The dining room has a timeless, traditional feel that incorporates elegance into an atmosphere that is still relaxing and comfortable. Our servers were attentive, engaging, and fun. This restaurant has been on my bucket list for nearly 10 years, and it was well worth the wait. Looking forward to another visit.
Notable duds include: starting crostinis (stale and oily) and the lamb prosciutto chopped salad which was underdressed and equivalent to what you might find at an Applebees.
Red fish and Pecan crusted mystery fish (they don’t specify the type) were aggressively mediocre. Turtle soup wasn’t my cup of tea, but it at least had some flavor other than salt. Bread pudding was the best thing we ate, although it was a bit sweet for my taste.
Overall, the food reminded me of a Hilton wedding buffet. Mediocre – and certainly not matching their want to be upscale vibe. I’m also not sure their glassware is real – almost thought it was plastic at first. The cutlery wasn’t the quality you’d expect either.
The one redeeming light was the service – everyone we encountered was professional and friendly. Although I was surprised they didn’t clean the table between courses.
If you want to go somewhere fancy and food taste is not a priority, this is an option. But there is certainly better food in New Orleans, especially at this price point.
We started off with their 25¢ martinis and were surprised by how well-made they were! We sampled the range of varieties they have and all agreed that the best was still the dirty gin martini.
I liked that the menu was all on one page. No endless scrolling through pages and pages. They’re famous for their turtle soup so of course we had to try it. It was very delicately prepared. It did NOT have parts of turtle floating around in it, as we imagined!
Some of us had the beef cheeks (so tender!), the others had the cochon dish (highly elevated carnitas taco), my favorite was the chicken leg confit which was an explosion of flavor! Don’t skip the desserts too!
From the moment you walk in, the service sets the tone. The entry desk staff are welcoming, polished, and genuinely warm. We were seated immediately, and one of the most memorable touches happened right away , we were guided through the kitchen on the way to our table. Watching the team in action added a special behind-the-scenes charm that I’ve never experienced at a restaurant before. Even the doors are thoughtfully marked “Yes” and “No” depending on which side you should use , a small detail, but very memorable.
Our drink server, Simba, truly made the evening special. We were celebrating our son’s birthday, and he made sure the night felt personal and joyful from start to finish. Our son received a kids’ mocktail with a little duck decoration , pink, fun, and absolutely adorable. I enjoyed a glass of Prosecco while we settled in.
We started with the chicken and sausage gumbo and the famous turtle soup — both rich, comforting, and full of classic Creole flavor. One of the coolest parts of the dining experience is how the food is served: three staff members arrive together and place the dishes on the table in perfect synchronization. It feels theatrical in the best possible way.
For the main course, I had the pecan-crusted fish, which was delicious and perfectly prepared. My wife ordered the short-rib ravioli, which was equally impressive , flavorful, comforting, and beautifully presented.
The birthday celebration was another highlight. The team brought out a chef’s hat and ice cream for our son, making him feel like the star of the evening. Moments like that are what make a restaurant truly memorable.
The ambiance feels classic and timeless. The dining room had a relaxed, elegant crowd , families celebrating together, couples enjoying dinner, and even grandparents with grandkids. It felt like dining inside a New Orleans institution, which Commander’s clearly is.
Even the staff outside, who greeted us when our Uber dropped us off, knew exactly where to position us for photos so the iconic Commander’s sign appeared perfectly in the background. That level of care says everything about the place.
With thousands of reviews, Commander’s Palace absolutely lives up to its reputation. The service is exceptional, the food is wonderful, and the experience feels legendary from beginning to end.
If you’re visiting New Orleans, make the reservation. Commander’s Palace is not just dinner , it’s an experience you’ll remember
I couldn’t have alcohol during the time of visit and so I was pleased to find out they had alternatives/accommodations for the whiskey cream of the bread pudding and we just opted to not add the splash of sherry to the turtle soup.
It was a great dining experience although I’d have to say the highlight of my visit were the desserts. I found the fish a little too salty for my liking (pecan was nicely done however) and the gumbo was decent but not too unique to this place. I wasn’t able to take photos but they have delicious table garlic bread, and the soup came with a mini light baguette that was such a delightful pair to the soup.
