JL’s Barbeque in Pryor, Oklahoma – Reviews and Experiences

Pros: fresh, hot, fast, good portion, good location, tasty. The ribs were so so so so tender. The chicken was moist even tho it was white meat.

This bbq place has been a local staple for 20+ years. They changed hands over the past year or so and it’s still delicious. Huge portions so consider sharing. Ribs fall off the bone, fried chicken is super crunchy, and you can and should dip everything in their bbq sauce, mild or hot. It may not be good for you, but it’s quite the treat for a savory and memorable meal.

First time here. Lots of choices on the menu, including beef, brisket, ribs, hot links, chicken and more. Plenty of sides too, I liked their sweet coleslaw and fried okra. A regular meal was too much food for me so I ordered a kids size plate and it was plenty of food. Great brisket and heard the chicken fingers were yummy also. There were 10 of us and everyone liked what they ordered, no complaints. There are plenty of tables for seating. Good food! Will be back for more.

This bbq is the best ever. The baked beans are the bomb with brisket in them. The breaded potatoes, how do they freaking get it to stick??? Anyway, completely awesome and we will always love it above any others!!!! Xoxo

Amazing as always. Love the crew! Plus their one off sauces are on point.
Oscar and the cooks throw steaks on the grill Thursdays and it’s local beef!

Please don’t think all Oklahoma BBQ is like JL’s.
This is my second try of JL’s BBQ. I decided to give it one more shot. My first review got pulled from Tripadvisor. I must have been too harsh?
They offer a dinner menu and a lunch menu. The difference (other than the cost) is the number of sides and the number of meat items. On the dinner menu they seem to be very generous with the sides.
My wife had the chicken strip lunch with fried okra. It was good. The chicken had a nice crisp coating and the fried okra was good.
I had the two meat dinner. I chose the beef and the polish sausage with potato wedges and okra. The beef is different than anything I have ever had in any BBQ restaurant. It is more like roast with a hint of smoke and cut with the grain of the beef, unlike what you would typically see with a good cut of brisket. It was lean, moist and tender, but unusual. Not what you would expect to get in a BBQ restaurant. The sausage was okay. The portions of the meat were fair, but this was a little pricey per plate. Under the meat was a massive amount of potato wedges. Also they pile on a double fist full of fried okra. There had to be three pounds of potatoes. Both the potatoes and the okra were good. It is a lot of money for fried potatoes and okra though!
They have their own BBQ sauce that is kept warm in a couple of crock pots on the condiment bar. They have hot and mild. Both are very sweet and syrupy with a hint of cinnamon. I did not care for either.
People probably really like this place for the massive amount of sides that come with the dinner meals. The BBQ is just some smoked meats and a poor representation of good Oklahoma BBQ.
As a BBQ restaurant it doesn’t rate an average. As just a place to eat, with some smoked meat items, I can give it an average.
The good news is I have two and a half pounds of fairly good potatoes in a to-go box in the refrigerator, to warm up tomorrow. The better news is this it’s the last time I will eat here!

Its been a while since I had eaten at JL’s … and they did not disappoint!
Food and service were great and the portions are unreal. You’d better be really hungry when you go there.
Oscar and the whole crew are incredible!

DISAPPOINTING! Used to come here all the time when we lived in Grove & Chouteau, so we talked about how great JLs was to our group of 23 (all of us from out of state).
1. Cost to quantity was depressing (less food, higher price)
2. Quality was comparable to a gut truck
2a. Fries & Okra were overcooked making the breading hard to eat if you didn’t wear your dentures. Glaze on ribs was too sweet. Brisket had no real flavor to it. Pulled pork was dry. Toast tasted old. The food was lukewarm AT BEST.
4. Majority of crew acted like they hated their job. Either they had a semi-bad attitude or they didn’t know what they were doing.
4a. Meat prep was slow getting good back to the front, we were told “you dont want the mac & cheese”.
5. Our guest of honor and his parents stood in line for 26 minutes (foyer to checkout).
6. We had reserved a room (and so did another party) and we were constantly asked if we had a reservation (by both the other party & the staff). Also, one employee asked us 3 different times, between 12:30-1-30, if we were almost done.
7. The floor had not been swept prior to our arrival (we were 30 minutes early and let them know we were there and then waited outside). There was crumbs, meat, & straw wrappers on the floor as well as a few crumbs we wiped off the main table.

I was so excited about the change from a pile on a plate to actual trays with the food separated. The food tasted so much better and looked a lot more appetizing. Excellent restaurant! A must stop for some great BBQ!

We ordered the combo plate and it was delicious! The ribs were outstanding, they gave a lot of little sausages which were good, but we would have preferred more ribs . Overall very good food and friendly service.
