The Press Gang is a perfect restaurant for a night out and seafood cravings. I have recommended to many visiting colleagues for a taste of Halifax seafood. We had the Land and Sea feast and WOW, this was amazing. The lobster was succulent and sweet. We especially liked the shrimps as well, so buttery! The red meat was amazing, lamb and steak perfectly cooked. Truly a treat of a plate.

The Press Gang Restaurant & Oyster Bar made for a perfect Halifax night out. Tucked into a historic stone cellar, it feels warm and intimate the moment you walk in. We started at the oyster bar—sparkling-fresh East Coast oysters with classic mignonette and a squeeze of lemon—then moved on to beautifully executed mains (think buttery lobster and a perfectly cooked steak). Cocktails were balanced, service was attentive without hovering, and the pacing let us linger and enjoy. It’s a special-occasion spot that still feels relaxed and welcoming. Pro tip: book ahead and arrive a little early to grab a seat at the oyster bar before dinner.

Short points:
– The restaurant was packed, and we had 3 different people serve us throughout the 2.5hrs we were there
– Risotto was undercooked, but seafood on top was overcooked and rubbery, or mush.
– Steak was way too undercooked
– They tried to be original with the dessert, but ended up making a hazard instead.
– Atmosphere was lacking. Loud, with weird music choices.
– The first time we went, we’d rated it a 5. This time was a 3 (and that’s generous)

Full story:
I had previously given this restaurant a 5-star review, but that was a year ago, and things have obviously changed since then.
My fiancé and I went in to celebrate our five year anniversary. It was a very busy night, and there seemed to be one server for our small section in the back, and multiple “runners”, because we had 3 different people serve us throughout the night.
We ordered oysters to start. The server must have misheard when we ordered 2 of each oyster, because he only brought us 1 of each. He quickly fixed it, but then a different server (or runner) brought my fiancé’s appetizer (The Beef, Bacon and Blue – which he approved of, but said the Blue Cheese overpowered it too much), and then third server brought our mains. They contiued to rotate throughout the night, so you had no idea who would be coming up next.
I ordered the seafood risotto, and my fiancé ordered the Tide and Stride. Everything was presented beautifully, as usual, but the kitchen seemed to be struggling with cooking times that night. The rice in my risotto was crunchy in spots, and the shrimp and scallops on top were rubbery, but the lobster was mush. My fiancé’s steak was so raw it was chewy, and he ordered it medium. We would have said something, but our first few bites were fine, and that’s of course when the server came to check on us. We had also waited 1.5hrs by that point for our food, and didn’t feel like waiting again.
Dessert was an experience. Since I am Gluten Intolerant, I ordered the Flourless Chocolate Espresso Cake. My fiancé ordered the Vanilla Creme Brulee. The cake came on top of a “sugar table” that was edible, but not worth eating. I broke the sugar apart, but it was so thick, it became sharp where it broke, and it was hard to eat. It was also tasteless. We’d recommend the Brulee.
Lastly. Why would a lovely restaurant, with a romantic, candle-lit atmosphere in one of the oldest buildings in Halifax be playing 90/2000’s pop/rock on the radio? Everybody in our section was laughing at how ridiculous it was to have such a random, and out of place playlist on. The table next to us even asked them to switch the music to something else. The last time we were in, there was lovely instrumental music on, what happened to that?

I was disheartened because the first time we came here, we absolutely adored it, and raved for months about how good the food is. But now, I wish we had went somewhere else, because paying $350 for what we received was not worth it.

I had an amazing dinner at this restaurant and bar! I ordered the lobster, jumbo shrimp, and scallop risotto, it was absolutely DELICIIIOUUUS and you could really taste the freshness of the seafood. They also have a great and varied menu, plus an oyster bar that looked fantastic. The barmaid was super friendly and attentive, I told her the type of alcohol I liked and a bit about my taste, and she took care of the rest. The drink she made was a real delight Definitely a place I’d recommend and would love to come back to!

Wow. Just wow. The food here…absolutely amazing. The bartender was a foodie! Knew exactly what I should order and he did not disappoint. Even down to the drink pairing. I highly recommend the oysters, and the risotto! The dessert was fantastic as well! I wanna come back to Halifax once a month just for this spot!

Absolutely highly recommend this restaurant. Staff was extremely attentive. Very knowledgeable on the whole menu. Including drink selections. The chowder was absolutely delicious. I had the Tide and Stride. The steak was absolutely perfectly seasoned and cooked. The bacon wrapped, lobster stuffed scallops were absolutely to die for. It will definitely be a staple for every time i come back to Halifax.

After returning to the Press Gang for the first time in over 15 years, we were excited to relive our fond memories of the “The Drill” tasting menu. This time, we opted for a la carte, starting with oysters and a main course.

The oysters, at $3.75 each, were more expensive than we’ve seen in Toronto. We ordered 16, which were just okay. We also found it odd that we weren’t offered bread, and the amount of lemon provided was stingy.

The by-the-glass wine selection was quite limited. For our mains, we ordered the halibut and the tenderloin, both of which were overcooked despite our request for medium.

While the ambiance was as wonderful as we remembered, the service was inconsistent—at times overly attentive and at others, completely absent. Overall, we were a little disappointed. We spent 300$ for 2 …

The Press Gang was our favorite restaurant during our two-week trip to Nova Scotia. Housed in one of the province’s oldest buildings, dating back to 1759, it offers a unique and memorable dining experience. We shared the oysters, the ‘Bulkeley’ Salad, and the Beet Salad to start. For our mains, we had the Tide and Stride and the Lobster Boil—both were outstanding. Our server was warm, attentive, and made the experience even better. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious. We’ll definitely be coming back!
