I’ve never taken grocery store sushi seriously. Those sushi boxes in transparent plastic containers always seemed just marginally better than a cold, sad sandwich. And let’s face it, eating a tasteless, flimsy sandwich feels downright pathetic. A box of oddly assembled sushi rolls feels like just one step up from that—cold, sticky rice balls topped with strange, less-than-fresh ingredients.

That said, I do love good, authentic sushi—the kind with a perfect piece of raw fish atop a bed of seasoned rice. I’m not here to criticize freshly made rolls either, especially since California has its own unique spin. I’ve even spent time investigating the origin of the California Roll.

But this box from Zenshi changed my opinion entirely. It was good. The rice was fluffy and well-balanced with sushi vinegar. I tried the Zynamite Roll—basically a fried prawn roll (though the name is quite odd). The prawn was fresh, fried to a crisp but not overly hard or dry, and full of flavor. I also tried the Crunchy California Roll, which, of course, featured avocado. Freshness is always a win, and these rolls didn’t disappoint.

This particular sushi counter was at the VONS on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. From what I found on Google Maps, Zenshi has multiple locations, mostly in grocery stores. The sushi isn’t pre-made and delivered—it’s handcrafted on-site. Their branded soy sauce packets, not surprisingly, are Kikkoman.

In the end, Zenshi’s sushi was surprisingly good—worth trying if you’re already at the grocery store. But would I go out of my way just to buy it? Probably not.
