Once known as the “skyscraper” of its day, the historic Germania Hall building, built in 1878, in downtown Wooster is now home to The City Square Steakhouse. Award-winning chef Mike Mariola and wife, Emily, opened The City Square Steakhouse in 2008. City Square promises a dining experience you’d expect from a big city while maintaining its historic small-town charm, and has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Steakhouses in America. The City Square Steakhouse is proud to exclusively use Certified Angus Beef products for all steaks and burgers. In addition to steaks, seafood, and other entrees, the inimitable flavor and delicacy of Butter Cake – City Square’s signature dessert – is truly the “cherry on top” of the City Square experience.
Vintage building offering prime cuts, burgers, seafood & drinks in a stylish interior & on a patio.

We had reservations at 6:45 and arrived early 6:30 and seated right away. Disappointing does not begin to describe our experience. We were seat just fine and greeted and cared by a lovely waiter whom we do not fault with our experience. We ordered our drinks, cudos for having a Mocktail that was delicious!!! appetizer and dinner. Our drinks came right away and appetizer and came out 45 mins later and it went downhill from there. We waited quite a while for our salad and bread. And then waited and waited and even asked about the delay, a floor supervisor said they were having issues in the kitchen. Now mind you our half of the restaurant was half empty by this time. We did not receive our steaks until close to 9pm mine was over cooked and both our steaks were Luke warm. We were tempted to send the steaks back but didn’t want to waste anymore of our special evening at the restaurant. They did comp us a free dessert… we didn’t leave until 9:30pm ….. three hours after arriving. That is unacceptable and very disappointing. We waited over an hour for our main dinner to arrive after delayed apps and salad.
Regardless, I did enjoy the food very much on the second visit, and the service. I recommend the New York Strip steak with garlic butter(it was so well prepared, it is the second-best steak I have eaten), with the Chef’s Choice vegetables or summer vegetables. If you like cocktails , for sure try the Passionfruit Daiquiri, you won’t regret it. For dessert the Seasonal choice is the best for Summer, the Passionfruit with mango and coconut crust tart with lemon or lime glaze, is sweet with a hint of sour which balances out the flavors. Also, the male server was chill, pleasant, smiled, and not overdoing it.
On the first visit, I tried the steak salad , Top Sirloin with wedge fries, crab cakes for appetizers, seasonal dessert, and drinks. Sadly, what I didn’t enjoy were a few things missing and it took like 15 minutes or more for someone to acknowledge us, or help us I had to get up from the table for someone to attend to us.
I will come return to this restaurant if visit Wooster again!
The food is great, but the time you spend at the restaurant is literally unappetizing. Recently returned and our appetizer took an hour to get to our table, our salad came 15 minutes after, then our dinner 30 minutes later. The restaurant wasn’t packed and had empty tables. Basically two hours for our main entree. It was my birthday, I didn’t mention it because we wanted to leave instead of waiting for the desert. 2 hours gone sitting at a table mid week after working 12 hours was not what we expected. We left after 4 bites of our main entree. The food, the staff, the restaurant all great, just be prepared to hang out.
We enjoyed two excellent bottles of wine from their extensive wine list, properly presented by our server. A Chateau de Chantegrive 2020 Sauvignon Blanc with our crab cake appetizer and salad (with a wonderful mustard vinaigrette) and a Justin cabernet with our entree. The bone in ribeye’s were outstanding and expertly prepared, my wife got the Killbuck valley mushrooms and sauteed onions on top and greatly enjoyed those. The loaded mashed potatoes were delicious and the creme brulee finished the meal off nicely.
Overall this was an elegant, upscale fine dining experience for a special occasion but we would feel comfortable enjoying it as a casual setting as well, you can tell that this place can fit whatever mood you want it to be. We are greatly looking forward to our next return.
