New Krungthai Restaurant has been pleasing the palates of San Jose and the Bay Area since 1999. The owner, Prapa Siripakdi, with the experience from her own family’s restaurant in Thailand, brought over her family recipes and started a small, casual dining Thai restaurant on West San Carlos Shopping Mall and later moved to the new location, close to Westfield Shopping Center on Winchester Boulevard.
Traditional dishes from all over Thailand draw a bustling crowd to this understated spot.

Drunken noodles and massaman curry were really good with good enough portion size. Loved the dessert as well.
We went around 1 pm (peak hours on a Sunday) but didn’t have to wait long. Within 5 minutes, we got the table.
Highly recommend!
Thai basil fried rice was very nice. Vegetarian Panang curry was ok. Had a fishy taste imo.
The highlight was fried banana with ice cream. Absolutely delicious.
The atmosphere shifts noticeably during peak hours, and that’s where the restaurant struggles to keep up with its own ambitions. The dining room becomes crowded, the noise level rises, and the calm energy from earlier in the day fades. Staff do their best, but the quick turnover and aggressive tip prompts make the service feel more hurried than attentive. Accessibility is workable thanks to a flat entrance and mostly open layout, but maneuvering becomes difficult once the tables fill. The vegetarian menu remains a highlight, offering a range of dishes that feel intentional rather than obligatory. Kids fit in fine, and the menu has enough variety to satisfy a group without much debate. Still, the overall experience feels uneven, and the gap between the restaurant’s appearance and its actual performance becomes hard to ignore. On slower nights, the charm comes through more clearly, but on busy evenings, the flaws stand out. New Krungthai is still a decent option with flavorful dishes, yet it doesn’t consistently deliver the elevated experience its setting promises.
We started with the Papaya Salad – fresh, tangy, and perfectly spicy. It really woke up the taste buds.
The Crab Fried Rice was flavorful and had a generous amount of real crab – not dry or oily, just right.
Their Red Curry was rich, creamy, and full of comforting flavors. I could honestly drink that curry!
And of course, we couldn’t skip dessert – the Mango Sticky Rice was soft, sweet, and paired so well with the warm coconut cream.
Such a satisfying Thai meal – definitely going back again!
Foods always being served with a right temperature and flavorful taste. The price is not cheap but reasonable with their quality; and you can see the portion is big. Also one thing I love in here is they are taking their spicy level seriously. If you want mild, it will be mild, if you want spicy, you are gonna sweat. Other places seem like they just want to throw their spices in there.
Highly recommended for family and friend to hang out and enjoy the party of flavor in here.
Came here for lunch and it did not disappoint! The papaya salad was delicious and SPICY. The red and green thai curries were well flavored. The basil fried rice was tasty. The spring rolls were great!
The Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee were also well made. The service was okay but the food fas exceeds the care of good service.
I’d come back here without hesitation!
It’s one of my favorite restaurants in this area and it’s really crowded.
This place has been around for decades. It’s a very noisy environment.
Food wise, you’ll find classic Thai dishes although I don’t remember seeing spicy catfish.
