As one of the most famous restaurants in Dorchester, the “Boston Little Saigon”, of course it would serve authentic and affordable Vietnamese cuisine attractive to both local immigrants and Cantonese in the Chinatown nearby.

Phở Ðặc Biệt: It felt great to escape from super sweet MSG broth in those American-Vietnamese pho places. The broth was authentic, more on the savory and umami side, with the strong fragrance of Thai basil; the flat rice noodles were smooth yet bouncy. However, the beef was somehow overcooked and tough. Another suggestion is to change a bigger bowl that all ingredients can easily go in and contribute the flavor, while the bean sprouts can soak heat from the soup to remove their herby taste.

Nha Trang Rolls: The most al dente, and first ham rice paper rolls I have ever had. You shall know directly from the picture that how thin, transparent and smooth the skin was. The Vietnamese grilled ham was tender and full of smoky and meaty fragrance, while greens and herbs inside removed the greasiness. What most surprising was the Nem Nướng sauce, reputedly made mainly by fermented soybeans, peanuts, garlics, fish sauce and shrimp paste, and even pork or livers in some versions. Its texture was warm, thick and smooth, with some diced sun-dried shrimps inside, and the flavor was extremely rich and umami, somehow similar to the combination of abalone sauce鮑汁 and XO sauce in Canton. As a Cantonese, I couldn’t help to scoop out and drink all the sauce after finishing the rolls. Instead of the common ones with shrimps and sweet-spicy dipping sauce, this dish really broadened my horizon on Vietnamese rice rolls.

I really appreciate this experience and my coincidental wander into Dorchester.

Good pho and spring rolls. Large menu. Service was great. Some of us arrived very early and the rest of our party was very late but the restaurant kindly seated us regardless, even though it was a busy night.

I order a pick up order; hot and sour soup / cảnh chua and a side of white rice. The cost? $45usd I walked into the restaurant and there was one guy cleaning tables that greeted me and sent me to the front host area. As I stood there, I notice the table to the left by the washrooms; 4 people sitting there playing a card game while gambling with actual real money. They made me wait for a couple of minutes. The guy gave me my food and walked right back to the table to gamble some more while I signed my receipt. No thank you for the purchase, no good bye, no nothing. Just went back to gambling. Food was horrible, was suppose to be hot and sour; but all I tasted was sweetness. Horrible experience since the last time I went 3 years ago, and now I remember why.

We ordered bánh bột lọc and bún mắm. The bánh bột lọc was lovely and yummy. The bún mắm however didn’t have a strong scent and taste of mắm to me. Everything else in the bowl was supposed to be there (except the celery). If you don’t like too much of the mắm flavor, it would be a good dish to order to try out. Overall good restaurant atmosphere and service.

I just called this place because I wanted to enjoy a nice pho. It was 9:25pm and I asked the guy if they were still taking dine-in, he said no. That only take outs. Why would you have your schedule on google saying that you guys close at 10pm? Makes no sense. Some restaurants staff be lying so that they don’t stay working until late 🙂

The lotus root salad was fresh and nicely presented. It had a pleasant sweet and sour flavor, and there was some meat included, but the portion was quite small for the price of $14.50. I was expecting either more meat or a more generous serving. Service was okay, and the restaurant was clean and comfortable. Overall, it was an average experience. It’s not bad, but not memorable either.

This is another Vietnamese restaurant that my friends and I enjoy going to. Their grilled pork has a nice smoky flavor, the meat is tender, and the vegetables and other ingredients are fresh.
