Had a long overnight in Charleston and a buddy recommended The Grit Counter. Really glad he did.
I got the Famous Grit Flight 3 and chose Smoked Gouda, Jalapeño Cheddar Cheese, and Sweet Potato Pie.
I don’t even like grits but these were all extremely delicious. Honestly, the Gouda might have been the best (of the three that I tried) but not by much. I’m betting you’ll find something you like.
I also debated between the smash burger and the chicken sandwich but ultimately chose the Charleston Hot Chicken sandwich and I chose well. If you like spicy, you’ll really enjoy the heat. If you love spicy, it might not be your favorite as it’s a bit muted but it still has a fantastic crunch on the breading of the chicken while staying incredibly moist inside.
I recommend all of the above with a side of fried green tomatoes. Can never go wrong with those and interestingly enough, they cut theirs up differently than just flat slices.
Really hope I get to visit again soon.
It can be a bit noisy and cramped inside but there’s picnic tables out back if the weather is agreeable.

This place was bustling on a Sunday morning! Came in, got served quickly at the counter by a girl named Jess. Very, very nice and friendly!! I appreciate her!! The food was piping hot and came out quickly. Everything looked so so good and the portions are big. Very many options. I’m from California, but coming here made me feel very welcomed in SC! Would come here again if I had the choice!!

One of the best places I’ve been in awhile! The food was hot and delicious! I don’t eat pimento cheese but this place truly changed my mind with their fritters! Everything that I had was good but the service is unmatched! Be sure when you visit you see Paul! He welcomes everyone that comes though the door, he explains the menu, placed orders from memory, made sure drinks were full, made drinks, answered questions, cleaned the counter space, and did it all with a smile! You definitely can’t go wrong with the gem!

Absolutely a 5 star experience!! From walking into the door to exiting the building, nothing but good vibes and great food! Alfonso and Paul did an outstanding job with educating me on the menu and receiving my order. The food was simply… magical. My taste buds and soul agree. Hot food, great flavor, amazing presentation! (See photos and videos) Really, the best eating experience I’ve had in North Charleston, SC. And a big shout out to the cooks who did the thing and even conversed with me. And I had to take a bag (which they have to go containers set aside for you) home… Bliss…

I have never in my life had such good grits. I was not expecting such a big bowl or food that wasn’t dripping in grease. The atmosphere was layed back and the service was great and quick. Everything was fresh and perfect. Definitely a favorite

So. First time here with my husband and we both agreed that this will NOT be our last. The set up is pretty streamlined and the environment was juuust right. We sat at the bar area (LOVED that the bar was actually wide enough to have food and a drink in front of you), Paul served us and he had great energy, recommendations, and really worked an incoming crowd like a pro!
Now back to the bites- AMAZING!
We had The Dirty Bird & The Self Respecting Southerner.
For drinks I decide to try something outside of my comfort zone and man it did NOT disappoint. The Honeysuckle Spritzer was the perfect blend of flavors for a little pick me up.
Lastly- the banana pudding ice cream… yes- I said ice cream! We were just as shocked and we certainly should’ve ordered 2 instead of sharing 1

Non resident here (anymore) and I saw the photos of the food from a Google search and drove straight there! They did not disappoint! Great feel as soon as I walked in during Sunday brunch. Ordered to go and the food came up before I could sip half of my small coffee. My wife and I were thoroughly impressed! Shrimp & grits were amazing, collards so delicious, and chicken fried beautifully! We are going back before we leave town!

Probably best restaurant for this trip. (Price and quality of the food)
Chicken and waffle was amazing chicken is very crispy but moist/tender inside. Cranberry (?) chutney with the chicken makes it next level. Also the bacon cube combination. Grits flight was a neat idea and we loved all. Grits burger was also delicious.
Staff was very nice and loved the atmosphere. We also thought logo was cute Highly recommended.

The food was very good and the stop was really friendly. This is our first time in Charleston and our first time trying out this restaurant. I got to say that their claim to the best grits is true! Haven’t had better grits than what this restaurant serves. For people that hate grits you haven’t tried good ones yet and I promise you if you try it here you’ll fall in love. The staff was really friendly and the place was very clean I think they’re fairly new as well. Me and my wife build our own bowl. My wife is vegetarian and she ordered the pimento grits with fried green tomatoes and corn and tomatoes while I got I think it’s Gouda cheese grits with fried flounder collard greens and fried mushrooms and I got to say the mushrooms were amazing in the biggest plus is there is something for both of us! The only thing we weren’t a big fan of was there hush puppies as it’s not as good as the other restaurants that we’ve been at. Overall will definitely come back when we visit Charleston.

I looked this place up and the reviews were awesome! The food I got was great. The grits I love! The burger I got I loved! The only part about the whole experience was when my husband went inside to go use the little boys room, he basically had to busted down our whole table. I mean cleaning up after yourself and your party I can see but doing that job that I’m not paid to do, I don’t think so. So even tho the food was great!! I don’t think we will be going back. Thank you guys!
