband.
Still reading? WHY? Go. Get in your car.

Review of Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken
This was my second visit to Champy’s Famous Fried Chicken, and while the servers and staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, I’m uncertain if there will be a third visit. Their hospitality is top-notch, but unfortunately, the food left much to be desired.
As someone familiar with the authentic flavors of true Delta hot tamales, particularly those from Greenville, Mississippi, I found Champy’s version to be quite bland and lacking the distinctive, bold flavor one would expect. The fried chicken, while lightly fried, didn’t live up to its potential; a harder fry might have enhanced the texture and flavor. The shrimp po’ boy was another disappointment—it was underwhelming, with only about six shrimp and very little seasoning to elevate the dish.
I appreciate Champy’s effort to provide a unique menu, and I can see how those unfamiliar with the authentic taste of these dishes might enjoy the experience. However, for someone like me, who knows what these dishes are supposed to taste like, it missed the mark.
While I may not return, I still encourage others to give Champy’s a try and form their own opinions. Who knows? It might be exactly what someone else is looking for.

Y’all-
We recently have lost my mother- she and dad were married 56 years (363 days) so dad is really struggling….. he really enjoys the fried catfish there so today he took himself to Champy’s and while eating the waiter/waitress came by to check on him – seeing he was a bit sad- and asked him if he was ok?
My dad responded with ‘yes, other than recently losing my wife’
A few minutes later the staff told him his meal was comped-
My dad was so touched by their generosity. We don’t know who did it or how but what a act of true kindness that made my dad smile so big! Thank you-
For seeing a stranger and loving them like Christ would. Seeing dad smile these days is rare- thanks for making him smile.

This was our first visit. We enjoyed it. The decoration keeps you searching for weird items to look at. The food arrived pretty quick. We tried the Hot Tamales but I forgot to get a picture. They weren’t bad.

The food was excellent and the servers were very pleasant. If it’s a busy night, the wait time for your order is a bit long, but we’ll worth it. The noise level can be a bit high at times due to occasional parties. The prices are good considering the large amount of delicious food you get. Overall, it’s a great experience.
