Unfortunately, the service is what ruined the experience. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated after our reservation time, which we didn’t mind at all. The front desk staff were polite and welcoming.
However, our server (MBZ Z) was unexpectedly rude from the moment we sat down. She seemed irritated, kept sighing, and was very impatient with us. None of us had been to this restaurant before, and we were simply trying to understand the menu and enjoy the celebration. The way she spoke to us — especially to the birthday celebrant — came across as condescending and unkind. A little patience and a more respectful tone would have made a big difference.
We truly hope management addresses this, because the food and the rest of the staff left a good impression — but the service we received did not reflect the kind of hospitality we expected.
The service here is also great along with the atmosphere. We have come here twice this month and have been lucky enough the have the server Eric both times. He is super knowledgeable and fun to talk too. He worked his way up through the kitchen and knows all of the in’s and outs of the food here. He also knows his wine.
If you come here and he is available you MUST request him. He makes the experience so much better!
The salmon was amazing. Perfectly broiled with a lovely creamy butter sauce!
The loaded focaccia was a table favorite as well as the stracciatella!
Loved everything about our dinner!
It was a little excessive. All the other drinks were fair in my opinion. The food was absolutely phenomenal. The appetizers were large and super flavorful (we got a calamari app that isn’t pictured because I had to dig in) and well priced. My wife got a lamb pasta that was like a hearty stew with thick noodles that was mouthwatering, but my steak stole the show. The steak was perfectly cooked 10/10 and the small amount of balsamic reduction mixed with the herb butter set it off. The crispy potatoes, which weren’t actually that crispy, were SO good. Idk what the flavor was that I was tasting, but I’m here for it. All in all I would definitely recommend Martini and we will be coming back.
When we politely asked for a little more time to decide, she acted visibly annoyed and impatient. While ordering, she talked down to me as if I didn’t know what I was ordering, even after I explained I had been there before. One of my friend’s drinks wasn’t brought out until after dessert was already ordered, which was annoying.
We did nothing to warrant this treatment. We were simply enjoying ourselves and taking photos, and it felt like we were treated poorly for no reason. The food and restaurant itself are great, but this level of service needs to be addressed. I really hope management looks into this.
Pulling up, I was instantly relieved to see valet service waiting right out front. It’s a small touch, but one that sets the tone, no circling the block, no stress, just straight into the experience.
Inside, the restaurant hums with energy. The remodel has given it a sleek, modern edge without losing its warmth. There’s a lively buzz from the crowd, a low thump of music in the background, and the unmistakable feeling that this is where people come to kick off their night.
I started with the Hugo by Proxy, a light, refreshing cocktail featuring Giffard Aperitif, elderflower, and alcohol-removed sparkling wine. Bright, slightly floral, and crisp, it set the mood perfectly.
The Martini Salad was a pleasant surprise. Expecting delicate ribbons of prosciutto, I instead found what I can only describe as “Italian bacon bits,” crumbled prosciutto scattered among greens, tomatoes, pine nuts, and tangy gorgonzola. The balsamic tied everything together, but it was that salty, meaty crunch that made the salad memorable.
For the main course, the Lasagna leaned classic but executed with finesse, layers of fresh pasta, robust sausage, and San Marzano tomato sauce that tasted slow-simmered and balanced, not too acidic or heavy. Comfort food elevated.
To finish, a scoop of Vanilla Bean Gelato alongside a foamy cappuccino, simple, timeless, and the perfect close.
Service from Leeann was standout, warm, attentive, and genuine, which only elevated the evening. Martini strikes a rare balance, polished enough for a celebration, but comfortable enough for a casual night out.
With its history dating back to 1996 and its recent refresh under Executive Chef John Paul Iacobucci, Martini Modern Italian feels both rooted and forward-looking. It’s no wonder it continues to be a Short North staple. If you’re making a dining circuit through Columbus, this spot deserves a top slot.
