Haitian cuisine meets Pacific Northwest bounty at kann, a live-fire restaurant from James Beard Award winning chef Gregory Gourdet. The restaurant honors his heritage and culture while also honoring the seasons and local ingredients of Oregon. The name kann (cane in Haitian Creole) is a tribute to one of Chef Gregory’s favorite childhood memories in Haiti, where he’d listen for sugar cane vendors to come by with wheelbarrows overflowing with the freshly-harvested snack. That memory and more are the inspiration behind the menu that showcases traditional Haitian flavors along with new dishes inspired by the cuisines of the African & Caribbean diaspora.

One of the best culinary experiences that I have ever had. From the moment we sat down to the last bite of our dessert, it was an experience. The drinks were very good and they had lots of variety. We were told the Cauliflower was the second hottest thing on the menu, but it was not hot to us at all. It was very delicious. You should get 2 orders of the plantain brioche because you’ll definitely want more. Everything was seasoned to perfection and made with love.
The chicken had a delicious crispiness and the cabbage that accompanied it was perfectly smoky and tender. The Pork Coppa was tenders and soft. It was almost like a tender steak. But the banana upside down cake with the rum raisin ice cream was by far the best. Go with lots of people who like to eat as a community so you can try everything!
Make a reservation, early!

Finally got to check Kann off the list! Honestly? It’s a bit of a mixed bag. Is it the best food or dining experience I’ve had in Portland? No. The flavor combinations and drinks are definitely unique, and they really nail the ‘fancy’ atmosphere. But the price point feels significantly higher than the level of uniqueness and flavor actually deserves. I’m glad I tried it, but I doubt I’ll be back or bringing out-of-town guests here when there are so many other amazing spots in the city.

KANN absolutely lived up to the hype and made for an unforgettable dining experience
We enjoyed the warm sweet potato bread, Akra (crispy taro fritters), griyo (twice-cooked pork), and the coffee-rubbed New York strip- every dish was outstanding.
The atmosphere really completed the experience. The space encourages conversation and has a welcoming, almost family-style feel that makes you want to stay awhile. You can truly feel the care and intention behind both the food and the environment.
If you’re visiting Portland, this restaurant is well worth the reservation. I would absolutely return.

If you haven’t been, you should definitely try!
I’m giving it a 4-star review though because I am feeling like the quality is slipping. It’s my 4th time here this year and it’s the first time I’m disappointed. Ordered the same drink twice and while the first one was amazing, the encore tasted different but not bad.
Ordered the creole duck (second time having this in a few months) and it was disappointing, which hurts given the pretty high cost. The first time, the duck was great – seasoned well, sauce was balanced and added a ton to the duck. This time, it was an INCREDIBLY sweet glaze that overpowered everything. It’s not enough to complain to the staff about but it wasn’t enjoyable. The desserts (mosaic ice cream and the apple tartlette) were disappointing too. The ice cream was just not tasty, too frozen, etc. the tart was mushy.
The other dishes were good but it has kind of lost the edge of being great. We will still come back but will probably take a short break! This restaurant IS amazing and I believe in it and people should definitely go – but if things don’t taste right, don’t do what I did, and actually speak up!

Eating at Kann filled my heart with so much joy. I was eating alone at the bar but couples on both sides of me turned the evening into a communal affair. The gift of being welcomed coupled with the amazing food was a night to behold. I’d love to return and try more things on the menu. My only negative review is that the peanut creamed greens were so heavily peanutty that it was impossible to enjoy the collards. That diri ak sos pwa…chef’s kiss.

Made a bad choice by going to this restaurant to celebrate my birthday dinner. First, the server was pushy for us to order more items from the menu, as they said the food might not be enough. I told them that we’ll get two items to start, as the servings are “family-style”, and was told that we need to order everything all at once. We got our drinks from the no proof beverage menu and while they tasted pretty decent, there was too much ice in them. We got the Griyo Twice Cooked Pork for our appetizer, and sadly, the flavours didn’t pack a punch. I can tell that the ingredients were fresh but the dish was poorly executed. The Creole Smoked Duck was our main course and the most expensive item on the menu, which we waited for a long time for to come to our table. It was a gamble to order this and it felt like a big loss. Apparently, this dish took days to prepare but unfortunately, this is something that didn’t reflect in what we got. It was smothered in an unbearably sweet sauce and we couldn’t taste the smoke component at all. The sweet potato wraps and pickled onion that came with it however, were okay but that’s about it. In addition, the atmosphere was the opposite of cozy as the place felt chaotic with all the noise. Being seated at the chef’s counter and seeing the staff prepare the food, some practices were questionable like mass-produced items that were sitting out in the open and excessive use of plastic containers at a restaurant that is supposedly award-winning. Overall, I will not come back here again as it is not the dining experience I expected to have on a special occasion and I would not recommend this place to family and friends.

This food is so incredible that it’s officially my go-to Portland tradition. As a Haitian native, several dishes, especially the diri ak sos pwa, tasted just like my grandma’s cooking. Truly a taste of home.

Anyone not rating this place 5* is off their rocker. Best meal I’ve had in Portland. One of the best meals I’ve had anywhere in years. And the service was excellent; easily the best I’ve had in the PNW. 10/10 would recommend to anyone with taste buds. What a gem. I wish they’d open up a second location in Houston.

Eating out with a long list of allergies is always stressful for me. Every year when my friend group goes out, I eat beforehand so I don’t inconvenience the staff. My allergies are my responsibility, not theirs. I’ve accepted that food is often something I watch others enjoy rather than participate in.
Kann completely changed that.
Not only did the team take my allergies seriously, they went out of their way to prepare a meal I could safely eat. Beyond that, they consistently checked in on me and our table throughout the night. I never once felt like a burden or an afterthought.
Food is such a deeply social experience, and Kann gave that back to me. I was able to fully participate with my friends, to share the table, the moment, and the joy instead of sitting on the sidelines. That may sound small, but it’s enormous when you live with constant food restrictions.
I could honestly cry writing this. I felt seen, cared for, and welcomed in a way that rarely happens. The food was incredible, but the kindness and thoughtfulness of the staff is what I’ll remember most.
Thank you, Kann, for making space for me at the table. It meant more than you know.

I think this place is overhyped. The menu is very limited especially if you don’t eat pork or beef, most of the options are not worth it. The atmosphere is like an open dining hall. The food was ok starting from the bread with butter, smoked shrimp and the snapper soup. The baked Haiti was too sweet and full of coconut creme for my taste. I was expecting a bit high with the price point, this place is not for me. Service was great by the way. Make sure you have a reservation.
