Once known as the “skyscraper” of its day, the historic Germania Hall building, built in 1878, in downtown Wooster is now home to The City Square Steakhouse. Award-winning chef Mike Mariola and wife, Emily, opened The City Square Steakhouse in 2008. City Square promises a dining experience you’d expect from a big city while maintaining its historic small-town charm, and has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Steakhouses in America. The City Square Steakhouse is proud to exclusively use Certified Angus Beef products for all steaks and burgers. In addition to steaks, seafood, and other entrees, the inimitable flavor and delicacy of Butter Cake – City Square’s signature dessert – is truly the “cherry on top” of the City Square experience.

Vintage building offering prime cuts, burgers, seafood & drinks in a stylish interior & on a patio.

We did not have reservations but were seated upon entering! They have an enclosed patio space. The only downside was we were seated right next to a door that people used to enter and exit making it very chilly despite there being overhead heaters. We got the pork belly for an appetizer. The top was nearly impossible to chew as it was so hard and we both left the third piece as it was too difficult to chew. I got the petite filet and my partner got a sirloin. We both asked for it to be medium. If you see the picture you can see his steak has a clear pink center. Mine though was almost well done. Finally we got the crème brûlée which was described on the dessert menu as “topped with mixed berries”. As you can see it came with three mini blueberries. Overall the food wasn’t “bad”, but I was expecting a lot more. We likely won’t be back again despite there being several menu items that sounded yummy. Service was exceptional! Food though? just okay.

We went here for my wife’s birthday, she had been here before I hadn’t. Upon arrival the atmosphere was very welcoming. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. I will say the service was top-notch, our waitress was very friendly and attentive. They started with bread service which was hot and fresh. The food was amazing my wife had the Lemon Chicken and absolutely loved it. I had the Braised Short Rib and it was absolutely delicious. We started with an order of Crab cakes and they were good but I wouldn’t say they were fantastic. We finished our meals with dessert , my wife had the Cheesecake and I opted for the Butter Cake both of them were delicious. This definitely will be one of our go to restaurants especially for special occasions or just an elevated dining experience for the night.

Grace was a fabulous server!!! She knew the menu well and had recommended dishes for us. We were blown away by the pork belly appetizer. Would highly recommend this restaurant if you’re stopping in Wooster. We visited on a Sunday night around 4:30pm. Thank you Grace, you made our date night celebration special.

Delicious food and we had the best server Hannah! She made sure we had everything we needed, she made great drink recommendations and was just so cheerful and happy! It was such a nice lunch and a great break from driving in the snowstorm.

We have been here for our anniversary a couple of times over the years and had lovely experiences. So much so…It is our 40th anniversary this year and we picked to come to Wooster for its charm, close proximity to Amish country and most importantly to have a special dinner at the City Square. We were so excited to come to CS my husband made reservations last November as we planned this special event in our lives and picked the last night on our trip to celebrate in style.

We had reservations at 6:45 and arrived early 6:30 and seated right away. Disappointing does not begin to describe our experience. We were seat just fine and greeted and cared by a lovely waiter whom we do not fault with our experience. We ordered our drinks, cudos for having a Mocktail that was delicious!!! appetizer and dinner. Our drinks came right away and appetizer and came out 45 mins later and it went downhill from there. We waited quite a while for our salad and bread. And then waited and waited and even asked about the delay, a floor supervisor said they were having issues in the kitchen. Now mind you our half of the restaurant was half empty by this time. We did not receive our steaks until close to 9pm mine was over cooked and both our steaks were Luke warm. We were tempted to send the steaks back but didn’t want to waste anymore of our special evening at the restaurant. They did comp us a free dessert… we didn’t leave until 9:30pm ….. three hours after arriving. That is unacceptable and very disappointing. We waited over an hour for our main dinner to arrive after delayed apps and salad.

My first visit was not as good as the second one. I also ordered once to go.

Regardless, I did enjoy the food very much on the second visit, and the service. I recommend the New York Strip steak with garlic butter(it was so well prepared, it is the second-best steak I have eaten), with the Chef’s Choice vegetables or summer vegetables. If you like cocktails , for sure try the Passionfruit Daiquiri, you won’t regret it. For dessert the Seasonal choice is the best for Summer, the Passionfruit with mango and coconut crust tart with lemon or lime glaze, is sweet with a hint of sour which balances out the flavors. Also, the male server was chill, pleasant, smiled, and not overdoing it.

On the first visit, I tried the steak salad , Top Sirloin with wedge fries, crab cakes for appetizers, seasonal dessert, and drinks. Sadly, what I didn’t enjoy were a few things missing and it took like 15 minutes or more for someone to acknowledge us, or help us I had to get up from the table for someone to attend to us.

I will come return to this restaurant if visit Wooster again!

UPDATE: we went again after being invited by coworkers. The steaks came out super dry. I couldn’t finish mine.

The food is great, but the time you spend at the restaurant is literally unappetizing. Recently returned and our appetizer took an hour to get to our table, our salad came 15 minutes after, then our dinner 30 minutes later. The restaurant wasn’t packed and had empty tables. Basically two hours for our main entree. It was my birthday, I didn’t mention it because we wanted to leave instead of waiting for the desert. 2 hours gone sitting at a table mid week after working 12 hours was not what we expected. We left after 4 bites of our main entree. The food, the staff, the restaurant all great, just be prepared to hang out.

My wife and I tried The City Square Steakhouse for the first time last night and we enjoyed this dining experience immensely. I use the word experience because that is what is was. Our server Sami (sp) was extremely professional and attentive throughout the entire meal, the friendly manager also stopped by as well. The pace of service for the dishes was perfect, total dinner lasted a little over two hours and didn’t feel rushed at all.

We enjoyed two excellent bottles of wine from their extensive wine list, properly presented by our server. A Chateau de Chantegrive 2020 Sauvignon Blanc with our crab cake appetizer and salad (with a wonderful mustard vinaigrette) and a Justin cabernet with our entree. The bone in ribeye’s were outstanding and expertly prepared, my wife got the Killbuck valley mushrooms and sauteed onions on top and greatly enjoyed those. The loaded mashed potatoes were delicious and the creme brulee finished the meal off nicely.

Overall this was an elegant, upscale fine dining experience for a special occasion but we would feel comfortable enjoying it as a casual setting as well, you can tell that this place can fit whatever mood you want it to be. We are greatly looking forward to our next return.

My favorite steakhouse / special occasion restaurant in a 30 mile radius! Food is ALWAYS top notch. I can’t recommend it enough. Drink menu is fantastic. Desserts are to die for, and don’t get me started on the seafood Bisque . Staff is the most professional around. Everything you’d expect for a night out with a loved one and family. We’ve driven the 40 minutes just to have drinks and a piece of the Emily’s butter cake as a night cap. Fantastic. A+++

Had a late dinner at the bar, and the staff was super friendly and hospitable to a weary traveler. I ate pretty light but really enjoyed the perfectly prepared scallops and the Caesar salad w the house made dressing…well done. And the barkeep knew how to make a proper dirty martini, w ice crystals dancing on top… wish I’d not eaten on the road earlier and brought a bigger appetite to explore the menu a bit more. Hope I make it back.
