Came in around 3pm 03/04 during happy hour and ordered a Agua fresca (which I’ve never known to ever contain alcohol) and when I ordered it I wasn’t asked for my ID or anything brought up of it containing alcohol and got it and drank a few drinks and started to feel not right and asked the server if there was alcohol in it for him to respond “yes it contains liquor” I said “well I didn’t know that when I ordered it I am pregnant” and his response was “I can make one without” not a sorry or anything. Not only was I not asked for my ID I was also served and drank some of a drink with alcohol in it while pregnant… if server was following proper procedures this would have been avoided.

Monday special $8 burritos. Most of the seating was happening outside in the patio, I wondered if that was the reason for bad service since I was seated inside. No eating utensils were provided, and count spot a server, so I walked around looking for clean utensils. A water refill came too late. The waiter was very nice, just the vibe of the place seemed a bit unorganized for a lunch rush. Veggie burrito was 7 out of 10. Beans were good. I’m not a fan of corn in rice. Chips and salsa were good

We have always loved this place… but we went last week and it was a bit of a train wreck. Noone created us… the bartender saw us and ran over to seat us… and informed us that she would also be our waitress. She was awsome and worked her tail off. They were clearly short staffed. They were also out of the tequila they use in all their margaritas. And the music was blaring loud. The bartender/waitress happily turned it down when we mentioned it. This was NOT issue with staff… but management needs to step up and manage much better if they want to retain customers.We have always loved this place… but we went last week and it was a bit of a train wreck. This is a welcoming space with lots of outside seating. We came on a perfect evening for outside dining and enjoyed our meal. We were there right at dinner time, and we were seated immediately.
They are happy to adjust meals to meet your preference, and they definitely have their own flavors. From the chips and salsa to the drinks to the dinner selection, their flavors are unique. I would have liked more fish in my fish tacos, and my husband would have liked more beef in his beef burrito. Outside of that, everything was very nice and we would like to eat there again.

I’ve been here a number of times and have always had excellent margaritas and service. Showed up today and was met with panic from a server as we were trying to get seated. Was told they were short staffed and that it would be a 45 minute wait to be seating outside. Keep in mind there was 4-5 tables outside empty and the restaurant was maybe 1/4th full. My girlfriend and I both thought she was joking with us at first. She went on to say that everyone at the bar was waiting for seats outside. I asked for an empty seat that was near the patio and she then told me we wouldn’t be seated for 10-15 minutes so everyone could “catch up”. Again the restaurant was almost completely empty. Before we could even answer if that was okay she turned around and walked off leaving us just standing there. The employee was an absolute mess and made it clear our business was not wanted. Disappointing as we drove 30 minutes for a place that has been good in the past. We will not return.

My partner and I visited this location only once together so I can’t speak on all aspects compared to the Red Bridge location (see that review for more details.) But at the Brookside location we got sat quickly and enjoyed an outdoor brunch on the patio. I will say this location has a much different vibe than the other simply because the inside is much smaller so you’re limited to sitting outside. I’m not positive how they keep it comfortable in winter months but on a nice day it’s great. I had the shrimp tacos and my partner had the steak tacos. We both thought everything was fresh and tasty! The chips were a bit stale so that was a downside but aside from that the rest of our drinks and food were accurate and fresh. Our server was friendly and attentive. We had a baby girl with us during this visit and the server made sure we had what we needed if anything for her! The servers at this location are much quicker to turn tables over and sanitize surfaces to allow for guests to have a safe and comfortable experience so I appreciate that a lot! Would come back again for sure.

Re-visited in 2025 and I am disappointed in the service and food here. Visited for an early dinner and service was terrible, food took an extraordinarily long time to get to us. It was painfully over-salted, and it was over-cooked. I had the lettuce wraps. This choice was because you cannot order items like individual street tacos a la carte. Which is ridiculous. Doubt I’ll be back to the barrio.
Review from four years ago: I really enjoyed my visit to Brookside Barrio. It’s a lot more open than I expected. A great patio, and a lot of it is shaded. Their tortilla chips are very crunchy. I had the grilled fish tacos which I really liked. The server seemed a little rushed/inpatient with us but overall it wasn’t bad service. We were there for a meeting and we did stay 2.5 hours but there were a lot of other tables empty so I didn’t feel we were holding anything up. We also had several cocktails during this time, too. There is street parking for this restaurant, the entrance is on ground level, and the restrooms are accessible. They had tables spread out well for the pandemic and they were all wearing masks, properly.

This was the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant. Period. Our waiter was as high as a freakin kite and couldn’t get anything right-and he even all but admitted it to us! OMG. We had to continually track servers down to get anything, including just water after we had been seated for 15 minutes! We should have left right away. We ordered queso and it was dropped at our table but we never received chips & salsa so had no chips to eat the queso! We had to ask bartender to get us some chips. Our server had to come to our table 3 times to get our order (which was only 2 orders of tacos) because he was too high to get it right?! It took 15-20 mins to get a margarita because our server forgot to put in the order-he even told us that! We should have asked for a manager but to track anyone down but the bartender there was nearly impossible. We had to go to the bar to pay our tab because we couldn’t find our server again. But, we found him on the way out…he was just sitting in a booth on his phone with 2 other servers- just hanging out not working for tips! We were there for 2.5 hours for some tacos and margaritas. Not at all worth it!!!

We ended up unexpectedly at Brookside Barrio on a Friday afternoon was perfect weather, perfect food, and best of all, hands down our favorite customer service in Kansas City, a server named Hal. This young man has the “it” factor! He took remarkable care of us!
If you want to go somewhere, that makes you feel special, go to the Brookside Barrio can, and ask for Hal!

This time we had the Monday special, burritos… they did not disappoint! The black beans are a little on the spicy side for those of you who are sensitive to spice.
Even on this hot day in KC, the fans provided a perfect amount of breeze on the patio… great background music and the buzz of playful conversions in this lovely space provided for a beautiful meal!
