Always love the beautiful Christmas decorations at The Jefferson Hotel and have been coming here for years to view the decor and enjoy holiday lunch with friends. Months ago, made a reservation for lunch at TJs. Our group was seated near the coat closet and the area was very cold. (It felt like the air conditioning was on.) When we asked to be seated elsewhere, the response was the empty tables were reserved. (No one was seated at the empty tables during the two hours we were there.) Also, the food was not up to the usual Jefferson standards. Several people in our group ordered oysters. The fried oysters were served warm, not hot, and the breading overpowered the oysters. The oyster sandwich consisted of 5 or 6 oysters served on a large sub roll. The hotel has always had delicious french fries but this year no french fries; curly fries only. (Not as tasty as the curly fries at Arby’s.) Our server was excellent – very pleasant, polite, and efficient. Overall, the best part of our lunch was the Christmas decorations.

Went for lunch over the Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately their famous Christmas decorations were not yet complete but the place looked lovely anyway.
My friend and I ate at TJs for lunch. Though the main restaurant was full, at TJ’s we had our choice of rooms – the charming and warm bar room or the more utilitarian cafeteria-like room, and of seats – bar or table. We chose a table in the bar and enjoyed that atmosphere.
The food was overall disappointing. My friend tried the peanut soup out of curiosity and said the only flavor was peanut. We expected something more elevated than liquid peanut butter. I had the chicken salad croissant and fruit. The sandwich was good, but the fruit was the very unimaginative combo of melons and grapes. The melon did not seem fresh.
The staff was friendly and competent.
Next time I’ll plan ahead and get a reservation in the main restaurant.

TJ’s is awesome – we went here for breakfast twice during our hotel stay. The food is phenomenal and the service truly outstanding. The inside area feels a bit dark as there isn’t a lot of windows, but it probably adds to the charm. The one complaint I had was that the chef was stingy on the yogurt & granola bowl. The fruit and granola were delicious but there was barely any yogurt in the dish, and for $14 I would expect to get more value. The second day I got the same thing but asked for extra yogurt and it was the perfect amount. I was happy I didn’t get charged for asking for extra yogurt as well.

Dinner for 9 at Christmas time. Service and staff at TJs were very good. Of course the ballroom at the Jefferson is beautiful. The food…oh my, that is where the wheels came off. A mere Four dinner selections, that’s it. Several us had the “Hanger steak” which as a steak was ok, but it was 6 ounces maybe. No choice of vegetables or sides – you get what you get. The mashed potatoes were very strange in a bad way. None of us ate more than one bite. They were weirdly sweet and runny, like they used French vanilla coffee creamer instead of milk. The spinach was meh. Others had shrimp and grits and only ate the shrimp as the grits were seemingly there for decoration as they chose not to eat them. We cut our losses and elected to not have dessert.
We also noted the restaurant was mostly empty, now we know why.

I’ve always loved this particular hotel during the holidays for their decorations and decided to eat lunch here. Stick to taking pictures because the food doesn’t taste as good as it looks. My wife and I ordered the catfish sandwich that was served with old tomatoes and cold slaw that was missing the mayo. The catfish strips should have been a filet. This came with a side of old brown fruit and a glass of warm water. I ordered the porabelo cheese steak with steak added for an extra $5. Make it make sense. The mushroom slices were bigger than the steak portion. Also served with warm water. I guess the gnats that were flying around needed somewhere to stay after we shared our lunch with them. This particular day the food was not worth the money. I highly recommend eating elsewhere for lunch. A 10 out of 10 mistake.

Wife and I had lunch. She had peanut soup, not as warm as she’d like. Then chicken salad on a croissant with a side of fruit. She described it as average. Three star. I had the burger which The Jefferson always does well. Cornbread to start was very heavy. Overall, four star average for food. We’d go back next time we’re staying at The Jefferson Hotel.

I visited TJ’s at The Jefferson Hotel expecting a fine-dining experience, but the visit fell short from the moment I sat down. The tablecloth was noticeably dirty, and my napkin had visible stains. My beverage arrived with pomegranate juice on the bases of the glass, and therefore left pomegranate rings on the white tablecloth when it was set placed on the table.
Although my server remained polite, he was clearly overwhelmed—he was managing a large party nearby, which affected attentiveness and overall service quality. I don’t fault him for doing his best, but it was evident he needed more support.
I ordered the Black & Blue Salad, but the steak was so tough and chewy that I couldn’t enjoy it. I ultimately left the entire salad on the table and didn’t even ask for a box. What struck me most was that the server made no acknowledgment of the fact that I hadn’t eaten any of it, which is surprising for a restaurant marketed as fine dining.
Between the presentation issues, lack of attention to detail, and disappointing food quality, this experience did not reflect the standard I expected from The Jefferson. Unfortunately, I would not return

Yesterday I had the most delicious and generous portion of lobster (on a roll) I’ve had yet in Richmond! 10/10 I’ll be back to order it again. The atmosphere of the lounge is unbeatable and the perfect place for a business lunch or casual get together. My server Jacob took was friendly and informative and took great care of me. Can’t wait to come back!

Awwwh, she’s starting to show her age. In the past, walking through the doors brought a luxurious, unmistakable scent—last week it was old and musty, which was disappointing. Dining has also shifted: Lemaire now serves dinner upstairs while TJ’s handles lunch downstairs. The service was excellent—easy Open Table reservations, promptly seated by a window as requested, with very comfortable high-back chairs. For lunch, I had shrimp and corn soup with Acqua Panna, while my guest enjoyed chicken salad, fries, and water. The food was good, and the building’s rich history alone makes the visit worthwhile. Beyond dining, there’s a gift shop, plus a salon and spa I hadn’t known about. Despite the signs of age, it remains a Richmond staple you really can’t go wrong visiting.

Food was pretty great, though not amazing. The service was impeccable though, making the experience as a whole all the better. The place itself looks very nice. Overall, TJ’s is a solid joint for a nice meal.
