We ordered three drinks, three entrées, and one dessert, and the bill came to a whopping $120. This place is definitely overpriced if you’re going there primarily for a meal. The food was okay overall and not worth the price, though the wagyu meatballs were especially delicious and definitely worth ordering.
The beers are reasonably priced and there’s a good variety to choose from, which is a plus. I also liked the ambience, it’s a nice space to hang out. However, the service was mediocre and the server was quite distracted. When we entered, no one greeted us, and we had to walk deep into the restaurant to find a server, which made for a poor first impression.
Also worth noting that the kitchen closes at 9 p.m. on weekdays. This place might be more enjoyable on weekends, but it’s not really worth visiting on a weekday.
Overall, better suited for drinks and ambience than for a full meal.

I’ve been to Alter Brewing (St. Charles) several times over the course of the past 2-3 years. I have never been disappointed.
During my visit yesterday, I ordered the Salmon Lunch Bowl. My colleagues ordered Rice Against the Machine and the Crunchy Shrimp BBQ bowl. It was $13.99 in restaurant. It was the perfect size for a lunch. Our entire group was satisfied with the service and serving size of the bowls.
In previous visits, I have fish and chips and the shrimp tacos. It was all delicious.

Solid brewery /taproom option! Great rotation of beer and the food was good. Our first brewery in this area so excited to try others and see how this one stacks up. Will be back in the summer and sit in their outdoor area on the river.

We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday for our first visit. Food was great. The spicy chicken sandwich (with a fantastic sauce) and the tacos were excellent. The beer is outstanding, I mean they have it going on here. Alter has many different styles on tap, and we enjoyed everything we sampled over the course of two flights. We bought some to go as well. They have a great location by the river, and we enjoyed talking with the friendly staff. We will definitely be back.

They must have been very short on help because we waited a long time for service when we sat down, a long time for our drinks…one girl never got her’s, and a long time for our food, and one of my friends didn’t get her’s at all so at least they comped her’s. They also screwed up all of our checks and even had to ask us what we had at the end of the dinner. Omg. We still might go again sometime because it’s nice there by the river, but never again with a large group. We also wanted a table by the river and they said they don’t have a table for a larger party by the river. But where we were sitting… outside they put tables together for all 13 of us. Not sure about that?? I made reservations quite a long time ago with the request to sit along the river for this get together, so not sure why that was something they couldn’t do. Nice area but very unorganized service.

Great venue for our rehearsal dinner! We’ve loved Alter for a long time, the food, drinks, and service are always great. The planning process was seamless and all of our guests were impressed with the delicious food. It was a fun, casual cocktail hour vibe, just like we wanted. The added patio space was amazing.

We’ve been to both Oakbrook and St. Charles locations and both places had beautiful interior and wonderful staff. Our waiter Selena made our last visit in St. Charles a wonderful experience. She was fun and attentive!
Food is okay. I would expect it to be better considering prices are so high. I paid $18 for the wettest Greek salad I’ve ever had.
I will say that their wings are fireeee but also expensive. I think those are worth it! Beer list is extensive, so might be worth a visit.

This was our second time coming from out of town in hopes to try the vegan Italian beef because we had heard such great things about it. The first time we came, they were out of the ingredients no biggie. So today we made sure to call ahead (about 10 minutes away) to make sure they had the ingredients for the Italian beef, we were told yes, okay perfect. We get seated and we order and our waitress tells us they are out of the ingredients. We let her know that we literally JUST called and we were told yes. She went back to the kitchen to ask and then came back, she told us they did have it but it would be about 10 minutes for them to prepare it before they could actually start making it, no biggie at all. Almost 45 minutes goes by and our food finally gets to our table and not only was all of it cold, but the Italian beef we had heard so many great things about, was such a disappoint. The taste was awful, and the meat substitute was genuinely slimy it was like putty between your fingers. I had the two other people at my table try it just to make sure I wasn’t crazy. They agreed. We let our waitress know and she took it off the bill which she absolutely didn’t have to do but it was nice of her to do so. Overall just a very disappointing experience, I don’t think we will be back.

Seated right away. Rsvp through OpenTable. Sat outside with river view. Food was good, service was good, our waters weren’t refilled and it was hot out. The Fillet Trio, was really 1 steak sliced into 3 very thin slices. The Old Fashioned drinks are a 5 here.

Eating off the Fox River was wonderful and scenic! Alter has great food and the server, Roberto went above and beyond being one of the best servers I have had in a long time!
