TLDR: Basically Denny’s.

MENU: Breakfast seems to be the happening thing here, especially brunch on Sundays. They have your typical breakfast fare in the morning, and diner style burgers, fried chicken, and whatnot during the day.

FOOD QUALITY: Good, but very basic. I believe most of the items are made up of factory ingredients thrown together. For example I went here for brunch with a friend recently and got the barbacoa bowl – the spuds were the frozen par-fried kind, the cheese sauce was out of a can, etc. I also had the nutella waffle, which was a frozen waffle (kinda soggy, rather than crispy) with literally a squeeze of nutella and a sliced banana. Their stuff is basic to the point that you could make most of the menu at home in less time than it takes to drive up there and wait for your order.

MENU FAVORITES: I’ve only been here twice, once for a burger (which was pretty good – I’d say a contender for the best restaurant burger in Kirksville), and once for brunch, so there’s a lot of things I haven’t tried. The stuff I did have was satisfying, and the price is fair.

MENU FAILS: N/A.

FRONT OF HOUSE SERVICE: Staff is friendly and attentive.

KITCHEN SERVICE: The food is basic, but done well. Your scrambled eggs will be cooked through but still moist. Your pancakes will be nicely browned and fluffy.

COMPETITION: The closest comparison for breakfast stuff would be Rosie’s Northtown Cafe, and Diner 54 is definitely better. For burgers and fried chicken, the closest comparison would be Maxwell’s, and I’d say they’re about the same, quality-wise.

ATMOSPHERE: The last time I went was for brunch on a Sunday and the place was PACKED! (Meaning there was a short wait, the restaurant was noisy, etc.) Otherwise, clean, comfortable, and cheery.

Great Breakfast Spot Across from Super 8!

Conveniently located right across from the Super 8—perfect for anyone visiting Truman State or staying nearby.

The staff was super friendly, and the service was quick. I ordered the two eggs over medium with hash browns and bacon, plus a half order of biscuits and gravy.

The eggs were cooked perfectly, the hash browns were crispy, and the biscuits and gravy were pretty good too. The bacon was a little chewy, but still tasty.

The single pancake that came with the meal was excellent—fluffy and flavorful.

Hot coffee kept coming, and the prices were very reasonable.

Definitely a solid breakfast choice, and I’d happily come back again. ☕

Eh
It was decent. The meals were delicious, the appetizer platter was a mixed review. The guy seating us didn’t say a word to us and just ran ahead. We were confused if we were supposed to follow, but he was just standing next to a seat waiting for us. Would have been nice to have some instructions. On the appetizers, the onion rings were by far the best thing. The potato skins had a ton of bacon, but they weren’t very warm, the cheese was a bit crusty. The cheese sticks weren’t gooey at all. The chicken tenders were very dry and could have used some sauce, but we only got marinara and sour cream. For meals, I ordered the Philly steak sandwich. It wasn’t shredded beef like normal, but it was actual steak cut into strips. Very good and fresh. Lots of onions on it. My partner got the all you can eat catfish but they didn’t even finish the first plate so we didn’t test that out. It was also very good though and came with two sides.

Absolutely terrible, from the old soggy unseasoned food to the service. Received what seemed to have sat out old food. The manager was rude and wanted to keep arguing with me, when all I wanted was for him to make things right, when I spent a good amount of money too. Then when I brought the food back for a refund after having to bargain with the manager, he had a lady come to the front. As she sees me enter with the food, I was met with her wanting to be confrontational as well. She met me saying out loud “Oh you’re the one who said your food was AWFUL” I actually never said the food was awful I said it was really bad. But yeah awful about somes up the food and experience.
We will never order or eat here again.

Easy to find and get to. Seated quickly and the place seemed clean. They got our drinks quickly, I had Pepsi and the ladies had water. I got a hamburger steak with two fried eggs over easy. The wife got an omelette with hash browns. The orders were large so it should be plenty to eat. Our waitress kept our glasses full and was very nice about taking on my glass refills. I would come back

Wow! This place was recomemded by my Mother in Law about a month ago. We’ve never been to Kirksville as we live in Seymour IA its about an hour and a half away but we came to cut down a Christmas Tree and decided to stop.
Very family ordinated (Cartoons were playing) we were seated as soon as we walked in the door they gave us plenty of time to order my husband got the all you can eat Walleye, he said it was really good and you couldn’t even tell it was fish! I got a taco salad (recommended by a lady who was coming outside as we were going inside) and our kids had some fries that were really good!
Three diffrent people asked how the food was and how we were doing I think one might have been an owner or manager (he looked very nice)
Over all the service was nice the place was very neat and tidy along with a lot of space. We will return soon!

I was visiting one of my friends in the area and was looking for restaurants to eat, and he recommended Diner 54. Well as a tourist i took his advice. Overall it was a great decision.

We started off with the Appetizer sampler. When it came out it was piping hot and delicious. It was standard American fare consisting of mozzarella sticks, onion rings, chicken strips, and potato skins.

For the main course I ordered the chicken quesadilla it was really warm, however could have used more seasoning. I placed salt seperately on it and it was still good. The fries were really crispy as well.

The strawberry crepes were good, but were very plain. It’s something you can get just about anywhere, maybe if it was stuffed with something it would have stood out a little more.

Overall the food as tasteful, well-prepared, it could have used a little bit more seasoning at times, however the fact that nearly everything was homemade made it taste better. As for the service of the waitresses was more than accommodating and really made you feel at home. Connie was a fantastic waitress and really went above and beyond. Overall i would rate this restaurant 4 stars
