Me and hubby go here often. The staff provides great service every time. We love the maguey dip and street tacos. Definitely the best place to eat in southern Indiana in our opinion. Special thanks to Sammi for being the best waitress.

Excellent food! Easily the best Mexican food I’ve had in the area! Even the kids loved it. It was actually my 12 year old that complimented the flavor of the chicken and cheese and compared it to other Mexican restaurants. My youngest really enjoyed his chicken tenders and he is picky. Well worth the money. The atmosphere is unique as well. Beautifully decorated and original.

I used to go here 4-5 days a week but the owner got rid of the old bartender and got a new one. The new one is absolutely rude no personality and can’t make a drink at all. So Istarted going 3 days week and after last night I doubt I’ll ever go again. I got there a little after 8pm and the staff at 945 started cleaning moving booths sweeping by 1015 they were stacking chair. Mind you I/we were still eating and still had our drinks. There were three services that told me/us we didn’t have to leave take our time that they didn’t close till 10:30 but we did not feel welcome and we felt rushed. Food is great but definitely going down hill with the new bartender and atmosphere

I have been to this place many times beginning in October 2019 and during the summer of 2020. My friends and I visit here on Tuesdays typically and we LOVE the rooftop dining terrace here at El Maguey Mexican Restaurant in Salem Indiana. Sometimes I space out on cloud nine at sunset and dusk because the atmosphere is so enjoyable. The owner is so passionate about creating a relaxing atmosphere and pleasant hospitality experience for her customers.

The decor and design of this restaurant are an ongoing evolution but it keeps getting better because the passion the owner has to communicate to her customers that she cares about their experience as they visit her restaurant.

If you visit this place as often as I do, you’ll notice that even the building itself has a soothing personality that it radiates. It gets so cozy there on the rooftop dining terrace and I love it at sunset and especially at dusk.

This past Saturday 5/14 late afternoon entering the restaurant with a baseball team waiting to be seated. I tried to put our name in several times to be put on a list if they were taking names. The manager/maybe owner took his hands to wave me on (like dismissing me or language barrier) several times, ugh. A waitress that I witnessed several times try to take care of every table on her own, noticed us and apologized then seated us. 20min later finally the same waitress noticed we haven’t been waited on yet. During this time waiting I noticed again the owner or manager yelling at this waitress that she needed to pay for several people’s drinks/food from people leaving while waiting on their food. People were tired of waiting on service and food so bailed. This is not the waitress’s fault. Yes, it crossed our minds to leave too but I was worried for this waitress. All restaurants have a bad day and the way the world is right now being short-staffed is everywhere. We need to have more patience but last year we had perfect food and service in the outside seating on the roof. With a whole baseball team coming into the restaurant I believe they panicked. Everything was concentrated on that. Then I noticed this baseball team haven’t received their drinks nor food 40min in. I know the food is good here and came a long way away to eat here. Our food was cold when we received it but didn’t complain to our waitress or the food runner we saw starting to help. Our Biggest complaint here is to keep your great staff that you have on hand and don’t yell at them or tell them they have to pay for food/drinks when customers decided to leave from waiting too long. Microwave worked great to heat it back up at home.
After reading the other reviews it is not the owner that was rude to us maybe management staff. Who knows! I appreciate reading the owner replying to most of the reviews that Raquel gives generic replys with no true resolution to the customer’s problem. We paid way too much for quality of food and no waiter/waitress needs to be treated like that. Maybe when things are going so bad. It wouldn’t hurt to shut the doors and call it A-day to regroup.

We stopped in for dinner after a day visiting local antique stores. The service was fast, the food was hot and the outdoor seating was exactly what we needed after a long day of shopping. We recommend if you’re in the area looking for excellent food and friendly staff. (We ordered 3 street tacos and the Maguey Burrito, pictured below).

This was a great place for some Mexican style food on the square in Salem, Indiana. The chips and salsa was outstanding. The entrees were great as well. The restaurant was very clean and uniquely decorated. The staff here were all great with prompt courteous service. There was plenty of parking available on the street and is free.

First was set at a table with ants crawling on it. Then I paid $18 plus tax for 3 incredibly small “street tacos” that had hardly any meat on them at all. There was no rice and beans included and it was not worth the cost at all. I was very displeased with the entire experience. I won’t be back, and will furthermore tell others I know to avoid it as well.

Good use of spices! The smell as the food was coming out to the table was delectable. The flavor of shrimp and peppers with a really good seasoning blend

I thought the seating was comfortable – flat, even base with stiff cushion – although the cushion is not affixed. But that was OK for us. It slides, so if you have balance issues, maybe request a stationary seat.

Music on the overhead speakers was fun! The Olympics were on and people were watching the TVs and enjoying the atmosphere. I don’t know what they have on TV when it’s not the Olympics season. Sports would be my guess.

Lots of servers visible at all times. Several standing by the opening to the kitchen watching the clientele. Like they were available if anyone was looking for someone. Servers all clean and happy looking.

Prices>> a plate of 4 tamales with side of shrimp and peppers was less than $20. A big burrito (forgot its name) was between $15-20. Drinks were served in a GREAT BIG cup! Not spending all day waiting for refills.
