Great little place to eat! Very nice staff and good food. The bathroom is always clean. We have had a breakfast, lunch, and dinner at derby. Great each time. We will be going back soon. The wait staff took time to tell us the history of the derby and the family’s 3rd generation who own and still operate it. I love that most places to sit are booths.

This was our first time eating here. Several of our friends have eaten here many times and have recommended Derby Restaurant. We enjoyed our meal. We both had the Fried chicken. I added fried squash, pinto beans and Mac and cheese. My husband added green beans, mashed potatoes and fried okra..

We arrived around 3 pm on Saturday afternoon. For that time of day, the restaurant had good number of customers, at least 50% occupied.
The walls were adorned with a variety of mounted fish.
Home cooking! Food was good. Ordered “all you can eat” salt and peppered catfish. Plate came with to large pieces of fish, two sides and hush puppies.
Catfish was lightly battered and delicious. Waitress asked if we’d like more catfish… we had to say “no”. My partner finished his plate. My fish was so big that I was only able to eat one piece!
Service was good, and prices were more than reasonable.
I highly recommend The Derby Restaurant.

The vegetables i ordered today march 4 2026 were delicious. I have not eaten st the Derby in over 20 years. The cabbage Pinto’s and potato salad was great. Little hush puppys were good in my pintos and cabbage.Food was definitely homemade and fresh. I will order from there again

My daughter and I and 2 kids went to enjoy supper waiter was amazing the young gentleman was very polite and respectful.. when we received our food my daughter’s 2-year-old got served cold hot dogs. The Salisbury steak plate that I received was cold the only thing warm that was on it was the potatoes.. we had to wait till everybody had already eaten their plates to receive our Texas toast. Was highly disappointed and had to pay over $50 truly was not even worth $10! Truly need to make sure the food is tinting out at the safe temperature that it’s supposed to with the safe serve temperatures.

The Derby is an institution in Mt. Airy, but I’ve only started coming here in the last year as my travels bring me to the area weekly. I haven’t explored the menu as well as one might like because the lunch specials here (particularly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays) absolutely rule. My go-tos here (on Tuesday) are the baked ham (the best ever) and three vegetables, or the chopped steak with choice of potato and salad (I substitute a vegetable) with Texas toast, and on Wednesdays, they have an all-you-can-eat fried Flounder special that absolutely rocks. If you love fried fish, you’ll love it, and it’s the same breading that they use for their award-winning fried chicken, which is also good – but you have to allow for twenty minutes prep time – so if you’re in a hurry, order the fish. Also, they have a wide array of sides available, I usually get the pickled beets, and the fried squash is dynamite along with the fried okra. I also love the macaroni with tomatoes, and last but not least, the macaroni and cheese.

What’s more, the service is usually good even when it’s busy, and the prices just can’t be beat.

Me and my 4 year old daughter went for breakfast while out running errands.I got to say it was so nice. We loved the vibe and seating. Our waitress was super sweet. She had biscuits and gravy and about ate the plate she loved it so much. I got French Toast and sausage links with home fries. I wasn’t a fan of the taters they was too big of chunks for me. When we went to pay all the waitress would talk to my daughter and where so nice. The best part it feels like a small town in there, no one was a stranger and all so happy and pleasant. Definitely will be back

Ordered side salad and was given this…clearly rotten and tbh I’m disappointed cause there’s literally a produce store behind the building. I’m just gonna order from a different spot from now on this is a joke can’t even get a dang side salad without something going wrong thanks derby. On another note i just realized they put my food in a melted box too. Glad I didn’t get a drink to go tbh

Ate our food so quickly, I forgot to take photos! The food was delicious. We had the country ham, fried chicken, and the white beans were tasty.
