Recently, at the suggestion of my Japanese culture enthusiast colleague KK, I decided to try Snowfox, a sushi kiosk located within a Kroger market. This excursion was highly recommended by my colleague and Japanese culture enthusiast, KK. Upon arrival, I discovered that the kiosk was situated in a quiet corner of the Kroger building, featuring a simple counter and dining area, though the latter could easily belong to the nearby Starbucks. After perusing the assortment of packaged sushi rolls and other varieties displayed on the shelf beneath the counter, I opted for the Wednesday Special Fresh Tuna Roll and Wednesday Special Fresh Salmon Roll packs. Priced at only $6 each, these packs were a bargain compared to their regular-priced counterparts, which cost nearly twice as much. Unfortunately, there was no staff around to offer any traditional service. However, as a self-proclaimed introvert, this suited me perfectly. I made the payment for the sushi packs just like any regular item.
Upon returning home, I eagerly opened the packages, only to discover that both were served cold. I decided to let them sit in the kitchen for a while, as I feared that any attempt to heat them up could potentially ruin the taste. Once the sushi rolls had reached room temperature, I eagerly began to dig in. As the sushi rolls came without sauce, I decided to make my own special chili soy sauce by combining sriracha and soy sauce in a 1:2 ratio. The first bite of sushi was not what I had hoped for. The sweetness of the sushi rice was overwhelming and made me cringe, and I could detect a faint hint of butter. Additionally, the rice was quite chewy, but melted easily in my mouth. I was unable to taste any flavors from the other ingredients, except for the avocado. The sauce helped a lot, adding the much-needed spiciness and savory flavor to each bite, and also dampened the rice.
Despite my initial excitement, I must admit that the sushi was underwhelming, and I did not feel like I was eating sushi at all. Instead, it felt more like eating rice balls. That being said, it is entirely possible that other varieties on offer would be more to my liking. Until I have the opportunity to try these other options, I will hold off on offering a definitive rating.
