A new mexican place in the books on the recommendation of family who have been coming here for decades. Their memories of coming here after fishing with dad or when mom was out of town- to fill up on the beans and rice, Enchiladas, tacos and burritos….I may have gotten here decades later, but they had the right call for fresh, quick, good mexican food with the old style atmosphere thay hasn’t changed much along with the welcoming and kind staff…. definitely on my Arizona rotation list for food when I am here visiting myb3rd home

Old school Mexican/American style restaurant.
➡️ We love the “retro” vibe and that it’s in an Old Pancake house building that uses the syrup containers for salsa.
➡️ Homemade Margaritas from scratch (although they could be a tiny bit little better, a bit on the bitter side for the house style).
➡️ Extensive menu, fair prices.
➡️ Service is the shining star of this place. Servers, buss staff, hosts, all great. This time we had Gina for our server and she was awesome as was the bus and host staff.
➡️ Even though the place needs a remodel (although that would take away a bit from the retro feel), it’s clean.

Step into Don Jose in Phoenix, where classic Mexican vibes have been thriving since 1966! This isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a legacy, and boy, do they deliver on every front.
From the moment you walk in, Matt and Allison make you feel like a VIP. Their energy and friendliness are contagious, and they run the show with style. Now, let’s talk queso—because this white cheese masterpiece deserves its own fan club. Thick, rich, and clinging to your chips like it knows it’s the star of the show. No runny business here, just pure cheesy bliss!
For the main event, I went with the #4 combo: a shredded beef taco and enchilada paired with rice and beans. The meat was tender, flavorful, and downright satisfying. Every bite felt like a celebration of what good Mexican food should be.
Shoutout to Phil, our server, who made sure our dining experience was nothing short of stellar. Quick, attentive, and full of charm—he’s the kind of guy who makes your meal that much better.
Don Jose isn’t just a meal; it’s a tradition. Whether you’re a first-timer or a regular, this is the kind of place that keeps you coming back for more. Five stars all the way!

Standard Mexican classics and south of the border comfort food done properly and quickly with a friendly and attentive staff. It’s unassuming and nondescript and you can sense the authenticity when you note that the decor has remained relatively unchanged for decades. No glossy paged menus here (thank God) and free from the glib and repetitive appeals to modernity by trend seeking millennials trying to create something cool and hip. Just damn good Mexican food at competitive prices. Needless to say, I highly recommend.

New to Don Jose Mexican food and enjoyed my first experience. Christian was my server and he was very prompt and courteous. He checked on me often and made sure I was good. I originally ordered a shot of Patron, but their tequilas come straight from Mexico so they didn’t have that. Allison showed me the tequilas they had and I ended up getting Insolente, an añejo tequila. It was very delicious. I topped it off with a Budweiser. For my meal, I had the red menudo with harina tortillas and it was top tier with all the fixens. I will return but next time with the family. Thank you Don Jose!

We were seated right away even though the place was busy and the server showed up fast with good chips and salsa. The food came out quick in big portions and everything from the huge California burrito to the chicken fajitas to the shrimp enchiladas tasted great. The table was a bit dirty and I got a bent fork but the food was so good that it was easy to overlook.

Great Mexican food but prices have definitely gone up since new owners have taken over. Chimi DJ style with rice and beans was $22 and cheese enchilada combo with rice and beans is $17
Food is definitely good, salsa is spicier, chimi is deep fried but also cooked enchilada style so it’s not the traditional crunch and sauce was really good. Chicken inside tasted a lot like rotisserie chicken but was still very good. Service was great, food came super quick!
Bill was $48 for the two lunch entrees and iced tea

I’ve driven past this place my whole life and finally decided to stop and try. Boy was this awesome … the chips and salsa were some of the best I’ve ever had. The tamales were great with the beans and rice, and the posole was scrummy too. Highly recommend!

We ate the smoked chicken burrito, bbq pork quesadilla, cheese crisp and the cheesecake fried chimi. The waitress was friendly and nice to us. But the building is outdated really bad and the kitchen was outdated and dirty. After eating our food on Tuesday 01/27/26 I went home and was throwing up and having severe digestive issues and ended up going to the ER. My husband Benjiman then went and started throwing up as well but he luckily had it more milder than me so he didn’t go to the ER. Thursday 01/29/26 2 days later my husband calls to get our money back for getting sick from their food. The manager on duty today 01/29/26 proceeded to cuss and be disrespectful to my husband Benjiman and then say that my husband can go there in person face to face if there is a problem…..so basically the manager guy ended up threatening my husband by saying that to him over the phone. It ended with the manager guy saying he can’t refund us our money because it was on our credit card and that we’re trying to con them for wanting a refund. My husband said we weren’t conning them for wanting our money back for food that got us severely sick.
Do NOT eat anything from here!
Beware!
Disrespectful Male Manager!
Food will make you sick!
