Amazing food and interesting atmosphere. Staff were so nice and friendly. I ordered the surf and turf and it was delicious! The lobster portion was a bit small the steak was good but the flavor of the sauce made the experience. My husband got the strip steak and was pleased with it. For dessert we got the creme brunette and the top was was done to a crip perfection.

Saturday afternoon visit in February.
Wasn’t busy, quiet and easy to talk. Both of us enjoyed what we had to eat. Prices were good considering the quality of the food.
Would definitely come here again.

What an absolute gem! I had an incredible dining experience at Olde Jaol Steakhouse and Tavern, tucked away in the historic former Wayne County Jail. The ambiance is unforgettable—especially down in the basement tavern, where the exposed brick arches from the original jail create this moody, atmospheric vibe that’s equal parts rustic and romantic. It’s like stepping back in time while enjoying top-notch modern eats.
We started with the calamari appetizer, and it was a standout: perfectly crispy, lightly seasoned, and served with a zesty marinara that had just the right kick. No chewiness here—pure perfection.
For the main, I went with the ribeye, and oh man, it was cooked exactly to medium-rare as requested. Juicy, flavorful, with that beautiful char on the outside and a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness inside. We paired it with the green beans—crisp, buttery, and seasoned just right with a hint of garlic that complemented everything beautifully—and the chef’s special garlic mashed potatoes, which were creamy, indulgent, and loaded with fresh roasted garlic flavor. That side stole the show; it was like a hug from a potato!
The staff was attentive without hovering, and the cocktail menu (I had their old-fashioned) was spot-on. If you’re in Wooster and craving steak in a unique setting, this is your spot. Historic charm meets killer food—I’ll be back soon! Highly recommend for date nights or

I have wanted to I try this place for awhile now and we finally had the chance. It was a nice place and the food was good. I ordered the Beer Battered Mushrooms for an appetizer and they were really good. My wife ordered The Big House Club it was good and the portion was abundant, the house made chips were great. I ordered the Maple Burger and as much as I wanted to love this Burger it was mediocre you really didn’t get any Maple flavor or seasoning in general the burger was definitely a frozen patty, I prefer fresh, so the burger was definitely overcooked and on the dry side. I had the fresh cut fries and they were fantastic. Overall it’s a good place and I look forward to returning and trying their Steakhouse.

In town for a race and the hotel recommended coming here for dinner. It was a fantastic recommendation! The building and the history are amazing, but the people, the service and the food made it all the better. The hostess was wonderful, our waitress did a great job, and the Chef even came out to say hello. Will 100% be coming back when in town again.

Olde Jaol Tavern serves a good burger. They have a bunch of unique options, but we chose one cajun and one maple burger. Both were very flavorful, but overcooked. The mozzarella sticks that we ordered were perfect, though. The tavern smelled like cigarette smoke and our service was a bit on the slow side. However, the price and flavor of the food will have us coming back for more.

I’ve had this place saved in my places to go to for awhile now after a coworker told me about it. Finally made it today, but just to the tavern. The place is pretty cool, and I like the concept. I went with the blue cheese burger which was amazing. The burger was cooked right, and was juicy with good flavor. Sat at the bar, the waitress was nice and friendly. While I would give the place five stars, I noticed that they need to spend a little time and money to make some improvements. The landscaping needed attention and the carpet on the stairs was filthy.

One of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time! I got the ribeye. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. The rack of lamb was very good. Had a large selection of desserts I would try next time. Went on a Thursday and had a whole to ourselves! The only note is that it is a little dusty in some corners down there.

Great atmosphere…very unique as it was a jail. See pics. Salad with homade ranch was fantastic! Ribeye steak had wonderful flavor but a bit too much fat on end….still, I loved it! Bread was pretty good. Apple pie is the BEST I’ve ever had! Wow! Do not bother with the lava cake…tasted freezer burnt….not homemade; stick with that apple pie…trust me!

Update 5/17:
Tried the tavern at Olde Jaol today & the club sandwich & onion rings were amazing! Loved the pretzel bite appetizer; cheeze & mustard dips were excellent! The service was equally amazing! Love it!

One of the COOLEST, most intimate dining experience you will ever have! The restaurant downstairs was a one of a kind experience that I highly recommend… food and drink options were excellent, huge portions and the Chef does a great job – so delicious! Our server – Rachel was outstanding, super personable and attentive. The atmosphere is the best, so intimate you feel like a celebrity but it’s NOT a stuffy country club vibe! There are TWO restaurants – downstairs is where we went but there is a separate Tavern beside it that is less intimate. There are also multiple private rooms to have your own party or gathering – so many excellent options… check them out!
