I ordered an old fashioned, a beer on draft, the steak & fries, and a cookie sandwich. The old fashioned was ok, I really enjoyed the beer & think I’d stick to trying more of their draft beers. The steak & fries was just ok, considering the price point I wished the steak would’ve been higher quality as there were pieces almost entirely of fat. The chimichurri was excellent! I think I could’ve skipped the cookie sandwich as it was extremely sweet especially the filling. I’d probably just try a cookie or bread pudding next time.
Regarding service it was a little funky as one person sat me and helped me initially, a separate person served my food, then another person took care of me towards the end so it was hard to keep up with who my actual wait staff was. All of the staff were friendly and helpful.
Over the years we’ve enjoyed the duck fried rice but have discovered the past two times it just doesn’t live up to the hype anymore – idk changed recipe? New chef? Now we don’t get that, it’s usually greasy and tastes off.. other options on the menu are relatively solid and they always have fresh offerings.
The atmosphere is a little different, you order at the counter then sit down. We had multiple people from the staff helping us during our short visit. Everyone is always nice. This is a Maplewood classic, don’t skip it!
Tots were a side and the inhiuse ketchup needs to come i. A bigger jar it’s that good. We will be returning to try out dinner soon.
I was here for brunch with a group of Yelp friends, the wife and Kid 2. Pretty much everyone at the table ordered a benedict of one sort or another and I just couldn’t pass up the idea of the fried chicken benedict. Kid 1 considers herself a purist when it comes to benedicts and will only eat a traditional eggs benedict. If I followed that train of thought I would have missed out on one of the best brunch dishes I’ve had in years.
They have a variety of benedicts on the menu but not a traditional one. I was stuck between the idea of the house special which substituted duck for Canadian bacon and the fried chicken. Given that it was my usual lunch time and the spicy bloody mary I ordered had gone down smooth I decided to go a bit less traditional. What is brunch, after all, but a combination of breakfast and lunch. In this context, fried chicken atop a bread product with an egg and a sauce above made perfect sense.
From the bottom up: toasted english muffin, fried chicken (boneless) breast, poached egg that I think was fried a little too, smack-yo-mama good hollandaise sauce and then a sprinkling of capers.
Yes, it was a bit hard to manage to get everything onto the fork for each bite. Yes, the eggs were cooked a little over where they usually are for a benedict. Yes, the chicken was a bit darker from the fryer than expected. Yes, the hollandaise was a liberal interpretation of what is usually an elegantly simple concoction that requires just a few ingredients but a fair amount of skill to prepare properly. All of these were reasons why I could have liked it less. None of them mattered.
The dish just worked!
