Today I found out it actually exists. Upon looking up the menu in advance I discovered this place still is cash only and made a stop ahead.
I decided to order the #1 in hopes that it would serve me well.
After standing at the food truck-esk window and observing the flies covering the menu, I ordered.
Moments later, my food was passed through a different window by a hidden torso.
I sat at the nearby benches questioning my decisions before revealing what I committed to my intestines.
A cube of fish and 4 very misshaped “shrimp” lay upon a bed of fries and 2 little cups of red.
Upon the first bite of my perfectly cubed fish, I have flashbacks to my youth of hearing food with a microwave. Bland, flavorless, unseasoned, I dip into the red mystery, and another bite…the same only now with the crushed dreams of some ketchup that never was.
The novel rests the same with my mystery shrimps, same bland, weird cuts almost as if they were deep fried while doing gymnastics!
Once my stomach began to beg for mercy as I stomached the rest I began to understand as I walked away with my cup of ice that happens to contain liquid, I discover the meaning of the bumper sticker.
It was never meant to showcase perfectly seasoned fish or delectable shrimp, nor the 2 oz of liquid you get with your 30 oz of ice nay, the sticker serves as a title…a title that one has visited, stomached, and conquered the Fish and Chips of Pete.
Fries were ok too
I researched Pete’s Fish and Chips before showing up. They are as proud of this establishment as El Paso is proud to call Chico’s Tacos their own. I knew in advance you have to eat outside at a picnic table and that you are to eat with your hands. No plastic ware is provided. It is cash only. I ordered the #2 special (2 fish, 7 shrimp, fries and a 32 oz. Drink. I paid an upcharge for substituting onion rings for fries. I asked for a magnet souvenir and the girl asked “nuts or no nuts?” I told her a magnet like you stick on a refrigerator, not a brownie. It took 3 tries to get the magnet. It was free. Although it took a while for the order, it was hot and fresh. I expected some tartar sauce but instead received 3 cocktail sauces. It worked. The fish were small and square, like McDonald’s. The shrimp were a breaded strip that contained small shrimp. The printed hype didn’t match reality. San Antonio easily has better chain establishments, like J. Anthony’s or Sea Island. I was greatly disappointed.
Been hearing folks talk about this place for the last few years that I’ve been here so I’ve finally decided to check it out. I definitely wouldn’t try the fish again. I’m from the East coast so I just knew it was gonna be some bomb fish since everyone eats here…no bueno!
I think McDonald’s fake-fil-a taste better than their fish patty thing. Everything had tons of salt on it, I think that’s the only seasoning that’s used is salt and it was a lot! I was happy that they have icees, I think I’ll go back for that lol.
The pricing on the menu definitely doesn’t match the pricing on the receipt, so they definitely need to update their board to display proper prices for their food.
I have two stars for the blueberry Icee
