Check us out on FB or at our website . It’s been 46 years and our goal is for another 46 years in downtown Bath.
Since 1979, J.R. Maxwell & Co has been serving the midcoast area’s most extensive American menu, including locally bought seafood, veal and chicken dinners, Black Angus steaks, and award-winning clam chowder. Our restaurant on Front Street in Downtown Bath is where the locals go for a night out and where everyone knows your name.
Longtime standby for prime rib, lobster in many styles, chowder & other hearty American favorites.

J.R. Maxwell & Co. is an outstanding American restaurant choice in downtown Bath. My buddy had just flown into Boston from Colorado, so we came here for just one thing – seafood! Known for great steaks and seafood, they serve it up righteously here in this cozy and historic building which, along with sitting fireside, makes for great atmosphere. We started off with a Margarita and beer, and then had delicious Crab Stuffed Mushrooms and Coconut Shrimp for appetizers. For the main course, I went with the superiorly fresh Maine Scallop & Haddock Combo while my friend dove into the Seafood Broil. We topped all that off with Key Lime Pie, and another round of drinks before schlepping off down the road to our hotel. This place is just fantastic. Highly recommended.

As a former chef I was not impressed with the food here. Our food was over cooked with very small portions and for the money about $80 I would of expected a bit more. The plates were thrown together looked like a greasy spoon diner with incompetent cooking skill. That said, our wait staff was amazing. He did all he could to make sure we were happy given the food situation. Im not saying I’d never go back but I am saying whomever is in the kitchen needs to step it up a LOT and serve food you can be proud of.

We went for a dinner- craving seafood- and hadn’t been to this restaurant in years.
Our server was very nice but the wait to get our order was crazy-long. She seemed to be only able to deal with one table at a time…
We ordered mussels for an appetizer and they were delicious. The butter sauce was so good!
Our dinner took almost another 45 minutes to come out- after the appetizer. When it arrived, it was lukewarm.
The fried clams, although clearly had been sitting in the window for a long time, were flavorful, and my husband said the haddock was good. His baked potato was so lukewarm that the e butter would t melt.
Overall, the dinner selections were mid and not served hot. We were disappointed…

Travis was exceptional. I didn’t order anything that I needed to screen for my lactose intolerance, but sometimes I do. He made a point to ask if I had allergies after taking my order. That was so kind and he alerted the kitchen staff. Best BLT I’ve ever had. I had it on a brioche bun. Amazing. Thank you Travis

Had a great time, Rowan, Marry-Anne and Mikaela were all amazing.
The food was delicious, started with shrimp cocktail for appetizer and then moved on to the salmon with a lemon raspberry cake for dessert. The portions of the entree were small but the appetizers and dessert were large. Everything tasked great, and the staff was attentive and friendly.

This place was recommended by our hotel and sure was worth it. We had 3 in our party. It’s still off-season, and it was a rainy night so maybe that’s why the restaurant wasn’t very busy. But, I bet in summer its jumping. The food was fantastic. We tried the fish and chips, quiche, hamburger soup, chicken sandwich. Fresh fish, perfect quiche and the soup was magical. There was nothing leftover on anyone’s plates. Service was good and the atmosphere is a little dark but inviting family feel.

Sat in a cute area with lots of Christmas ambience, but it was by the door and it’s winter so it was cold. Not to mention they had a whole other dining area completely unused the whole time we were there where it was away from the door so we could have been warm.
The food took a very long time
To come out. My pasta was hot the steak was cold.
Starters:
Free bread and butter; “To die for” taste slightly sweet is super soft with a flakey crust ontop. The butter is the good kind and adds a nice creamy texture and adds more depth to the flavor of the bread.
Fried Cheese sticks; looked very appetizing but did not taste as good as they looked. Reminded me of string cheese fried in a very light crunchy batter. There was not enough breading compared to the amount of cheese.
Entrees;
Big Alfredo pasta;
Over seasoned yet barely any flavor at all. The amount of seasoning, I think parsley flakes and pepper, made the sauce chunky in the most unpleasant way, like being stabbed by tiny sharp flakes with every bite. Very underwhelming.
Steaks and fries:
Flavor was “alright” but the steak was cold. Would have been better if it was served hot. The fries were decent but lacked seasoning.

We got fried clams and they were not fried to order they were microwaved. We got baked loaf of bread at first we were brought out store bought bread slices because they didn’t have a loaf ready. I complained and got a loaf but it was baked probably days before and microwaved. The top was still hard for christ sakes. Got the 40$ prime rib. It was not cooked to a proper temperature so it was still rubbery. The prime rib was taken out of the fridge cut to a measly quarter inch thick and once again microwaved. The fat was still white and hard. My knife couldn’t even cut through the prime rib. The jus was way too salty. Overall a terrible experience there everything was microwaved and they had the gall to charge me 120$ for this. JR Maxwells ruined our valentines. Never coming back

My family and I were visiting from Va. Had our Thanksgiving dinner here and it was amazing! Our dinner had all the traditional sides with your choice of Turkey or Ham. Lots of Dessert options!.. quite impressed with the pumpkin cheesecake and key lime pie. Honorable mention for the special cocktails.
Can’t forget the impeccable service with our waitress and the attention Arrolyn gave me thru all this. Will be back again for sure! Thank you!

We were wrapping up a weekend in Bath, and about to return to Boston, and we stopped in for a quick bite. I spent the past few days ordering French onion soup or chowder at each meal – the French onion soup was the best I had in 3 days of tasting! It put me in a great place to remember Bath and head back to the real world!
My wife opted for the key lime pie – and she was happy all the way home, too!
