Review – Overland Express – 11/5/2025
Today our ROMEO Club decided to start something new. On the second Wednesday of every month we’re going to do a “Second Chance Wednesday.” The idea is that we’ll visit a restaurant that I haven’t been to, but that Otto has previously written off due to a bad meal or bad service or both. On his rating system, this means that he’d have them rated as a “C” or less, meaning that he’ll never go back. When I suggested the idea of a ”Second Chance Wednesday” as we sat in his driveway discussing where to go, he was definitely keen on the idea. But when I suggested starting with The Overland Express Restaurant he said, “Well, I guess one bad meal per month isn’t too bad.”

We arrived at the Overland Express Restaurant and pulled up to the Old West looking building about five minutes after they opened. Once inside, you can’t help but notice the 1880’s frontier town decor with lumber surrounding the booths like cattle stalls. Seating is primarily in these stall-style booths for a more private dining experience. There appears to be plenty of seating.

Cowboy Country music was playing softly in the background.

Kristina served as our waitress. She cheerfully greeted us and helpfully made several menu suggestions. She is clearly a very good waitress. She delivered our coffee and soda while we were still looking at the menus. She also cheerfully refilled my coffee without being asked.

Otto ended up ordering the Dragon Burger, which is a half-pound burger patty soaked in dragon sauce and topped with ham, mushrooms, onions, and Kasseri cheese. Kasseri cheese (according to Google) is a semi-hard, pale yellow cheese from Greece, traditionally made from sheep’s milk with a small amount of goat’s milk. I asked Otto about the Dragon Sauce and he said he didn’t know what it was, but he really liked it. He said it was not barbecue sauce, and it wasn’t hot, but it was very rich. Online research indicates that the Overland Express Dragon Sauce is a smoky, sweet, and spicy “drizzle over everything” sauce.

I asked about the Overland Reuben and Kristina smiled as she answered, “It’s very popular, and I’ve never had anyone say anything bad about it.” So with that recommendation, I ordered the Overland Reuben with fries. This Reuben was fairly traditional, composed of thinly sliced corned beef, seasoned sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and tomatoes, grilled on dark rye bread and served with spicy Thousand Island dressing.

The food arrived fairly quickly. I immediately noticed that the fries were encased in a crispy batter, giving them a very satisfying crunchiness, while retaining a soft interior. I felt compelled to promptly taste test a fry, dipping it in my spicy Thousand Island dressing. It didn’t disappoint.

I’ll confess that this is the first time I’ve ever had a tomato slice on a Reuben, but it works, adding a nice texture and flavor to the sandwich. The spicy Thousand Island dressing has a slight zing of horseradish. Delicious!

Part way through the meal Otto exclaimed, “This is surprisingly fantastic. I take back everything negative that I said about them.“

Prices are a little higher than your average burger joint, but the flavors definitely made up for the difference. Surprisingly, my coffee was a little less expensive than what I’ve paid at other local restaurants.

Otto stated, “I don’t know about the dragon sauce, but this was really good.” Toward the end of the meal he remarked, “My burger had a lot of mushrooms, and I’m not really big on mushrooms but these weren’t bad.“ He ate them all.

Otto and I were both thankful for our first Second Chance Wednesday. The food was great, the service was excellent, and it was an overall delightful dining experience. I’m sure that we’ll be back to sample some of the other intriguing menu options. Today, on their second chance, the Overland Express easily earned their five star review.

Seated quickly, great staff and clean tables. Water tasted like soap and my burger was drenched in grease. Burger was well cooked but tasteless, besides the grease. Steak looked good but lacked flavor. Cheese sticks were okay.

I hadn’t been in this place since I was a kid with my grandparents and my parents. I’m old, so imagine to my shock that it’s still there. We went in and had a great meal. Super amazing service. The cheese sticks when hot have the most amazing cheese pull ever. The server was top notch and dealt with our shenanigans. All all evening and was great.

I ordered the cheddar bacon burger with fries… and honestly? I think this burger just restructured my personality. The lettuce, tomato, pickles, and red onion were so perfectly crisp I’m convinced they were cut by a samurai.

It’s been two days, and I’m still thinking about that burger like it’s an ex who got away.

Service? Absolute perfection. Our server was attentive, funny, and so prompt I started to wonder if they could read minds.

The atmosphere was chill and cozy — late afternoon, not many people around, just me and my life-changing burger moment.

Would I recommend? Absolutely.
Would I fight a grizzly to eat it again? …Probably.

The biggest reason we chose to eat here is that they had a large parking lot that cold easily accommodate our truck and the trailer that we were hauling. We found the food to be just ok. I had the teriyaki burger and it just wasn’t flavorful. I’m from Nebraska (home of the Reuben) so to see tomato offered on their version was strange. Also the potato salad had black olives in it which was a first for me. I found the price to be quite expensive for the portions.

They are amazing. We needed food to go after a long day and they took the order, had a nice place to wait and got the food for a good price. And the food was tasty. Get the trail cookie. And the dragon wings!

Great and friendly service but the food sadly fall short as far as flavor and taste. We ordered the chicken wings for appetizer and it was a bit burnt for our liking. For our entree hubby and I both ordered the prime rib special which is about $26. The meat was pretty tender and cooked well, but sadly lacking in flavor. Our kids also had french fries on the side and that too was a little overdone.
A bit disappointed on this one.
