Our daughter from Texas was visiting, and we enjoyed a great meal here. We ordered the four meat sampler platter to split. We had pork, chicken, brisket, and ribs. I like the brisket the best, followed by the pork. The fried okra was good, just a little salty. I really liked the beans!
Our server took great care of us.
Unfortunately, this visit was extremely disappointing. We were told that the BBQ restaurant changed to the better, which was not the case at all. Therefore, I decided to adjust the rating accordingly. It took 28 minutes to get the food, which by then was still incomplete. The restaurant was about 50% full at 5:00 pm. The food was ok, the service very uncoordinated, with wrong food, small portions, charging for sides extra, when they were supposed to be part of the meal, and toast was left out. Food handling was questionable. The outdoor area was dirty, had not been cleaned or pressure washed in a while. Not a dog friendly environment. Two other people, waiting for their food orders for about 20 minutes, actually cancelled their orders and requested refunds. One person was so frustrated that he just walked out. My personal score is 3.0.

I enjoy the character and location of the restaurant. The BBQ is good, well seasoned, and the pulled pork is above average. The coleslaw is excellent, and good portions for the hungry bbq community. Plenty of parking right there. The prices are good for the food quality. The baked beans are supposed to be very good. Service is solid, not at all “close to 5.0”. I personally prefer a location and restaurant like this over a big chain restaurants. My score 4.7
We first called ahead, only to be told they were closing an hour early for a private event. No big deal, we just decided to come the next day instead. When we arrived around 5:30 p.m., we were told there would be a wait because the kitchen was backed up. Oddly enough, the restaurant wasn’t busy. We ended up waiting about 20 minutes just to be seated, during which several groups behind us decided to leave after hearing that the kitchen might be running low on meats. We decided to stay, hoping they still had the brisket we came for.
While waiting, we noticed the staff standing around chatting instead of cleaning up, several tables were dirty and unorganized. Looking toward the kitchen, it also appeared very dirty, and we even saw some servers eating/snacking right next to the prepared food. They had gloves on, but it still felt unhygienic and unprofessional.
After finally being seated, we ordered the brisket plate with sides. Unfortunately, the food was completely underwhelming. The cornbread was burnt around the edges and lacked flavor. Of the three slices of brisket, two were extremely dry, like they’d been sitting out all day. The sauces were the worst part; every single one had the consistency of water. I tried grabbing bottles from other tables thinking we just had a bad batch, but they were all the same. Even worse was the flavor which was mostly just vinegar and for the side they call coleslaw that just tasted like vinegar too.
Overall, we left really disappointed. It’s a shame because our first visit was great, but after this experience, we both agreed we wouldn’t be coming back.
Poole’s wasn’t even on my list, as I just stopped in on my way through town.
The food is unbelievable.
The brisket burnt ends were perfectly rendered and juicy, with an incredible sweet Smoke, and the kielbasa was perfectly done. It has been probably a good two years since a restaurant has absolutely blown my socks off, and I imagine that I probably visit three new restaurants a week. Wonderfully done guys.
